Wow, people with opposing views in the 80's had intelligent debates without having to resort to insults!

This might have been the most spirited debate in this shows history. When I was a much younger man, I was on the side of the Union. I bought into that ideology 100%. I have since changed my mind and become much more of a free market capitalist. Now don’t misunderstand me. I’m a supporter of workers having a right to form a union. I think unions have, in our countries history, done a lot of good for workers. However, they’ve also done a lot of things that have hurt the very people that they represent.

Yup gotta look at the individuals. Recently got a nasty flyer from my fruit cannery employer who is on the union board, saying nasty things about another union member running, union infighting politics can get nasty!

Free market capitalism may not be perfect but it works and it's the best system ever known to man for centuries.

Why was this never shown in grade school? These are amazing overviews. Hearing the top arguments from each respective group and so many perspectives with direct, respectful responses is almost unheard of.

Spartanburg and South Carolina as a whole remains business friendly to this day... BMW, Michelin, Adidas and many more have operations here. Also, last I heard, Boeing was attempting to move some operations to Charleston from Washington state.

After completing high school I thought that I would enjoy a deserved vacation, but not my father who during my schooling started several companies, and he made me do manual work with the pick and shovel crew for one month, saying that if by then I was not as good or better than the employees, I would earn one more month of the same. After one month I had to start learning how to operate all the construction equipment with the same conditions. Finished this, I learned bricklaying followed by carpentry .... so on and on. Eventually I started supervising crews, and when an employee did not perform his mansions correctly, I had no problem showing him what to do.
When, after 6 years, I left our country, to go to another one for university, attaining top scores in Civil Engineering and Computer Science, I remained there directing many projects, and when a supervisor said that what I had instructed to be done was not possible, I climbed on the excavator and proceeded to execute what I had instructed. Having lost face, he resigned ..... I had no more problems after that with other employees, who had in fact cheered the outcome, and the Union that had backed the supervisor lost out.
Wherever I went, I worked to my maximum, considering that the health of the company is important for all employees, thus assuring their jobs, as long as the company remained active. The Unions only want "fees" from workers, without themselves having to work.

I would have much liked to have Friedman rebut to the point of people's right to assemble in a democratic society. I wish these sorts of debates could be reignited in the UA-cam era where time isn't a restriction

Rothbard said the right to assemble but only on private property. The idea of public/government property is confusing, we the taxpayers own the the property collectively? Murray N. Rothbard was Friedman on steroids lol

The union boss was lying and i think he knew it. People were leaving the union and had been for a while by the early 80's.

When we say accidents happen, Government says, we will ensure they don't, by eliminating the chances. They understand that all it takes is one accident to disable or kill somebody. When you hire too few employees that work longer hours to accomplish the same task, you are increasing the chances of accidents. A heart surgeon performing a surgery that lasts eight hours has higher chances to make a mistake. So, hours matter! #Margarin
