Oh KAREN CARPENTER!! Where does one even start? The voice of an ANGEL!! Gone too soon, but forever in our hearts!! I just saw a t-shirt that said..."I don't need therapy, I just need to listen to Karen Carpenter!" I am getting one!!!😇🙏😇
You're right. When we're young we roll our eyes at what our parents like, but then we grow and have a GENUINE appreciation for ACTUAL talent, not something overly-produced in a studio. Talent is talent, regardless of when and where it comes from. Glad you liked this.
Thank U, I your Reaction was spot on. I've listened to That VOICE for past 50 years & it never gets old. Once I start listening, I must hear her songs To the end. To me, she was the greatest singer who ever lived! Please review her recording of "Eve" ?
"Superstar", "Rainy Days and Mondays", "Hurting Each Other", "Yesterday Once More", "Only Yesterday", "Top Of The World", "Close To You", "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "I Won't Last A Day Without You"
I'm so glad you find her voice "amazing." She lived with insecurity, and was stunned when John Lennon told her the same thing. Incredible how many people TODAY love her and her voice. It's great.
Karen Carpenter had a voice like honey. She was an amazing drummer. She didn’t want to sing and was uncomfortable with that, and then, in an article about the Carpenters, she was called chubby, even though she was tiny. That began a slow slide down the road of anorexia which, in the end, caused her death. She is the first singer I remember dying and it hurt me so very much. She is still missed by most of my generation. Thank you for bringing back some wonderful memories.
Not true about her not wanting to sing, she had been singing for a while. But she didn't want to come out front to sing, she wanted to stay behind her drums and sing.
That was interesting...thanks. I love many groups and singers from my era, namely the 60s and 70s, and yes,I recommend you listen to more Carpenters. Back in the time, we were heavy rockers, but always remarked on “that soothing voice” of Karen Carpenter, and waited in anticipation for her next record to hit the charts!
"One Take, Karen" ... Her death was a real tragedy, but was not wasted as she brought attention to eating disorders and those who suffer from them. We were blessed to have her at all and I am thankful that we have these songs and videos. Thank you for the reaction. Karen really was perfection.
The 1970s were the best decade of music! I was so lucky to have grown up then with the most diversity of GREAT talent and genre'!!Even our sons today know the music and how CLASSIC it is. Karen... among the Mt. Rushmore of all-time great female vocalists!
I do love your reactions. This song was written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols and was originally used in a TV commercial for a bank - Crocker Bank to be specific. Search UA-cam for 'Classic Commercial - "The Crocker Bank" - 1970' to see the original commercial sung by Paul Williams. I'm old enough to remember watching this commercial. Crocker Bank was acquired by Wells Fargo in 1986 and is now remembered for only one thing: this song. The commercial is where Richard Carpenter first heard it and decided to record it. It became one of the most popular wedding songs of the 1970s.
I can only say a few words about Karen Carpenter: Absolutely fantastic, sophisticated. One of the most emblematic vocalists in pop history was also a drummer - and very good. A drummer girl who is also the vocalist of the band? This is unusual even today. I love this woman. The singer of my life !!!!!
I grew up in the mid-late 70s playing Carpenters LPs on my portable record player almost constantly. Lots of memories here. Thanks for this one. When I was in high school in the 80s, this one was played at every wedding that ever occurred...ha.
good points, the reason the classic music sound so good was it was not digitized and you could hear the true sound of the instruments and great narural vocals.
the carpenters, karen and richard were the top u.s. hitmakers of the 1970's... over 12 top 10 all time classics! (not to mention their classic christmas album)... karen's voice then and now is considered one of if not THEE greatest female voice of love and romance songs ever... surely the most pure, rich, intimate, movingly beautiful voice ever.. she was also a world class drummer.. her brother richard did all the arranging and he did background vocals and played the piano and was world class at that as well... they did ALL of the background vocals and harmonies as well as they recorded and "dubbed" their voices with different pitch and octaves to blend together and make it sound like there was more then just the two....
I don't know if you've listened to it, but her final song "Now" was recorded when she was very ill and she died not too long afterwards.. Yet she still did it in one take and it is as beautiful as any song she has ever sung...
Oooooh that voice absolutely beautiful both beautiful ...yes has a wonderful feel to it ...makes me smile .. lovely Thanku loving this blast from the past ...great idea love an God bless x
Don't let that pretty dress fool you. Karen began as drummer rather than a singer and always regarded herself as a drummer that could sing, rather than the other way around. Karen and her brother Richard's recordings are timeless.
Another great reaction! Growing up my dad always played us The Carpenter's and said she had the greatest voice and I have to agree - effortlessly beautiful!! Impressive fact - she was also a very talented drummer! 💙😊
Wowwww yess we lisssend it day to day 😂❤😂❤❤❤ ohhh you make special videos for us !!!! You are amazing that you bring old old classic music 🙌❤👏👏👏 loveeeee
Love this! I grew up on the carpenters. I’m 37 now and still listen to them sometimes. Also love how you expand your tastes and review all types of music and can just appreciate the musicianship of people/bands whether you like that kind of music or not. Great video!
Oh my goodness, this is OLD school! I had forgotten how beautiful her voice is. I still remember the day she died. Sad situation. Their Christmas music is still the best! I also remember when Jim Croce died. You should listen to Time in a Bottle. Now that was good music as well. Yes, I am old! 😂
Hey hon, your so right in your reaction of this song. I remember all my cousins and brother played this song and others at their wedding . Funny, how you picked this out. The memories of the 70's. Such good music back then! Thank you for your opinion. Truly enjoyed. Please play more!
Hello. From Brazil. Wow what a surprise reaction to Carpenters. My heart group, since my teens. A unique voice to Caren. For me the best and sweetest of all time. One of the songs I love. Unfortunately if you were so young, because of complications with Anorexia. I watched a film about the life, success and anguish of these brothers who sang in a total harmony of voices and that marked my life. Thank you my dear for this reaction and for your analysis. Kisses. Too much light!
This song started out as a jingle for a Crocker bank commercial - Richard Carpenter saw that, called up the songwriter - Paul Williams - and asked if it was a whole song. Paul said it was and the rest is history! :)
The song was written by Paul Williams for a tv commerical (a savings and loan in California). Richard Carpenter heard it, called Paul and got permission to record it.
This Song Was Originally A Commercial Song Written Originally For A Bank Commercial In California, And Richard Carpenter Said He Would Like To Use It. It Was Written By A US Songwriter Named Paul Williams.
"White lace and promises" - it's a song about a newly married couple starting out life together - this was at a time when people still waited until marriage to live together.
Karen Carpenter had the most incredible contralto voice and her brother Richard composed and both were musical geniuses.Richard played piano and Karen was a great drummer. They had 15 top songs Paul McCartney/John Lennon loved her voice. Paul said she had the best voice ever. ❤❤
New subscriber here. Just ran across your channel, and thought I'd stick around. LOVE this Carpenters song. But then, I loved it when it first came out. Was in early years of high school, so it brings back some wonderful memories. There are so many fabulous Carpenter songs. One I'd love you to check out is called "Solitaire." They also did a wonderful cover of the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride." WONDERFUL reaction.
Great discovery. Keep on checking them out. This vid is of course just lip-synching to a studio recording. But the vids where they're singing and playing live are very good too. Richard: Writer / arranger / keyboard / BG vocals. Wrote some of their hits. Chose to do cover versions, including The Beatles, and scored hits that way too. In the case of this song, as other folks have noted, it was a TV jingle selling home mortgages to newlyweds. Richard saw its potential, got the rights to it, rearranged it, and there you are. Karen: Possibly the sweetest voice on Earth. In addition to her lead vocals, Richard multitracked his own voice and hers for the studio version BG vocals. When playing live, they did the best they could with BG vocals from the hired backup musicians. Karen was sometimes attacked by the media for being overweight, even though she really wasn't. Already insecure, that started to set off a chain reaction. When their manager took her off the drums and replaced her with Cubby O'Brien (from the 1950s Mousketeers), that made things worse. She couldn't hide behind the drum set any more, and she'd lost control of one of the things that mattered most to her. For those and other reasons, she went full-blown anorexia. At which point, people (including other Celebs) started picking on her for being too thin or too pale. Very sad. Half of the love songs she sang were negative in content, even though the arrangements sounded light and positive. Maybe life imitating art and vice versa.
Yes, white lace and promises, a kiss for luck and we're on our way. Definitely a great good luck song for a wedding. :) I really love this classics series Fil! Thanks for doing this.
Saw the Carpenter in 1972 .Karen and Richard were bother and sisters Richard was a brilliant Arranger ,and Songwriter (and a prick ) Karen was one of the best female pop singers of the 20th century (arguably one of best of all time ).She was also one of the finest Singer/Drummers of all time .When I saw her drum and sing -effortlessly back in 1972 .Other videos to watch on you tube .SuperStar ,Rainy Days and Mondays ,the Burt Bacharach Medley ,1972 -Australia in black and white is the close thing to what I saw (this blew me away more than the traditional hits when I saw it .Other videos here Solitaire -by Neil Sedaka ,Karen's version of Don't Cry for Me Argentina -the Ned Nickerson version .And 3 Duets ,with Ella Fitzgerald,John Denver ,and Andy Williams ,last is a chance to watch Karen drum and sing --Karen singing The Beatles Help and Karen Carpenter Kick Ass Drummer .Karen died 1 month short of her 33rd birthday from complications from Anorexia Nervosa
the history of this song is that Richard Carpenter the guy standing next to Karen in the video, heard the intro jingle in a TV commercial for a BANK in southern California. They are from Downey California, where I used to live for a few years, and Richard expanded upon it and made this song...
A little hint is one of the first few lines "White lace and promises". This refers to a white wedding gown and the promises are the wedding vows. This song refers to a couple heading out to a rich, new life after getting married.
Friends who've looked through my LPs used to flip me shit when they'd find a Carpenters album, but now they just say, "wow, haven't seen this in years." It reminds me of Darby Stanchfield's character in the movie, Stargirl, when she wistfully looks at the album sent to her son as a gift: "Oh man... The Cars."
This actually was a bank jingle about a couple starting out their life together as husband and wife. Here is the original commercial that Richard Carpenter, Karen's brother, heard one night on the TV and knew could be a hit for them. ua-cam.com/video/97X9huy7pHQ/v-deo.html
Yea your nearly right.....the song was written by a guy called Paul Williams for a TV ad for some house insurance or something. The as had a couple setting off on their journey. There was only 1 verse , there manager thought of them singing it so it became this....
Richard arranged this from a partial song that he saw in a TV commercial for a bank, featuring a young newlywed couple getting a loan for their first home.
Beautiful Karen considered herself a drummer first. Watch some of their other vids where she plays drums and pulls off the amazing lead singer role. She was one of a kind . And yes no technology needed for her.
SHOOT BRO THIS WAS SLOW DANCING IN MY YOUNGER DAYS MAN THIS IS THE 60'S 70'S I WAS STILL IN HIGHSCHOOL OMG SOFA - BACK SEAT MUSIC HA! GIRLS LOVED THIS SIBLINGS KAREN AND RICHARD YEP KAREN HAD A BEAUTIFUL VOICE SHE ALSO PLAYED DRUMS A VERY GOOD LOOKING LADY I HAD A CRUSH HE HE SHE PASSED AWAY QUITE YOUNG
Erzsi Magyarországról Nagyon kelemes hanja van így elsőre nagyon szép lassú szám megható Gratulálok hogy eljutok ijen zenékhez köszönöm a reakciódat mellé Fable Követőd Erzsi ❤❤👍👍
This is/was almost required at weddings here in the U.S. In fact it's something of a played out cliche for many. More and more it's being supplanted by Beautiful Thing by GAV. But yeah, Karen had one hella set of pipes for sure. Shame about her personal life getting so messed up.
Check out the Carpenters 1970's hit song CLOSE TO YOU. That was the song that really started things for them. Karen Carpenter has one of the greatest voices of all times. No technical tricks, no Auto-tune straight up talent. She died young but her music will forever live on. Find a UA-cam Video of the song CLOSE TO YOU that's at least 3:41 long.
"White lace and promises". sounds like 'just got married' to me. Try 'Goodbye to love' by The Carpenters or 'Rainy days and Mondays' then you can see her playing the drums and singing. Her brother Richard did the composing and arranging. Karen died from an eating disorder back in 1983
You are opening a veritable Pandora’s box of great music. Neil Young. Janis Joplin. Roberts Flack. Bob Dylan. Etta James. Nina Simone. And the list goes on.
I never appreciated "easy listening" music like the Carpenters, when I was younger. Now, in my late 30s, and as 2020 keeps on 2020-ing... I get the appeal.
One song by the Carpenters that most people never heard is "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft". It is freaking beautiful. It was made more mainstream in the mid 70's by a band named " Klaatu". Klaatu was the alien in the original "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Still unfamiliar to most people, though. That would be an obscure reaction for you. Be warned, it is an Epic 7 minutes long. Karen Carpenter starved herself to death. Anorexia Nervosa.
@@debramanrique So do I. That's why I figured I'd give him a choice if he wanted to react to it. I'm pretty sure no one has reacted to that song. Its obscure for sure. But its beautiful.
She was originally the band drummer and had Richard not insisted she get out front and sang she would have remained the drummer because she considered herself a drummer who sang.
Oh KAREN CARPENTER!! Where does one even start? The voice of an ANGEL!! Gone too soon, but forever in our hearts!! I just saw a t-shirt that said..."I don't need therapy, I just need to listen to Karen Carpenter!"
I am getting one!!!😇🙏😇
As we get older, we understand how life truly works. To have a pure singer like Karen, is a true blessing
I go back to the classics for the harmonies. Missing so much in mainstream music today. The arrangements and the harmonies....
You're right. When we're young we roll our eyes at what our parents like, but then we grow and have a GENUINE appreciation for ACTUAL talent, not something overly-produced in a studio. Talent is talent, regardless of when and where it comes from. Glad you liked this.
I saw them live. She played drums for the whole show and they sounded as good live as their studio productions.
I love watching someone's face light up when they really listen to Karen's voice for the first time. It's immediate.
Karen has always made this man cry , , She's an Angel ☝🙏🙌💕 Rest in Paradise Sweet 🎶 " Lady " 🎤🎶
If she sang the phonebook it would win a Grammy! - This has been played at a million weddings!
When she passed, so young, everyone mourned. Simply amazing to me.
AMEN!!! They had to be BRILLIANT ARTISTS. Spot On!!!
Karen Carpenter one of the most beautiful female voices of the 70s, RIP. You should check out "Rainy Days and Mondays" next.
I'd say she had one of the most beautiful voices ever, not just of the 70's.

That voice was only 20 years old at the time. She had such a natural angelic voice.
which I think many forget or never knew, she was only 20 years old at the time with THAT voice! Otherworldy incredible..
I'm so glad you find her voice "amazing." She lived with insecurity, and was stunned when John Lennon told her the same thing. Incredible how many people TODAY love her and her voice. It's great.

The exquisite Carpenters at their best.
Karen’s voice and Richard’s arrangements were unparalleled.
One of the most beautiful voices of all time...silenced way too soon 💔
RIP Karen Carpenter
Her voice is amazing, beautiful.

Goodbye to Love is possibly my favorite Carpenters' song. Please react to it when you can!

Wonderful reaction. I loved your comments and you seem like such a lovely man. Thank you!
In the '70s this song was played at most weddings.
What a great review, she was amazing the words are memorable it’s for the youth
1971 I graduated High School. This was our class song!

Imagine being a baby and having that voice singing lullabies to you .
Rapp is diabolical , and the Carpenters are Magnificent

I've listened to a lot of reactions to a lot of groups, and I'm amazed at how enthusiastic Hip Hop fans are about Karen Carpenter's voice. It's nice.
Another great reaction! Growing up my dad always played us The Carpenter's and said she had the greatest voice and I have to agree - effortlessly beautiful!! Impressive fact - she was also a very talented drummer! 💙😊
She was only 20 here, here voice is so mature already for her age.
this was THE wedding song of the early 1970's.....played at millions of weddings.
Wowwww yess we lisssend it day to day 😂❤😂❤❤❤ ohhh you make special videos for us !!!! You are amazing that you bring old old classic music 🙌❤👏👏👏 loveeeee
It's about a marriage (white lace and promises) and Karen's voice was heaven sent.
It is the quintessential wedding song!
such a beautiful voice and such a sad story of her life, her passing and why
"Bad Bad Leroy Brown" by Jim Croce is also a classic.
Loving the classics. Some great music came out of the 60,70
Yes. Your dad did play this song back in the day. Enduring
Yes its for Weddings, I sang this song for many weddings back in the day.
Yes, it was taken from a commercial, Richard rearranged it.(Karen voice is pure gold 💯👌👍
Hey hon, your so right in your reaction of this song. I remember all my cousins and brother played this song and others at their wedding . Funny, how you picked this out. The memories of the 70's. Such good music back then! Thank you for your opinion. Truly enjoyed. Please play more!
Спасибо за реакцию! Карен была вокальной богиней, как и Димаш. Я не хочу сказать, что она как Димаш, у совершенства тоже есть свои градации. :-)
Fabulous reaction and analysis !
Your right it was played at almost every wedding in the 70s

You may have heard it at a wedding when you were young - it was a very popular 1st dance for the bride & groom.
White lace and promises ... that's your context right there.

Here In The States, Alot Of Folks Use This Song As A Wedding Song!
the history of this song is that Richard Carpenter the guy standing next to Karen in the video, heard the intro jingle in a TV commercial for a BANK in southern California.

This song came from an ad for a bank. Richard saw it and liked it and arranged it.

It was the anthem of practically every wedding in the 1970s
Well, to be fair..as great as Karen sang, I don't recall hearing this song at any of my friends and family's wedding.
@@calmnrelaxed And how old are you?
@@michaelmaehle1433 old enough to be at weddings in the 70's...since we're asking questions, how many black wedding did you attend in the 70's?
One song by the Carpenters that most people never heard is "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft". It is freaking beautiful. It was made more mainstream in the mid 70's by a band named " Klaatu". Klaatu was the alien in the original "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Still unfamiliar to most people, though. That would be an obscure reaction for you. Be warned, it is an Epic 7 minutes long.
Karen Carpenter starved herself to death. Anorexia Nervosa.
Love Klaatu's version!!!!!!
@@debramanrique So do I. That's why I figured I'd give him a choice if he wanted to react to it. I'm pretty sure no one has reacted to that song. Its obscure for sure. But its beautiful.
Kaatu performed the original version released in 1976. the Carpenters version was released in 1977.
I love Calling Occupants....an amazing song
She was originally the band drummer and had Richard not insisted she get out front and sang she would have remained the drummer because she considered herself a drummer who sang.
i would love to hear Angelina Jordan do some of karen carpenters music. two beautiful voices
