Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Although that sheds zero light on why Japanese folklore would think it contains the soul. Well, not unless those Japanese villagers were really into p-spot massages, anyway...
@@jasonblalock4429 I'm told (by a friend, I wouldn't know anything about it) that prostate massages can be pleasurable. That's why people use cucumbers.

My mother was born and raised in very rural pre-WWII Japan, in mountainous Tochigi prefecture near the small town of Ashio. As a child she and her many (13) siblings would play by the numerous mountain streams at the bottom of gorges. One thing her mother always told them was to not go swimming in the streams because the Kappa that inhabit the streams would come, and eat their butts right off. I guess that tale prevented any of the 13 siblings from ever drowning. I got to visit those streams as a child back in 1965. Before place, but it was basically a ghost town by then, the main industry of that area copper mining long since dead for decades.

Well that title is an interesting way to describe a kappa. In premodern Japan this kind of yokai would be especially common. Japan has a lot of rivers and streams, and most of the population that did not live on the coasts, lived near one of these rivers or streams. Meaning that the kappa were a threat to a lot of people. And the answer is Namazu/Oonamazu.

Linfamy: what would you do if a hand grabs you from the toilet? Me: depends....
As a modern Japanese, the kappa is a symbol of the clear stream and an opponent of pollution. When I go to a river in Japan, I often see signs that Kappa insists, "Don't throw garbage in the river."
The TMNT often get mistaken for kappa when in Japan and it makes for some fun times when they play into it. The fish that causes earthquakes is Onamazu. And fun fact, if you type it into google, your video on it shows.
Lol learning more about kappa folklore makes me appreciate Sarazanmai even more. Just subtle inserted folklore about kappas throughout it. XD it was hilarious. Had less sexual elements to it tho lol.
This has to be my favorite video so far 😂 The scare tactics totally reminds me of that scene from Asobi Asobase when you see the butt canon from Hanako’s butler 😂😂😂
My favorite episode of the 2012 TMNT series is A Tale of Yokai. The turtles are sent back to 1990's Japan before Master Splinter is mutated. You can really tell that the writers did their research since they mentioned kappa love cucumbers. They even mentioned the part about kappa stealing a person's soul through their (ahem) backside.😅😂
There is a Kappa in a game called Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town that is actually a woo-able bachelor. He can be married and your character can even have kids with him!
The origin of the Kappa is the Japanese giant salamander. A species that was once extremely common in japan, as ancient Japanese people sighted the Kappa, legends grew. But it all began with the Japanese giant salamander.
There are some old myths and rituals about kappa that are downright horrifying (and depressing), especially in the Tohoku region. Nevertheless, it's one of the most popular yokai out there. My kids used to watch a cartoon about a kappa (Hana Kappa) every weekday when we lived there. Whenever one of the schools I worked for had a Halloween party, there would be at least 2-3 kids in kappa costumes.
The legend of the kappa reaching up and taking your shirikodama reminds me of shit-stealing, which I believe you talked about in a video last year. There was a period when people sold shit as fertilizer, and took it from toilets.
I first heard of kappa through the tigers curse book series. They were described as terrifying monkey like creatures that grab you out of the water and eat you. Only if your curiosity made you come to close to the water.
My best friend tells me about interesting things he reads or learns-frequently involving world folklore. He told me about the Japanese beliefs about the kappa demons in brief. A man tricked a kappa into bowing and spilling the head water; instead of asking for a selfish bonus reward, he asked the kappa to teach him something beneficial to all. The kappa taught the man bone setting-so the Japanese achieved bone setting at an earlier time than the progression of other cultures. The anus thing came about from finding dead bodies by rivers or lakes-obviously after the bloating and rigor mortis stage-with distended anuses (from nitrogen leaving the bloodstream and expanding). So the ancient Japanese would say, “Oh, a kappa got that person.” That’s the best I can paraphrase what I remember my friend telling me. Ancient Aliens explained the kappa head water thing as coming from some sort of environment suit helmet. That the kappas are an aquatic alien species…
I did a quick search and I've found even neighbouring countries around Japan (Korea, China, Taiwan, etc) seem to find Kappa and other Japanese mythological creatures interesting.
5:30 I guess if your arms just come off, and you want your arm back so you can reattach it, then you might know a thing or two about putting arm bones back into place.
5:45 fun fact:some people have two anuses, the first is where its suposed to be, while the other is a bit higher and in the front roughly where the mouth is suposed to be. Its horrible cause those people start to say innapropriate things.

Wow, funny... I just started a new island in Animal Crossing New Leaf a couple weeks ago, and decided to play as a girl this time to see if anything was different. And one thing was different: Kapp'n is weird and creepy towards female villagers. Now I know why!
I suspected that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were kappa, but I did not know that kappa were this raunchy...I thought they were just something that Japanese parents made up to keep their children from playing around too close to the storm sewers.
I remember seeing an episode of Arthur where tell a Kappa there's a $5 bill on the ground to make the water fall out 😂. Very informative and funny video but just FYI it's pronounced like "kahp-pa" than "kahpah"
I heard a rumor where you could carve your name in a cucumber and the Kappa would remember you as a friend. Also, the bowing was a good approach because they were part vampire, and it’d weaken them due to water draining from the head.
