    I bought one for my new Marshall Origin 20 Combo. Even with the in-built attenuator on that amp where you can drop the wattage from 20 to 10 and then to apparently 1 Watt, even on the 1 Watt setting, cranking the gain and master volume to get full saturation meant it was still too loud for home use. Sticking this Powersoak in the output has been a game changer and it makes the 20 watt output much more useable too and able to get the tone from that setting. One observation that is worth highlighting is the Powersoak does rob some of treble from the tone. Easy enough for me to dial the treble back in via the Tilt and Presence controls on the Origin but it's worth mentioning.

      It’s amazing how loud a 1 watt amp can be! Funny, years ago us guitarists had to have at least a 100 Watt half stack and now it’s the complete opposite. I’ve ran some 4 watt VOX amps on stage and my sound guy would from time to time tell me that I was too loud. The PS1 is like magical with my JCM800, but I really didn’t like using it with my Friedman Runt 20. Weird…not sure why it didn’t get the same “magic” tone that my Marshall does. Enjoy that tone!

      I think it’s hilarious when people say the SV20 is too loud for bedroom playing even on 5 watt mode. Wanna act like it’s super fucking loud that’s a matter of opinion. Whats loud to you is probably not loud to me. I think the 5 watt is perfect for bedroom play and 20 is loud sure but not that loud especially when you take into consideration the back in the 60s guys like Hendrix ran 5 100 watt full stacks dimed them and stood in font of them and melted some faces.

    I got one for my 20W Friedman and my 100W Orange, and it's a game changer, especially since I only really play at home. I did a lot of research before getting it, wondering if I needed to get one of the more expensive ones, and the comparisons showed that the Bugera slightly darkens the sound a bit, but it can be easily brightened with eq to match the much more expensive ones. I haven't been disappointed yet.

      I used it PS1 last night on my Freidman Runt 20 (watt) combo amp for band practice and it worked awesome. With only pushing 20 watts into it the PS1 barely even got warm. Oh, that is a great point that apparently I did not cover! You basically will take a speaker cable from your amp head into the proper Ohm rating (4, 8 or 16) on the PS1. Then take another speaker cable out of the "speaker cable" on the PS1 to your speaker cabinet input OR the speaker itself if using a combo amp. As far as knowing what Ohm's you are running, it should have an Ohm rating on the speaker itself if you are not sure. I hope this helps!

    Adding that vent at the bottom is probably a really great idea. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my PS1. It's actually gotten so hot that it almost burned me from touching it, plus the little rubber pads they give you with the PS1 are starting to melt(can actually smell them melting) so I'm thinking of making the stand you made, then getting a PC fan and strapping that to the bottom side of the stand you made and figuring out a way to cool this thing. Its either that, or just have a fan blowing on it from somewhere else.. The idea of DIY'ing the solution is more appealing too so thanks for the idea!
    For the record, I got an orange pedal baby 100 going into it and then into a loadbox. The amp was clipping the loadbox I have(two notes torpedo captor x), so this was the solution I came up for it and it works, but holy hell the heat.. Even when on 16 ohms/70 watts this thing heats up massively. While writing this out, I had everything turned off and its still warm to the touch after about 10-15 mins of playing and shutting everything down for like.. another 15. The heat is probably the only downside to the PS1 from my experience.

      @LarrytheMusicGuy  2 роки тому

      Oh man, be careful Floyd! I've heard quite a few catching on fire. Not sure how much of those situations are user error/misuse, but can be dangerous when they get that hot. Mine got pretty hot one of the first times I used it with cranking the main output and I could not touch and hold onto it without burning myself. That bottom venting system has made all the difference, even without a fan. I'd like to think that if you add a computer fan that it should really make a big difference. Good luck with the DIY plan! Gui tar done!

    Thanks for doing q review of this. I have the same PS1 attenuator but sometimes still feel kind of afraid of plugging it in thinking it might damage something. I've had at least one time that I saw smoke coming off of the attenuator. I had shut everything off to make sure to save my amp and everything was OK. (One time was my fault due to mismatching impedences.) I plugged it into my Fender RI 68 Vibrolux today. It sounded amazing! I was able to keep the volume low and get a lot of breakup. Having an attenuator (especially on a Fender amp) is very useful.

      Glad to hear its back in your good guitar amp graces again! I really recommend creating something similar to what I made to create more airflow underneath. I did a test recently using the airflow piece versus not using it and it made HUGE difference in heat temperature. You would think that the manufacturer knows about the heat issues and would be able to resolve it with a heat sink or taller bottom feet to accommodate more airflow. Enjoy and thanks for watching!

      First off, I played in a band called Justin Case quite a few years ago...ironic! My 50 Watt Marshall can make the PS1 hot as well. It's why I created that wood base to allow more airflow from below and it made a huge difference. Something to consider. But yeah, I've been in some forums where the PS1 has actually caught on fire. Yikes!

      @@LarrytheMusicGuy @Justin Case Y'all need to consider that the unit is only rated for 100 Watts. Therefore, a 20 Watt amp should be fine. I use one on a 60 5150 2x12 but never really need to go louder than 4 on the Post Master. Without getting into a class on electrical, electronics, headroom and transients, this PS1 is realistically too small for a 50 or 60 watt amp unless you aren't cranking it too much. Good for 20-30 Watt no problem.
      Otherwise, these amps, 100 Watters and beyond are better served by a higher capacity attenuator like a Riviera, Suhr, OX, Weber, THD, etc.

      Yeah, my 20 Watt Friedman Runt doesn't make it warm at all. Also, it depends on just how much you are driving the overall gain and volume on your amp. The more you drive your amp, the more heat and energy that the PS1 has to dissipate. Thanks for watching!

    • @LarrytheMusicGuy
      @LarrytheMusicGuy  Рік тому

      Hey Jim, yeah I wish I would have recorded the wiring portion like you are suggesting. Oversight on my part. But, it's not too difficult to explain. You will need to purchase 2 shorter "SPEAKER CABLES" to connect to your amp and not "Instrument Cables" like you use on your guitars. You will basically come out of your amp HEAD (power section that should currently be connected to your speaker or speaker cabinet) and plug into the PS1's back "Bottom Row"...in the correct Ohm rating that your Amp and Speaker are rated for. This is very important to make sure is correct. My JCM800 has a selectable Ohm of 4 ohm, 8 ohm and 16 ohm dial on the Power Head section. That has to be selected to the correct Ohm rating for the correct SPEAKER Ohm in your cabinet. My single speaker combo amp has a 16 Ohm speaker in it. Thus, my amp needs to be selected to 16 ohm and I need to plug into the 16 ohm Amp input on the bottom row of the PS1. Then, you simply take a speaker cable from the PS1 Speaker output and connect to your speaker input on your cabinet. (in my case with my JCM 800 I had to connect directly to the speaker itself as it doesn't have a 1/4 inch input to plug into like a Marshall Stack Cabinet has.) Please let me know if this helps or if you have any other questions.

    • @LarrytheMusicGuy
      @LarrytheMusicGuy  Рік тому

      The PS1 only interrupts/inserts your amp speaker output to the speaker so both channels will operate same with or without the PS1. You'll just need to use the large dial knob on the PS1 to adjust the volume you want and then set each of the channel volumes on your amp accordingly. NOTE: Make sure to know what Ohm speaker your amp has and then use the appropriate 1/4inch input on the back of the PS1. Then you will take the PS1 Speaker Out and connect your speaker. I actually do have a VOX AC4 (4 watt combo) that sounds outstanding that I record with quite often, but it DOES NOT sound like a JCM800. Will this harm the amp ?

    • @LarrytheMusicGuy
      @LarrytheMusicGuy  2 роки тому +1

      It shouldn't damage an amplifier if connected properly. Just make sure you know what your amp and speaker impedances are and connect accordingly. If you have mismatching ohm impedances, then yes, you could damage your amp. My JCM 800 has a selectable ohm impedance output that must be matched to the same speaker ohm rating. If you have an amp with selectable ohm output you could potentially do damage to your power amp section if not matched correctly to the speaker ohm rating, even without a Power Soak in the equation. Guitarists have been using power soaks for years, so as long as it's used correctly it's a huge advantage to finding good tones at considerably less volumes. And if you do end up going with a power soak, keep in mind that the more you push your amp section, the more the Power Soak has to absorb all of that power, which for the PS1 creates heat. I've heard of these PS1's smoking or even worse, catch fire. This is why I built the wooden platform that allows more air flow to help keep the unit cooler than without it. That made a huge difference in how hot the unit gets.

      Oh no! I've heard about a couple experiences like yours, which is why I noted about the "Heat Warning". When I really push my amp outputs on my 50 Watt JCM 800 it does get almost too hot to touch, but after I created that additional air flow beneath it with the wood platform, it's runs considerably less hot. Sorry to hear that yours also had the optional "smoke effect" built into it!
