  • The City of New York's Department of Sanitation is the world’s largest sanitation department. DSNY removes over 10,500 tons of residential and commercial garbage and nearly 2,000 tons of recyclables from the city streets every day! With a whopping 59 garages assigned to service in each "borough" (i.e Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, etc) DSNY runs and maintains a massive fleet of over 2,100 trucks for collection, 360 salt spreaders and snow plows, and 400 street sweepers to meet the waste and snow clearing demands the city of over 8 million people has on the daily.
I filmed within close proximity to where I was staying in Manhattan, and as you can see there is a good mix of residential and commercial pickups. I was also lucky enough to film on recycling day, where buildings set out unlimited recyclables sorted into a dual stream of fibers (all paper/cardboard products) and containers (plastics, glass, metals, etc). In this video you will see 2 Mack LEU McNeilus Rear Loaders collecting the paper recycling stream, and 2 Mack LEU Heil Durapack 5000 rear loaders collecting trash.
Big thanks to each of the crews for being cool enough to let me follow along! Some crews I ran into were not too fond of me filming so I had to respect their request.
