Building a wishing well from old doors

  • I have wanted to build a wishing well for some time. We used to have the wishing falls, a natural rock crevice with a pumped water flow, unfortunately this has failed and no longer runs, hopefully a wishing well will be less maintenance although I still aim to restore the wishing falls in the future.
As I had no funding for building the well I planed to use some old doors for as much of the construction as possible. My initial plan had been to dismantle the doors back into planks, but it soon became clear that they were too solid and I would have to treat them as flat boards. After adjusting my design I started cutting up the doors, this did not go well mainly due to the blade on my saw being blunt.
With a replacement blade and saw things worked much better, I soon got everything cut and had a solid base for my well. By the time I was working on the roof I was becoming quite limited for material, I had just enough to finish framing the roof but I did have to buy some sheets of ply wood. I finished the well off with a felt roof and a coat of brown paint, I was pleased with how it looked but now had the fun of transporting it. To move the well I split it into 3 sections, the two base base parts went in my car, and the roof went on top, after getting it to the water gardens I simply screwed it back together.
Since installing the well I have also added a sign and a bucket, as of writing this it has been in 1 week and so far made £1.
