MSI Ventus 2X OC RTX 3060 Ti Disassembly & Noise, Boost Clock, Overclock, and Power Limit Showcase

  • Edit: The thermal pads that I said make contact with the capacitors at around 4:50 actually make contact with the VRM mosfets (as they should).
No benchmarks in this video. Performance should be as expected of an RTX 3060 Ti so go watch other 3060 Ti benchmark videos!
In this video, we'll take a look at the physical card itself, the loudness of the fans, its boost clocks in games out of the box, its power limit flexibility, and its OCing potential. Since I don't have any other 3060 Tis in hand to compare this one to, you'll just have to use this video as a reference and make a decision for yourself to see if this card is the right one for you.
    Test System:
    - Case: Thermaltake J21 ATX Midtower
    - Case fans: 4x Asiahorse FS-9002 ARGB Fans
    - CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 at 4.25GHz 1.2v
    - CPU Cooler: Cryorig H5 Ultimate CPU cooler w/ included 140mm fan
    - RAM: 2x8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4 3000MHz CL15 (tuned to 3533MHz CL14)
    - Motherboard: Asrock X470 Taichi Ultimate
    - GPU: MSI Ventus 2X OC RTX 3060 Ti
    - PSU: EVGA 750 G3
    Timestamps:
    0:00 - Teardown/disassembly start
    8:30 - Noise/Sound demonstration
10:41 - Boost clock behavior during gaming
    11:30 - Power limit's effect on clockspeed
    13:56 - Overclocking
    14:34 - Overclocking + 80% power limit
    Misc info:
Cooler mounting hole dimensions: 67.5mm x 58.5mm x 67.5mm x 58.5mm from measuring with a ruler and eyeballing it from center of the screws

I own the same gpu at the moment.
I've had the Zotac TwinEdge before and the TwinEdge was more budget for sure.(small fans, smaller heatsink)
Now I found out there are two revisions of the MSI 3060 TI Ventus 2x.
First revision: Bigger Heat sink and pcb the same as the MSI 3070TI. Two 8-pin connectors. :D... (limited to 200W)
Second revision : Smaller heat sink. Hole in the back of the back plate/heat sink similiar to the FE.
Not sure if the hole in the back plate will make a big difference but would be nice to know how the 3070Ti cooler compares.

I was fortunate to buying this last year. I believe the thermal paste was the cause of being extremely hot over 98% usage when loading up Cyberpunk 2077 or Destiny 2. Unfortunately, this was the low entry card for the custom PC that was built during 2020. I had an AMD video card but the drivers were not very good. I will probably aim for an RTX 3070.

I'm not really experienced when it comes to GPU's but I do want to upgrade my 1660 Super to a RTX 3060 TI and there are a lot of options available but some of them are a bit over my budget. Some small things. The small heatsink on the vrm's connecting to the main heatsink straigth on one thermal pad , and the another thermal pad to the coils , nothing on the capacitors , for what ,that is high grade high temperature EL caps.....
another, when you decrase the power limit click out the temp and power limit locking , if your temp limit decrease with the power limit of course your boost clock going down , not boosting just until the target temp limit so like this you limiting the power and the temp headroom as well for the boost, when limiting the power target and livit the temp limit on highest what is "comfortable" get higher boost with limited power and lower effective temps , not too much the differnece but have a little and with some card bigger, just try out.

On my MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, which is only 10 months old, I never had a problem with noise until I moved it to my new case. In the old case, a Corsair 250D, it was mounted vertically. However, in the new case, the GPU was mounted in the more typical horizontal mount in a Fractal North case. Unfortunately, when the GPU fans reached high RPM, they started to make a rather irritating noise like minor bearing issues. To test if the angle of the card affected it, I tried tilting the computer, and sure enough, the fan noise went away. Thus, my solution was to buy a Fractal Flex 2 vertical GPU mount for the card. That fixed the noise problem.

I have the original version of this card. But 2 issues. 1. Idle watt usage of 45-50 watts Even when just using 1 monitor. And 2. Completely locked down bios. No oc and No fan curve tuning. I AM very confused if i got a defektive card. I got No stabilty issues or Any issues orther than the 2 metioned, card Even runs relatively cool. But power is expensive here and I hate that high watts usage in idle ..

That's unfortunate! You could try using these as replacements: www.gpufanreplacement.com/collections/msi-graphics-card-fan-replacements/products/msi-geforce-rtx-2070-super-gaming-x-fan-replacement
They're under a slightly different model number, but they're the same size, have the same current rating of 0.4A, and have the required connectors. Hopefully the wires aren't too long or too short.

Also I have had a ton of success flashing the MSI 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio bios to this card, as it has a slightly better cooler (designed for 3070, 240 W power limit) and 2 8-pin connectors (to go past stock 200w and 225w pci+1 8pin limits) to push up to 240-250w board power limit.

I know the original version of the x2 Ventus (not the V1) has 2-8 pin connectors so I'm guessing flashing the X Trio bios gives some extra OC headroom that can be fully utilized because of the higher wattage limit. Have you also tried undervolting your card to make it run quieter / cooler?

No improvements with Arctic MX-4 at least, but it is from a 2019 tube. That's interesting information! Unfortunately I think this card hits its thermal limit before any power limit so unless it gets some custom cooling, I don't think it's worth flashing another BIOS onto it
