CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Sparks fly as Joan Crawford and John Garfield heat up the screen in a forbidden romance set against the world of classical music in Jean Negulesco's HUMORESQUE (1946). Joan plays a wealthy dipsomaniac and patron of the arts who falls head over highballs for a young, struggling violinist played by a very hot John Garfield. Giving able support are Oscar Levant as Garfield's acerbic sidekick, Ruth Nelson as his possessive mother and Paul Cavanaugh as Crawford's debonair , wise and world weary husband. Crawford never looked more glamorous and Garfield never more magnetic. Filled with pithy, sophisticated dialogue, sumptuous visuals and shot against some of the greatest classical music ever recorded, HUMORESQUE is one of the greatest love stories of classic cinema.

Joan Crawford was such an underrated actress. She should've gotten an Oscar Nomination for this performance
I totally agree!
"I love you, so I don't care what I think about you." Now THAT is a good line.
So true.
Always worked for me!
"I love you, so I don't care what I think of you"
What a great line!
JUST finished watching this move and had to stop by for a review. Joan dragged my heart into that water with her! I just loved feeling like I was back in 1946 in an old fashion movie palace watching this movie surrounded by thick layers of unfiltered cigarette smoke! She walked into the ocean in HIGH HEALS and never wobbled!
In ankle strapped "Joan Crawford "F--k Me Later" pumps and Adrian gown. If ya gotta' go, that's the ONLY way to travel! Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
Dave Stern *Note to self-watch movie before reading comments that give the ending away... 😞
🌟🌟🌟 🤣 👍
A wonderful review of this classic film! I only recently saw Humoresque for the first time and just fell in love with it. Garfield and Miss Crawford are a fascinating combination. Now you must promise to review Joan's next film: Possessed (1947), another classic!
I fully intend to review "Posessed" at some point! Thanks for reminding me! Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
Great movie Love Joan Crawford
Me too! Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
Best cinematic suicide drowning scene ever..
Her and Geraldine page in "Interiors".
She was never more beautiful 😍 and Garfield was a great actor 👏
"Humoresque" is definitely Crawford at the top of her game. I think it's her best picture. Better than "Mildred Pierce", which was a great novel, but too cleaned up for the screen.
Yes, Crawford is feeling her oats in :Humoresque". She'd just own the Oscar and her confideence was never more boosted. Once again she was given the "star' treatment.
best death scene in crawford's career.
Absolutely. And in a gown Adrain. The only way to go!
Thanks for showing my favorite quote "I love you so I don't care what I think of you."
Miss Joan was so beautiful in this movies ,great, great movie
One of the last where she was truely beautiful. If the camera got any closer, you'd be up her nose.
Great to see you posting, Steve! Previous commentators have said it: this is an all time fave for Garfield and Crawford--but also for Oscar Levant's sardonic yet sad character, the glorious music emanating from the violin of a young Isaac Stern, and most of all, for one of director (and artist) Jean Negulesco's most beautiful framed b & w films, working w/ cinematographer Ernest Haller. Once Negulesco went to Fox and color he was never quite the same.
I always loved Negulseco's work and his auto-biography is terrific ; "the Things I Did and The Things I Think I Did". Highly recommended.
I think Joan could have won an Oscar for Humoresque had she not won for Mildred Pierce the year before.
And Sudden Feàr along with Possessed and A Woman's Face
One of Joan's best and Garfield is tops! It's not Humoresque it's Glamouresque!
Boy, you got that right!
one of my favorite movies ever, I just adore Joan
my favorite of her films!!! and ruth nelson as the mother is brilliant!!! the scene at the concert where the three woman are all in close up…amazing
Incredibly shot. I loved Jean Negulesco!
this is one of my all time fav crawford movies its a beautiful film ,and crawford is truly at her best and most powerful .she never quite look that beautiful again ,sadly the beginining of the hardness was to set in .just look at johnny guitar .but ya gotta love her
I agree. She won the Oscar while shooting "Humoresque", so that probably had alot to do with boosting her comfidence. Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
John Garfield...just a great...great actor!!
Shame he died so young though, only 39.
He was a stunner! Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
“Get my glassed Teddy”, must see Crawford
And Teddy is so cute and dumb...heaven!
Welcome back Steve and Johnny!
I watched this for the first time last night. Crawford is gorgeous in it and makes me blush when she messes with those glasses. Which brings up the comment made in the movie about her being nearsighted. What an understatement.
I also loved all of the music. The Carmen sequence was well done on several levels.
Overall, loved the film.
I love this one too. So romantic and she's amamzing to look at. The final trip to the beach in the Adrian gown with "Tristan and Isolde" playing as she walks into the ocean is pure Hollywood gold. Thanks for watching! Steve
There's a reason why there was so much chemistry between Crawford and Garfield- yep, he banged they daylights out of her offscreen!
My favorite scene - out of many in this film - is the extreme close-up shot of Crawford as she listens to Garfield in a concert. The rapturous, almost orgasmic, look on her face as she listens is unbelievable. Gorgeously shot, with Crawford looking impossibly beautiful, it's like watching an incredibly private moment. Which is probably why Joan Chandler as Gina ran out of the theater in tears!
I agree. I think this was the last time Crawford looked so beautiful. Her hairstyle was so soft and chic. She won her Oscar while filming "Humoresque" and she has a confident, radaint glow throughout. Thanks for watching aand have alovely. Safe New Year! Best; Steve
Thanks, @Jackie Jones! There is a link to my take on TORCH SONG in the "About Section" above, FEMALE ON THE BEACH is on the list!
"He was really raw, and Gawd, was he good looking"
Thank you, Emma!...Or do you mean Johnny Garfield?
All your reviews lead me to buy the Disc, this one no exception. You catch the essence of a movie and your enthusiasm is so wonderfully contagious. As Liza said in a song, "It is a party, just to be near you" Thanks Steve.
Edmund! Thank you SO much! Lovely compliment! I so apprecaite it!
Love Joan and your reviews definitely make me want to see these Crawford movies again.
HOORAY! As well yu shuld. especially at this time of year and you've got ALOT to choose from. Personally, I prefer Crawford from "Mildred Pierce "('45) on, but she did some lovely romantic films at MGM in the 30's and it's fascinating to watch her evolve. Enjoy and thanks so much for watching! Stay SAFE! Best; Steve
Joan Crawford, Loretta Young and Katharine Hepburn are my favourite actresses of all time! Thank you Mr Hayes for the reviews about their movies 🤩
Thank you for watching. I'm partail to all three!
The music video for “The Power of Goodbye” Madonna, was inspired by Humoresque. If you put the endings side by side, they’re almost identical. Very beautiful picture.
I'm not surprised. Madonna has always been influeneced by the movies ("Vogue"). The close-ups of Crawford are among her most beautiful. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Loved "but she can't see 'im for bug dust". I'll have to work that into a conversation some place before I go. Officially on my bucket list.
Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
love Crawford AND you
Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
The violin was actually played by Issac Stern.
I ADORE all your videos. Please PLEASE do TORCH SONG. Or FEMALE ON THE BEACH. Love Joan!
I've reviwed them both since I did this one. Go back and look at my ast reviwes. Hope you are well and SAFE!
Personally, I could never swallow John Garfield..........as a concert violinist. He was more the "The Postman Always Rings Twice" type. Have you seen Joan in "Rain"? Fabulous!
Shows what a good actor he was. In real life, he was the sensitive, high-brow intellectual type.
@@steveweinstein3222 Garfield was fantastic...people just dont get it!
The uncredited violinist was the then 27-year-old Isaac Stern. He would go on to a spectacular career as a concert violinist.
Thanks for another great movie review Steve. I've never heard of this one. Thanks for the heads up!
OMG! dathan are you in for a treat. Crawford got the full galmour teatment here with all the stops out. Even Adrian, her favorite costume designer from MGM! It's the best!
One of Oueens of Hollywood ❤
Thank you!...oh, you mean Joan...LOL!!
" i love u ..i dont care what i think about you" yesss love that Joan
Yup. Been down that road myself a few times...probably too many.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ heart :)
To be honest Humoresque to me pales in comparison to some of her other pics she did. I much prefer Mildred Pierce, Possessed and Autumn Leaves. 🍂 🍁 I think it’s musician plot. It makes the picture drag and I find it uninteresting. That being said I’d love to own that white dress of hers! Gorgeous!!!
Credit ADRIAN with that. By this time, she was riding high from her "Mildred Pierce" success and could demand that he be brought in to do her clothes. Later, when he left costume design for his clothing line, she found Sheila O'Brien and later Jean Louis. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Johnny looks good with glasses! Go j
I'll tell him you said so.
I just found this channel and I love it!!

Humoresque is A Star Is Born.
Make that Re-born. LOL!
What a treat to see a Steve Hayes review in my sub box--a great finish to Tony Night!
Love if you'd review Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf with Taylor&Burton!
I will! Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
I watched this Joan Crawford diddy a year ago and laughed hysterically at the ending. What I enjoy about Joan is she's a parody waiting to happen. I have a lot of the same info inside my head. I'm a walking film dictionary.
It started out really good and full of promise and turned into a Crawford melodrama. Never choose the married woman with a drinking problem over the nice girl who admires you.
OR....falling in love with an artist can drive you to drink. You will always come second to the work. Also, you know men, nice girls are often just nice girls. Too boring. LOL! Thanks for watching ! Steve
"Oh Johnny, not you too." Apparently that was Bette Davis's reaction after finding out Joan Crawford and John Garfield had an affair
Pure jealousy on Bette's part no doubt. Who wouldn't jump imto the sack with John Garfield? Joan was never one to miss an opportunity. Thanks so much for watching! Best; Steve
oh god i love this movie. going to have to watch it again
YUP1 Glamour to the max!
Oh my goodness, John Garfield, you scamp! Only Joan Crawford could let him get away with that. :) One of the special features on my copy of Mildred Pierce shows a ton of her movie trailers, many that you are reviewing, so I'll have to hop to it watch them!
AbsolutelY Summer's here an there's no better time for year from a Joan fest! LOL! Best Wishes; Steve
I'm not a Crawford fan, however, I just may watch this one the next time it is on TCM. As always, you're the best, Steve. I've watched your birthday video over and over again and still can't stop laughing hysterically every time you tell the "Candida" story.
LOL! One of thehardest nights I ever sat through in the theatre. I laughed so hard, and held it in so long, I thought I'd collapse! "Dag nab it!"
This was very cute! Well done!
Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
excellent as usual - put it on my facebook pg
Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
Lovely review of a compelling movie. But Steve, "somebody else" would play the violin for Garfield? You mean Isaac Stern one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century? LOL
Yup!
I think part of her appeal was precisely the fact that she wasn't always likable, that she had a selfish under-tone.
Yes, she was a very complex character and so she played complex characters quite well...wait..wha? LOL !Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
I like Oscar Levant's "Method" better than Garfield's...."What snarky remark is appropriate for this scene?"
Have to disagree with you saying that this was the last film where Joan looked good, or gorgeous. In both Possessed and Daisy Kenyon (Two films I'd love you to do) she still looked great and not much different then she does in this film. In my opinion it really wasn't until Flamingo Road and the The Damned Don't Cry where Joan's age started catching up to her. Although I thought she looked fine in both movies, she definitely started looking older.
She was never more beautifully photographed in her later period than in this film. Negulesco knew that she needed to feel glamourous and beautiful and was very careful to give her the maximum romantic treatment. She won the Oscar while filming it and never felt more confident and it shows.
@@iwantafennec9577 Very interesting and nicely put! Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I'll hit "like", because I agree, her confidence level was really high in this film and it does show. Her looks, confidence, acting all came together in this movie, although I still think she looked good in both films I mentioned. Peace....
As much as I love Barbara (I love them both in their own ways), and think she is the superior actress, this is a Joan role.
Joan is more elemental and impulsive, and Barbara is too wised up. Can you picture her SPOILER walking dramatically into water? Whenever Barbara plays blindly passionate or weak -- those are not her best roles.
They probably wanted to cast Stanwyck because she played the same role in Golden Boy.
Who says! LOl! Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
Watch for Robert Blake playing the John Garfield character as a little boy.
Keep an eye out. Two "bad Boys".
Sneaky Steve doesn't mention obnoxious Oscar Levant whose uninterrupted boring shtick almost- not quite- ruins this incredibly wonderful movie.
How about a review on 1946 movie Nobody Lives Forever? John Garfield
I'll make a kote of it. Thanks! Steve
Johnny was a baby here❤
Yup. He ain't anymore.
"I like to help out talent when I can." Oh Joan, who doesn't?! :)
Of course she does! After all, she's "pro-Boray" not "anti-Boray"! LOL!
Will you consider doing a review of Daisy Kenyon please. Thank you 😊
Absoluytely. One of my favorites. It's on my "To Do" list. Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ thank you, from a fellow Joan lover.
But of course! We Joan lovers have to stick together! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ p.s. another request: Gilda.
LOVE your channel!!!!!
Love that you like it! And visa versa! Thanks so much for watching! Happy New Year! Steve
Was Joanie ever really " broke"? I've heard so many varying stories about that. I don't know why she would have been.
Spending more than she made. Happens to actors and musicians all the time
Is Johnny your boyfriend?
I ain't tellin"!...No, just my good friend! Also a terrific actor. Thanks for watching! Please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
And also the star is the beautiful song.
This is so romantic. An alcoholic in love with a narcissist. Perfect.
Intrigued! Never saw this one....
Worth taking a gander!
We should be remembering Tina Turner in " Tommy".
Thanks for watching!
Hey wait a minute Steve. A supporting role?! What! Too funny your comment.
Well, what can I say...? Prpbably too much! LOL! Thanks for watching! Steve
_Excellent review!_
Thank you so much! Thanks for watching! have a glorious summer! Best Wishes; Steve
Like to see more reviews on Garfield movies?
I'll make a note of it! I like him stoo! Thanks so much and have a terrific, SAFE weekend! All My Best; Steve
Still waiting on reviews on John Garfield movies?
Sorry. Keep the home fires burning.
Steve, you're sure Stanwyck was supposed to do this movie first? I know she was the original choice for Mildred Pierce; this is news to me. I love Barbara and think she's a better actress than Crawford, but maybe she was a little too hard-edged for the part of Helen.
Not to say that she was a bad actress, but I have never understood the appeal of Joan Crawford. She was always trying to steal somebody's man when she was younger or destroy them as she got older. She has always left me feeling cold. Now I see I'm going to have to make another trek to the library to see what I'm missing.
"Why you! I think we're going to get along just fine!!!" LOL! Rather ambiguous title for this film; is there some significance to it?
I dunno. It was the original title of Fanny Hurt's short story and she was still quiye marketable becaise of "Back Street",. Thanks for wyching! Happy Holidays Steve
It's incredibly Barbara Stanwick 😊
Don't tell Joan that!
@STEVEHAYESTOQ
When I watch this 1946 film
All I see is Barbara
It was so clearly made for her 🤭
Garfield and Crawford made a hot couple they should have made another movie together
I still drink Pepsi, though! Hah!😊
Either one will kill you. so pick yer poison. LOL!
I love you ,so I dont care what I think of you." 😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂
Well, that's something anyway.
A movie like this, featuring so much classical music, extended play, would never be made today. Crawford's character irritated me to no end--so overly dramatic and self-centered. Love watching these old movies though.
I know. They are story/character driven films and watching them is like sitting down to a good meal. Thanks so much for watching . Don't forget to subscribe and please push the "LIKE" button. Stay well, watch old movies and stay SAFE! Best; Steve
I never claimed it was any of my business so why don't YOU!!! check yourself
Hey, Mr. Heys....that’s ISAAC STERN playing the violin for John Garfield. And Garfield’s character and family in this movie are IRISH, not Jewish. Do your homework next time. It’s easy these days. Turn on your computer.
You know it is really none of your business...check yourself.
Joan Crawford was horrid to look at and watch!
To each her own.
Joan C. Was NEVER gorgeous! Ugh!
I agree. The other girl Gina was far cuter. Wrong move.
You'd better look at her photos, espcially those taken by legendary phtographer Geroge Hurrell in the early '30's. She was breathtaking.
