    Mikoshi-nyudo is my favorite youkai. One of the attractions of Mikoshi-nyudo is that it has obvious weaknesses. The phenomenon of becoming larger when looking up and becoming smaller when looking down is interesting as an irony of power. In modern novels, Mikoshi-nyudo is used as a metaphor for overestimation.

    • @vivanyatodd5036
      @vivanyatodd5036 3 роки тому +14

      That youkai can also symbolized that if you're looking up at peoples you thought are better (richer, prettier, smarter, more popular, etc) than you and want to be them, there would be no end because you will always find someone who's better at you, "there's anothe sky above the sky" and all that. But if you look down, you'll eventually reach the ground and can't go down further.

    I vaguely remember stories about giants in Europe. The female ones tended to be a nasty piece of work... They were only about 3m tall, but had a nasty habit of either hugging you to death, or self-inserting themselves into your household and eat everything... There's even a song about one, which is quite famous: Herr Mannelig.

  • @taekwongurl

    I actually heard about this one yōkai called “ Daidarabotchi “ its a yōkai that they said sometimes it poses as a mountain range when its sleeping their resemblances are bald headed priests, big rolling eyes, a long tongue, and pitch black skin-
    If you search up Daidarabotchi the folktale pictures are creepy-

    Hey Linfamy! The city near where I live, Yokkaichi, has a mascot that is an Onyudo. During the Yokkaichi festival there is a giant Onyudo puppeted by 6 hidden people that stretches to over 7 m, and I believe it's the tallest such puppet in Japan (ua-cam.com/video/SH2LCmEsv8c/v-deo.html). It was originally built in 1805 and was never rebuilt, just broken pieces have been replaced over time, and during the off season he usually chills on random street corners under the covered shopping arcade, so sometimes you turn the corner and are surprised he's there.
    There is an old tale about a giant rokurokubi here, but other evidence of the Yokkaichi festival imply in the Edo period it was a hundred demon parade and only the Onyudo stuck around.
    In addition the little yuruchara mascot of Yokkaichi is Konyudo-kun, the little baby of the Onyudo daddy. He's super cute.
