Checking a project boat - Gemini 3000 Catamaran

- After having a Macgregor 26 sailboat for few years I want something more comfortable, but me eye is bigger than my wallet. Buying a catamaran is a dream but those are pretty expensive. Because I enjoy fixing things, I think buying a boat in bad condition and low price is the way to go. But, is this a project too big? will I loose money?
If a boat like this was available in my area, I too would have purchased it. Catamarans are so classy and fast boats. This cat can be rebuilt to be a truly safe, fast and blue water capable. And the beauty of it all is that you can work daily, in the mornings and evenings before/after work. Work on the boat all day Sauturday then sail away on Sundays, perfect!
Looks like a bargain to me ( i saw the price below ). Nothing too frightening, and I have seen the follow up vid. I hope you will continue to put up the progress of this project, I am sure you will get a lot of interest. Atb.
Thanks Dale. I agree. But I think that in general, if you are not thinking about sailing too far, the Gemini 3000 is a very cheap boat (benefit / price). Its very similar to a Gemini 2000 or older that is still old and can be as damaged and is four or five times more expensive. And also the maintenance should be cheaper. Fixing a ruder was a one or two days job (To good enough state). That would take a lot of effort and time in other boat maybe take it out of the water. The motor also is very easy to maintain.
wow that one is in tough shape. you are looking at 20 to 30 grand from just what I saw in the video to put it into good condition. That is if the engine and its systems are all perfect. You will be spending about 10k on just the electronics to bring them up to snuff. Heck of a project. If you were even considering it hope you had an extensive survey done.
I am not sure how much I spent but I think was far less than 5000 and a LOT of work (I havent work on the wood yet). But everything depends on whats your goal. Mine was having a replacement of my Macgregor 26s, not a cruiser. I have worked on a video explaining what I have done but havent finished yet. I hope I can have at least one chapter tomorrow.
How did you come up with those numbers?
I don't get why people buy boats to live on then do nothing to maintain them.
There are several reasons, but I think the main reason is that a lot of people dream about having a sailboat but they dont have enough information, money or the life changed in the process. That is a big problem in some areas where the people leave the boats anchored waiting to have money or something and after years and storms the boats get damage and sink or finish hitting other boats or houses. Please check my other videos. I fixed the boat and now Im preparing my second trip to Bahamas
how much ?
Around $10k
I've never seen one that cheap before. did you buy it? if not where is it located?
@@bretguidry6603 Its a project boat so it can be cheap or expensive depending on the money you spend after. I made a list of the things I needed to make it usable and an estimate of the cost of each one. Then I compare the total with the price of similar boats in average shape. I didnt use an inspector but tried to be pessimistic. I was super lucky with this boat. A lot of things were really cheaper to fix and cover others that I didnt put in my initial list. Something that I think was a really good decision was buying a sailboat with an outboard. Fixing that was really cheap. I thing Im going to make a video explaining a little more my experience.
cool thanks for the reply. I had a Macgregor as well , wife did not like the heel so next sailboat is a cat most likely a Gemini I currently own my 4th power cat a 20 ft twin vee
@@bretguidry6603 Cool, your wife will like the Gemini. No heeling and inside is like a little house.
