Since it seems that my record/vinyl oriented videos are the most popular and most watched videos on my channel, I thought a video explaining tips/tricks/advice for starting a record collection would be a perfect video for me to make. As mentioned in the video, these are things I, myself, do for my records and how I’ve grown my collection and things I’ve learned while collection. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE TO DO THESE THINGS NOR AGREE WITH ME.

Something that makes me all mad is that adults bash teens for buying records from this time. It's for some reason a really taboo thing to do. They buy records from 50's-90's, which is totally ok. And it's totally ok if a teen buys a Lana Del Rey or The 1975 record! It makes me upset because we're bringing something amazing back but it seems that we can only listen to the older stuff. Also thank you for all these tips (especially the holding the vinyl one because I sometimes tend to grab the whole thing.)!
PRAISE THIS COMMENT! I agree 100%, music/artists/bands are going to grow and change as generations change. People shouldn't be expected to only buy older/vintage records if they want to collect vinyl. That's like saying you only need to watch black and white movies if you want to watch movies...if that makes sense? i agree with you completely, THANK YOU for leaving this comment!
The reason why people look down on teen for buying contemporary records is the fact that most artists from the 90s onwards record and master their music digitally, while records from the 60s or 70s are mastered off of an analog source. Buying a record that has been mastered from a digital source is pretty much the same thing as buying a CD, but much more expensive. But if you just want the vinyl experience (having a beautiful record, with gorgoeus artwork and gatefolds and so on) then that is totally fine.
Most adult bashing teens got nothing to do with teens buying records at all. But about teens rather go for all-in set up Crosley player rather than save up a bit more and do a bit of online research to have a decent turntable. Just imagine 20 years from now, most of The 1975 or Troye records have become so awful it sit in $2 thrift store rather than collector's shelf because kids back in the day destroyed it with sub-par crosley player. Its already happening to many records from the 80s and 90s. It will be again with 2017's records
I think one of the big reasons people will bash the new stuff is because they don't have as much respect for it. My personal opinion is that you should collect the music that makes you the most happy and forget what everyone else says (at least disrespectful things they say as opinions can be good lol). We are kind of in a unique time right now were most "adults" grew up during the actual dawn of rock and roll so they grew up knowing, listening, and praising the ultimate Gods or rock music be it Elvis to Chuck Berry to Deep Purple to Led Zepplin an so on. I think a lot of them think that Mtv took music and commercialized it in too many way. Everything became about how much you can sell, watering things down to be more radio friendly, looking for the next hottest face and ass instead of just raw talent. That put a big dent into a lot of music after the late 80's into the early 90s. In many ways the "adults" you mention tend to see that same trend in music today while younger people typically don't know what they are comparing it to. For younger kids it's just our music for our generation. I think that is the dynamic of what is going on. I listen to a lot of modern day stuff in that my 90s-00's section is pretty large, but even with the stuff I really, really like...I don't respect it as much as legendary bands like Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, Hendrix, Wilson Picket, Sam Cooke, etc. Only difference is I don't bash people for what they like. That to me defeats the purpose behind the freedom and joy and music brings.
Paulina P. Some reasons why they get bashed is because they tend to look like posers if that's the right word. A lot of teens getting into records tend to only get whatever trash mainstream records Urban Outfitters is selling. They don't really truly get into it but rather just buy what ever popular mainstream artist or band is in the current trend because it's what everyone else is buying & listening to. Not just that but i mean mainstream music is trash and has been for about the last 10 years. But at least vinyl is making a comeback.
You are SO right about Halsey and The 1975! People should be able to have the albums they love on vinyl without being called basic!

As "one of those 50 year old's" I tend to just live and let live when it comes to what kids are buying & listening to. Remember just 10 - 15 years or so ago when Harry Potter books were all the rage? Just the fact that kids & teens were lining up around the block to buy & read a BOOK was an awesome leap forward in and of itself. OK - it aint Hemingway or Steinbeck; but those authors will come along. Just planting the reading bug in a kid at a young age was what mattered. Ditto for vinyl. The teens buying All Time Low and Fall Out Boy today who stay into music and vinyl will most likely be buying Zeppelin, Floyd and Sabbath as they get older and their taste grow and mature. Plus, some of us "real" vinyl collectors need to quite frankly get over ourselves; music didn't die when John Lennon got shot. I love Adele and have some All Time Low, Imagine Dragons, and every album by Black Veil Brides in my collection.
Agreed with all you said till the end lol. Though not ths worst if today 😘 Juat hope more do get into it all and Analog makes a come back. Then Bands will realize what it was then and start caring about production & music more again... one can dream...

Great tips!! Glad to see someone call out all those "elites" in the vinyl world. Nobody wants to be looked down upon because they didn't spend a million dollars on their record player / setup.
Kristine Summer at the end of the day it's your risk to keep playing those records on a crosley, I can speak this way because I had problems with mine, I didn't have the money at the time for a better so I saved up for a while and played my vinyl less (almost not at all)
Until I purchased an audio technica lp120 and I have not yet had any issue
Moat could early on either. Just limit playing and follow rules how one can til or if ya can get better. Don't listen to the snobs. Experience it all ya can & enjoy...
I started out with a Crosley and I had it for a year before I got my audio technica turntable. It never damaged any of my records, yeah it sounded bad but like it wasn’t terrible and I think as a beginner collector there’s no problem with having them at the beginning. I literally knew nothing when I started my record collection my mum just bought me a Crosley and I went to my local record store to get some alt-j and fall out boy records that I still play today. Don’t let anyone judge you for what you listen to or what you play your records on if you’re happy with it.

NotRetarded i mean records would probably be best. but, if she doesn’t have a turntable, i suggest merch, or posters, or really anything from the band. you can easily find their merch at hot topic, posters should be easy to find as well.

Is it cheaper to buy them in stores? I’ve only bought 2 and they were about $20 each but if there is a cheaper option o would love that because they are so much!!
@@nush13 You have to look around sometimes you can find it cheaper online or sometimes you can find them cheaper in store, but also check thrift stores

I started collecting vinyl about a month ago and as I dive deeper in the vinyl community I've been noticing that there's way too many judgemental snobs that will do EVERYTHING they can to make you feel miserable for having a suitcase record player...

I went to a record store two days in a row near me that was having a 50% all used vinyl sale and I got sooo much. I paid only $2.50 for most of them.

There is an AMAZING record store called POSITIVITY RECORDS! In PA, near NJ, not far from NY (20m train then bus to front) plan to spend the day. Tons to look through @best$! & Great Pizza/Cheesesteak place few stores down!
I have traveled around the country and done a lot of road trips to so-called great record stores and never found one as good as POSITIVITY RECORDS. Great knowledgeable people to help navigate your needs.
Some collectables strategically placed in rows & levels of Vinyls, Cd's & Dvds. Most movie ones are only $2. As is many sale boxes full worth searching. below. Hope the info can help some and they may enjoy the experience...

Hello sophie........I`m a buyer,collector,player,lover of vinyl from over the pond in England. I don`t follow modern bands like you and your friends,i stick with what I know and like,it`s a comfort zone thing. I`m not one of those pompous vinyl likers who probably look down on you youngsters with distain either.I thought it was a great video,it was good to hear the views and thoughts of someone young,who loves vinyl and wants to help others. You`re right about buying limited edition stuff etc...... I get caught out by that one,time after time !!! Here`s a few tips that might be of some use to you and your friends........the vast majority of my vinyl,has come from what we call here "carboot sales",the American equivalent would be flea markets,i think ??? You will probably have to do a lot of digging but it will save you lots of money in the end. The vinyl normally just needs a clean when you get home and sleeves might not be 100% immaculate but for me,it doen`t matter because it`s all about owning the record and the music. Don`t be afraid to take discs out of sleeves and hold them up to the light,to look for scratches and warps. As long as you treat them carefully etc.... no seller should mind.If you`re just starting out collecting,don`t feel pressurised in to buying a record because other collectors say it`s a must have,especially if you`ve never heard that bands music before. Listen to artists on youtube or Spotify etc.... then decide if you`d like to buy their records,it could save you a lot of money !!!Great video sophie,keep up the good work.

As someone that has been collecting records for years, these are really good tips. You mentioned that the same album might vary in price depending on where you buy it from because some stores overprice their stuff. This is very true but another reason why this happens is because the same album has different pressings that are done by different labels. Pressings of records vary in price depending on what source was used to press the record, if it was pressed on 180g or 200g heavyweight vinyl, if its a limited edition with bonus tracks or pressed on colour/splatter/split/clear/liquid/glow in the dark vinyl etc. These factors won't matter to someone that just has a casual interest in records but to a audiophile collector these are of huge importance.
Very true. There is a lot to learn but all so worth it when added up for an amazing listening experience!

Really great tips. I dig the Real Friend's albums. My punk/ska band Must Build Jacuzzi played with them in a basement right around when they released Everyone That Dragged You Here. One of my favorite bands!

Tip #3a - Pro-ject Debuts are also very good turntable at a reasonable price.
Tip #3b - Good speakers are also important. You'll hear the difference.
Tip #6b - Check out discogs for good priced records.
These are some great tips you've given that are not based on genre. Great video. You guys are the future of music listeners, jut as I was to my dad's generation. It's great to see sincerity.

If you can't buy a new record player just buy a good vintage one in a thrift or so. Just a fraction of the price of a new one (even if you have to replace the needle or get a amp and speakers as well) and way better sound than a crosley or whatever. I started with a 60's suitcase one when I was a kid, and it served me well, but the difference with a decent set up is huge. But like you said, we all gotta start somewhere :)

Great vid Sophie, some very important points. I buy what ever I like. I love repressings of old LPs because they've usually been remastered and they be on nice heavy vinyl and sound great. Your tips to me were spot on! Not that I'm a pro or anything, just made good sense.

My das has an amazing record player he bought when he was young and he showed me how to use it and he allowed me to use it as long I’m careful. His record player has amazing quality. I don’t have my own vinyls yet so I’m still listening to the old ones from my dad and mum but I really want to buy some of my favorite artists. As soon as I found a way to get more money than my pocket money I’m sure I’m gonna buy some. Even though I just have old vinyls now I love them. I grew up with a dad who lives for music so I know so much old music and I love it so much. The music and now also the vinyls are „connecting“ me and my dad

Great tips! Also I love your music taste, you listen to a lot of great artists! Also I really agree with tip #4. My favorite EP, The Callous Heart by Creeper was only pressed on vinyl in limited quantity (as were all their EPs) in 2015, and I skipped out on it and never saw one for sale again, and I would kill for a copy of it cus it’s such an incredible good Horror punk EP. thankfully there is hope, as recently they finally re released their 2014 debut EP on clear orange vinyl to the shock of many fans like me who thought it was never gonna happen.

I'm just starting my vinyl collection and this video helped me out so much! Especially the one with limited releases, my Favorite artist is Ariana Grande and she just re-released her older albums and released the New ones on color pressings for limited Time and at first i didn't want to buy them because i thought i Will buy them later but i bought some of the ones i liked the most and im happy because i'm pretty sure they'll be Gone soon.
Good tips.
One important tip that you missed that may help "fix" the skips on some of your records: Invest in a good record cleaning system. There are tons out there. I use a two, sometimes three, stage system. Stage one: I use an enzymatic cleaning solution with a wet record brush. the brush helps get the solution deep in to the grooves and the enzymes eat some of the deep dirt and pressing residue. Remove with a micro fiber cloth. Stage two: I use a super cleaning solution to help remove the last of the enzymatic record cleaner. Dry with a different microfiber cloth. Make sure there is no beading solution left behind. Stage three is a homemade record treatment made with Isopropyl rubbing alcohol, Kodak photo flow and a drop of Armor All. The armor all acts as a dry lubricant to reduce surface noise on older records. The home made solution is one I found online years ago. the original bottle I made ten years ago, is still in use.
Also, resources. You seem fortunate enough to have a good local record store, where you live. For those in the wild or if you are seeking something that you can't find at your local. Discogs.com is a good place to look. It works almost like e-bay for vinyl junkies. Another good source for new music is bandcamp.com. I will not give you grief for what you like. As a 51 year old who's been collecting records since he was nine, I do not want to come off like the douchebag Jack Black portrayed in High Fidelity. I know what it's like to be that geek seeking the Captain Beefheart record. Last thing I want to do is pass that brand of douchebaggery on to anyone. Follow your tastes.
One last thing, don't be afraid to set a maximum price. The price of a record is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it. For me, even the rarest record is not worth more than $50.00. Book values are set by the sales records of the author. That Bob Dylan album is worth $30,000.00 only because he managed to find some schlub with that kind of money to burn and instead spent it on that Dylan album. A lot of dealers learn the hard way that a customer like that is extremely rare and those kind of records will sit on their shelf for years and just occupy space.
Sorry for the rant. I liked your post. Good tips for beginners. I started my collection the same way, back in 1977.

@@user-wk2ut6oe1s - Maybe if you're 10 years old, but, not if you're serious about collecting. Your gear is just as impotant as your records, especially if you're buying brand new records.

Okay, so I live in Minnesota, and if you didn't know, there are like 15 record stores in Minneapolis alone. The other day I went to 8 of those stores in a day, spent almost $200 in one day, and got about 40 albums in solid condition (only five of those albums were 180g). I'd recommend not getting 180g reissues unless it's 20 years or younger because most albums (from the 1966ish to the late 80s) can be bought for less than $15.

Great video. I have been collecting for a year now and these tips are definitely ones I go by. Especially the part on missing out on limited edition. There's a Coheed and Cambria record I didn't buy years ago that was limited press. It's now like 300 bucks online. :/ lol I'm super glad someone made a video that's helpful and not someone being snobby about it. ~

I use Vibe! I got it on Amazon! There's really great cheap ones there. Mostly under $100
the lana del rey one is super true- i almost bought a $40 lana del rey record online, but then i bought it for about $24 at a record shop.

I got my audio technica a few years ago on sale for 75$ and it still works and sounds like it’s brand new
For people who like online shopping or are okay with purchasing used vinyl, I 10/10 recommend checking out Depop. I love buying vinyl on there because for the most part the records people sell are really fairly priced! The going price for most records, I've seen, is about $15-$25 shipped :)

Thank you for putting the Urban Outfitters Tip (#6) into this video. I might not agree to everything you said, but I noticed the Urban Outfitters pricing here in Germany too and I feel that everyone should be aware of this problem. I just bought The XX for 16€, in Urban Outfitters they seriously sell it for 40€. Everything is way overpriced and I wonder, if they think people are that stupid. It really changed my opinion on Urban Outfitters.
Would you mind describing your speaker set up? Like price, brand, quality, etc. I'm looking into investing in an Audio Technica but I want good speakers to pair it with.

I saw it when I went out for this years record store day and it first I was like should I actually spend the money? But when I first listened to it was so amazing and worth it to buy . i bought the trench 10" vinyl bundle for tøp just cuz i LOVE vinyls and i really want to start a collection, so with a bit of cash thrown at me by my mom i bought it and now im magically obsessed with vinyls and im starting a collection of all of my favorite bands, i dont wanna just but em in bulk and settle for anything, i want to get the vinyls i actually enjoy and show them off, i wanna collect multiples of all of the tøp vinyls that i possibly can and order them online so i can keep one slealed in the shipping box and put the other on my wall, which has already proven to be difficult and costly but its totally gonna be worth it

Pretty good video. The tips you're giving should help new collectors to start their collection. I am collecting since I am 13, which is 8 years ago now and since then my collection has grown to something between 300 and 400 I think. And my stepfather who got me into collecting vinyl has given me almost the same advice you did in your video. Except for the record player thing. I always tell my friends to get old record players from flea markets or so, because the new players won't have the same great sound and quality...I got my record player for 10 Euros at a local flea market and I could not be happier. It sounds amazing and even looks good (especially after I put some stickers on it :D) and I got one for a friend for 25 Euros which is just as amazing. There definitely are some good new ones but I would prefer buying old ones if they still look good...and one should always have one record that you will never listen to but to see if the player works. However, great video and I'm looking forward to watch your great collection grow. :)

ok tip #7, this is the way i do it, my inner sleeves are all horizontal to prevent dust from getting in, so i take the inner sleeve out to the record, to look at it or wathever, then I hold the record like you do with the fingers at the center and the thumb at the edge and then I take it out with just one hand to put it in the turntable with both hands, so that way I never touch the record, not even the edge of it

I’ve had issues with Urban Outfitters. The vinyls I’ve purchased from there come wrong or broken lmao, would definitely recommend staying away from there

I have a crosley and it's great I may only have 4 right now and 3 on the way from vynl but mayday parade a lesson in Romantics is pressed on and orange black splatter vinyl and it's beautiful

Some mighty fine tips. Lots of careful thought put into them. They also make sense and show that you are a caring "collector"/listener not a prospector looking for $$$. Glad this wasn't a "lecture" that sooooo many snobbish UA-cam record "collectors" do all the time.
Yes you don't have to have a super expensive player for records, they help if you maintain everything in an anal retentive way, but are not necessary. Another factor with record players it to maintain and clean the player. Keep it dust free. Cleaning the records properly with a soft fiber cloth helps, doing it before each play sounds a bit snobbish. It doesn't have to be that strict but often enough to keep them clean. If a record looks a bit dirty when being placed on the turntable then give it a quick little swipe with the cloth. Make sure the needle doesn't get dusty. Replace the needle after a few years, or as needed depending on how often you play your records.

I have a Crosley and it works pretty good I've heard complaints about it but it's mainly people who have purchased online, I bought mine at target I've had no problems and mine plays pretty loud. 💁🏼but I am looking for a new one
They ruin records over a long period of time, like 7 months or more. Audio Technica AT-LP60's are a great option! :)
