I bought a sunjoe for $120 CAD 4 years ago and love it. I use it every year in Vancouver, BC as for some reason our grass here grows like crazy in spring and summer and ends up choking itself off. It is also a perfect preparation tool for overseeding/reseeding I really don't see why you wouldn't use it once a year in the spring before you overseed.
I love my Ryobi tools and came here for an honest review, I appreciate your input. My issue is that I just went to buy one and these are running $459 as of March 2023. I going to rethink purchasing Ryobi and see about something in the $150 range. Again, thanks for the content!
LCN, thanks for the review. Ryobi has had this as "coming soon" for almost a year, this was supposed to be my birthday(Nov) and Christmasgift from my wife, obviously that didn't happen. I have over 30 18v ryobi power tools and about 5 40v tools. I don't need anymore 18v batteries, I wish they sold it as bare tool only and offered a 40v version. Thanks again.
I have been waiting on this unit for about two years, I hope the two weeks is correct. I asked a Ryobi Rep at my local HD a few weeks ago and they had no ideal of what I was talking about.
They have been saying "coming soon" on this thing for a while. I won't hold my breath on the release date, but I will totally buy this the moment it is available.

Thanks for the first look. I’m looking forward to your review as i have been waiting for this for a long time. Your comments are in line with what ryobi told me two weeks ago that it was coming this spring. I really wish this was 40v though. I know Dad it yourself DIY was going to try to convert this to 40v so I’m hoping he gets this done. In any case thanks for all of the great lawn videos. I look forward to transforming my lawn hopefully over the next year. :)
The Ryobi 18v equipment works well. I've had an edger and most of their small tools for years and love them. I recently purchased one of their 40v multi-speed blowers and haven't fired up my old gas blower since. I highly recommend all their products to anyone that is going to use the equipment around their house.

I started using the 7 -0-20 last summer and my lawn took off and hasn't missed a beat thanks to you my lawn has dominated well over 100 houses right now in my neighborhood this winter....👍
I think I saw Johnny from blades of grass in the Ryobi demo. Also are we getting into houseplants now? Nice monstera 👍🏻I think it would be cool to have an episode that focuses on houseplants
my first thought is "how do those tines treat stolins". Secondly, "how small can this tool get?" it looks like it folds up a bit smaller than a mower, and being such an infrequent tool, storage would become important IMO.
Bought one over Christmas and had it shipped from the UK. Still in the box as Im in the transition zone and no use just yet but excited to give it a go being 99% of my tools are 18v and 40v Ryobi. I talked to a guy that has one here in the states trying to convert it into a 40v scarifier/dethatcher via a 3D print adapter. Not sure how that works but regardless will be fun to see how it holds up and not having to drag around a cord like on the SunJoe.
If I were to buy this, it would be using it to overseed my lawn, so, I would want it to be able to settle the seeds down into the base of the grass and 1/4 in into the dirt. Do you this this tool would be effective for that.
Awesome! All my tools are Ryobi from my hand tools, all my lawn care up to my electric riding mower. I love them and most were bought second hand returned products. As a plus they are all charged off of the solar panels on my shed so my cost of operation is $0.
I bought a green work one about 3 years ago. Works great. Wish I got the sun joe at the time. Really annoyed at dragging around a cord! Also annoying that it doesn't have a bag or scarifier! Guess I'm switching!
@@stephanie09.11 I do the same. It's just bag after bag when I do it every 3-4 years. Would be nice to have a bag on it, to collect, then now to clean up the rest. The battery unit doesn't come with a scarier and by the time I invest in a battery and charger, I might as well just get the Ryobi as I already have their tools for my house. Might work great for someone else, just not a great investment for me. I don't need a battery sitting around for 3-4 years that never gets used. I already have to deal with that being as the only EGO product I have is a snowblower and it drives me nuts only using the batteries in winter...lol

I am in the same boat. I have an absurd amount of Ryobi 18V tools, but a corded dethatcher is completely maintenance free and it isn't worth a couple hundred bucks to have a slightly more convenient experience for an hour a year.
0:36 Does early access mean you were given it free? as in promotional item. Was it ever $299 at Home Depot or did they just say that was going to be the price and then turned out over $400?
This thing is not $299. As I type this, it is now available at Home Depot for the low low price of $399 (some locations list it at $429). I was all in at $299. But I'm going to pass at that price. That's more than some of Ryobi's lawnmowers.
Here's a question about dethatchers. Everyone says don't dethatch a St Augustine lawn. And I can see why when it's in full growth. BUT, can dethatching be done when the grass is in the winter dormant stage? With all the heavy clippings that end up on the ground from summer mowing, would dormant season dethatching tear up the stolon's too much?
This looks good for the edge of the road I have little patches where the water washes the dirt like checker board patterns 3ft by a good 100ft i water with a can and rake and it's looking good its weird brand new street it's like I'm digging the grass out i would use that light blade a solid 20x or once or twice a week for a few weeks
I like Ryobi tools (drills etc) but I really wish Ego would come out with more stuff like this since they have bigger and better batteries. They need this and a reel mower!

Off subject a bit... but in tune with the 'rites of spring' theme. I just saw video of some guy, in a residential area, burn his Bermuda lawn. Claims he does it every year. That was the craziest thing I've ever seen!
No one ever says what the height adjustments are for this ryobi? No liquid dethatch in Ontario, that I know of. The sunjoe's are normally around $200 here with heights going from -.4inches to +.4inches. The ryobi is $550, No idea what heights and the crazy thing is, the batteries are only $99-$150 when sold separately. As a Canadian I feel gouged by this, but I own ryobi everything and am trying to find a reason to justify buying the ryobi over a sunjoe.
I’m also in Canada. I went with an electric dethatcher. Bought it during the winter and it was on discount. Since I use it twice a year max. I will deal with the cord
@@LL-mt2nz I ended up doing the same thing. I got a sunjoe on sale for $148 at home depot. The 100' cord was something like another $200... but I have been mowing at about an 1.5" and using the dethatching tines like once every week or 2 during the growing season this year, and I am very happy with how the lawn looks. I can't wait till spring to try the areator blades for over seeding. Not only is my lawn looking superior to all the neighbours I also think the regular "raking" is helping to level the bumps out.
@@Nathan-ho7vr I got the same deal on that unit. I have KBG and I mow it high. I found the scarifier blade too aggressive at even the highest setting. I overseed after using just the tines.
@@LL-mt2nz I have primarily KBG too. Short cut is more work, but I started cutting short mostly because I found the dethatcher worked better at 1.5" than at 3". Both heights looked great, greener and thicker than the average lawn, but short requires a lot more frequent cutting to look good.

Another great video 👍 I asked Ego over 3 years ago to get into this space making a quality battery 🔋 powered lawn de thatcher, nothing seems to be in the works. Do you have any contacts at Ego you can ask to inquire if they might finally create a lawn de thatcher like this Ryobi? I have invested a lot of money into Ego equipment already, this would be the next piece of equipment I could really use in my lineup.
What's the battery life on this thing? The thing I hate about the Greenworks dethatcher is fighting with the cord and it constantly coming unplugged from the unit.
Not too related, but saw Lowes now selling granular Atrazine. Straight Atrazine, nothing else. They are also selling myclobutanil. If I can get my lawn looking 80% as good I'll be a real happy camper.
Im not a battery guy, but this looks like it maybe a little interesting. I do have a professional unit, but battery power is also nice at times. I would assume it would be for a smaller yard. Its a little under powered I would think using 18 volt batteries. I would agree with your ending thoughts!
I LOVE my Ryobi lawn tools. I own a nice ride on mower (RM480E) and its basically a tesla with blades, I cant praise it enough. I also own a bunch of 18v stuff like a weed whacker, edger, various pruning saws and an electric sprayer for pre/weed killers theyre all great for the price. I wont be running a landscaping company with them but for my personal lawn upkeep theyre fantasttic.
I have a bunch of Ryobi tools so I'll take a look. They make more tool options than anyone else and I've never had one fail. The scarifier is great for Bermuda grass.
I've got Bermuda and read that you are not supposed to dethatch it. However, verticutting it is fine. Can you verticut with that reel that has the blades? Home Depot page lists this part as the "Aerator"

Do the dethatcher blades destroy the runners found with growing Bermuda grass?
Probably
A Bermuda lawn needs to be dethatched in the early spring before the runners start growing.

You had me all excited to buy a battery aerator then the crushing news came in that it wasn’t 🤪.
😂
That hat was giving me Brett Michaels vibes bro! #RockOfLove
Use the battery on the backpack sprayer, you should do a video
I legit was like "why is farmtruck on the episode!?"
🤣🤣🤣
Now two weeks later. Anyone finding this unit available in the US?
Not yet. I check every day! Spring is coming, I need to get my grass going lol. I know as soon as I buy the SunJoe one, Ryobi will release theirs…
I know you have a couple different grasses. Would you recommend this for st Augustine?
No not at all. All others are ok but not St Aug.
What's the battery life on this thing? The thing I hate about the Greenworks dethatcher is fighting with the cord and it constantly coming unplugged from the unit.
Started watching and thought it was Farmtruck taking. Then noticed you were wearing a farm truck hat!
😂😂😂
Not too related, but saw Lowes now selling granular Atrazine. Straight Atrazine, nothing else. They are also selling myclobutanil. If I can get my lawn looking 80% as good I'll be a real happy camper.
Does it use both 18v batteries at the same time, giving you a total of 36 volts?
@@th3m1ke its awesome it works for some people. Personally Im not ready for it. Congrats on your purchases
@@MyGreenLawn2019 Oh I didnt get the dethatcher yet, its not released in the US yet anyway and my SunJoe is working well.
@@th3m1ke is the Sunjoe the electric one?
@@MyGreenLawn2019 Yup, plug in version.
I believe it retails for $400 now. Demand must have been higher than they thought?
Ryobi going hard to get into the lawn game
Literally been waiting on this thing about a year
I'm hearing that alot
Hahaha, Cowboy 🤠 💪🏼💖💚
Now thats a Bahia grass call out!
