- Parts of movements "Kyrie" and "Dies irae" from Gyorgy Ligeti's "Requiem", with photos from Stanley Kubrick's "2001 - A Space Odyssey", and with some portraits of Kubrick, and of Ligeti.
This 1963 version is interpreted by: Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks; Sinfonie-Orchester des Hessischen Rundfunks Frankfurt. Dirigent: Michael Gielen.
OMG! This was my prom song! So many memories.
holy shit
Freaking amazing
Hahaha
I recently watched 2001 again - partly because of this music. I first saw it at the cinema when it first came out, aged 10 years old! My brother, who also saw it, was even younger. When it came around again the following year (there must have been a shortage of good films in those days) we asked to see it again. Mind blowing!
Oh man. All you kids who came here from the Godzilla trailer... glad to know you know the song, but you really need to watch it in the context of 2001.
Shut up old man
@@airraan1692 I prefer “sir”
I'm going to record a terrifying video telling my family I'm going to haunt them all and have it play with this at my funeral. They won't be sad if they're terrified.
I saw a concert with this piece, and it blew my mind. Oh, and my ears too. Well trained singers can do a lot of damage even without amp.
This is a frightening film.
Agreed.
The monolith is in fact a rotated black widescreen, the public all the time was watching the "black monolith" even with the proyector turned off in the theatre, Kubrick was a Genius. Today all computers, phones and tablets designs are black touch screens of the same aspect ratio... think about it with this music in background... "HAL open the door please!!!"
Not the same aspect ratio.
Yes, the aspect ratio of the 60's!! today may vary just a bit but still anamorphic lens and wide screen format for movies not that old 4:3 tv sets
TheDrLecter The closest aspect ratio to that that's standarized would be 2.33 (21:9 or 2560x1080) The monolith is 2.25 which is non standard. But I can see the resemblance.
at least credit Rob Ayer...
xamphor
Who cares Rob AGER? there are video interviews of Arthur C. Clarke explaining the original idea of Kubrick way years before AGER publications google it pal
The power of the human voices is creepier than any instrument
This song is beautiful but torments you like nothing else. This film had so many things going for it, including the music.
Haunting - like most I have grown up knowing 2001, the film and music... and this is the most haunting pieces of all... I absolutely love it!
Ligeti's incorporation of poly-rhythms contrives to produce one of the most crystalline and difficult pieces of music ever written. No piece of music ever summed up death better. No human being ever experienced anything so close to death whilst still being alive. Edward Heath attended the British premier, and asked the conductor if he had the right music in front of him. That was before inflation. And the three day week. And candles.
Kubrick will never leave my mind
Another teen here, and i found this soundtrack wonderful
no longer a teen, eh? how's life treating you?
That is so BEAUTIFUL
It is the darkest, most melancolic nad most cramped track I have ever heard but it is a peace of art. I can not listen it more than a few minutes because it makes me extremly nervous and cramped.
amazing!!!
Music is awesome!
Its a requiem right? I want this played at my funeral
Swarm of alto mosquitoes going into battle.
hahhahah
makes me want to go fire up the ole' home theater and watch it again
A perfect image of hell.
Still the best recording of the Requiem, by the way!
No existe lo bonito ni lo feo, puede que no la entiendas por poca costumbre. Imagina que un Requiem es una pieza musical para difuntos. Disfruta de las sonoridades poco convencionales que propone el compositor.
its too bad and a little sorrowful that all teens ignore soundtracks when watching movies, im a teen, i like techno and hard rock but im capable for soundtracks, actually thats what i listen to most anyway
Holy shit I just finished watching this movie, and it's really freaky.
Ligeti é só para os fortes.
"Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds".
i dont like the video but the song it gave me the chills!!!!
Great song, extremely creepy and eriee AF
Sun Ra that may cast light!!!
There are two types of people.
The people that came here because of the Godzilla trailer.
And those who came after seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey.
+5uP4h0Tf1y4 15P1tTh4tT I came here for other reason
+SAMUEL CRESPO never
3, People who are Ligeti fans
Why not both? >:)
I got here because I like creepy/scary/intense compositions
The picture of Kubrick at the end is scary. He looks like a psychopathic on the verge of getting his fix to kill again.
That sounds so antiquated like, turn of the century "psychology"
Dear god... This song scares the fuck out of me. At one point i could feel myself being pulled out of mychair...
"Kyrie" and "Dies irae" from Gyorgy Ligeti's "Requiem"
bad dreams are made of this....it's effective!
GREAT FOR THE KIDDIES ON HALOWEEN!
Why do people feel the need to point out their age when they listen to music? Just listen, don't call attention to yourself.
this was so wonderfully used in the new Godzilla trailer.
@1990Istvan does the mind rule the body or the body rule the mind? whats the score here boss?
Came cause the Godzilla trailer.
Download?
Great score. But for me it is still strange why it would be in Kubrick's 2001. It sounds like many ghostly voices and generally would be fitting for a horror movie like The Shining. 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the book Arthur C. Clarke wrote don't have horror elements or anything that would fit this music. The music sounds dystopian, but the story is more utopian in character.
Also, one point is that it represents the song of Sirens ... horrifying, captivating and beautiful all in one ... [shudders]
This always appears when the monolith is on screen, it's supposed to invoke the sense of awe and cosmic horror that the characters experience
Godzilla 2014
Crazy!brrr D: x)
Evidence Ligeti might have been alien.
its fucking crazy awesome :D
@gens12334 bowman is a total boss obviously!
Scariest music ever!
This is scary! But nevertheless it's wonderful masterpeace!
At about 3:41, I began levitating.... Thumbs up if you did, too.
A short while later, I was standing in the nude between a very old woman and an energetic old man with a home-made Prince Albert.
I think there are some similarities between this stuff and Indonesian Kecak music.
cannot be 1963 as the piece was created in 1965
@thecoloradanempire dont comment just listen ,,,, aaaah now im doing it !!1
Terrify music ever XD
Godzilla is so cool.
@4:45 the horrific sequel to "Threnody To The Victims Of Hiroshima"!
ゴンさんになる時の曲でいんじゃね?
Stop composing in a key? Um... :D
sounds like the witch theme in L4D lol
