History of Rowena's Inn on the River

Rowena's Inn on the River is a 1920s-themed colonial inn located on a waterfront 160 acre estate in Harrison, BC. Betty Anne Pretty (Faulkner), the last remaining Pretty Family member from her generation and the original owner of Rowena's Inn, shares her story about what it was like growing up at Rowena's Inn on the River. Betty Anne speaks to the rich history of the Harrison Mills, BC region and takes viewers through a journey connecting old world with new. Beautiful antiques grace the inn and timeless whispers echo in the hallways.

This page brings back special memories for myself as a young boy begining at age 9. My late Father Carl Mclaughlin took care of the seasonal annuals at the residence Of Mr. and Mrs. Pretty located in Vancouver. One day while weeding the huge flower beds in the front of the estate size house Mr. Pretty came out to chat with my Father and I inviting my Father and Mother and myself to come visit his magniciant home and property located at Harrison Mills and for me to bring along my bathingsuit. The date and time was made and driving up the driveway and parking our car Mr. Pretty came out to greet us and I found him to be a very gracious host. Soon Mrs. Pretty came out with a huge pitcher of freshly made lemonade juice for everyone to enjoy. My main interest as a young boy was the huge pool. I remember splashing water on the vast cement decking around the pool and being scolded by my Mother for all the mess I was making to which Mr. Pretty replied, "let Donald enjoy himself its only water and soon the hot sun will dry it off." For a number of years we were invited to come visit in the summer. I am now 78 years old and still have wonderful memories and the huge pool all to myself. Thank you.

It's a truly beautiful place in a really beautiful location. My wife and I have stayed twice now, for 3 nights each time - in Charlie's Room. She's right - we picked up on the serenity of the place and it's fascinating history
