The 15 Inventions by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 772-786) are compositions for harpsichord, which are now also performed on piano.
Bach first put these Inventionen (‘inventions’) in the Klavierbüchlein für Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, in which Bach still referred to these pieces as Préludes. No manuscript of the Inventionen has been preserved by Bach himself. That was done by H.G.M. Darnköhler: he copied these pieces around the period from 1745 to 1755.
This is the first Invention, in C major, performed on piano.
