Try running the Ryobi with the bag catcher off. Use a bungie cord to keep the discharge cover in the up position. This will keep it from bogging down. Then use the rotary or reel mower with the bagger/catcher to pick up the clippings.
Mate! What an awesome review on these products. I’ve been researching for weeks, back and forth. Thank you for putting this together it has made my mind up. Greatly appreciate your efforts. I’ll be subscribing now.
@@redboylfc1 Our Kikuyu looked like it hadn't been scarified in 40+ years, so mowing it was always difficult. The Draper did a really good job on ripping out mountains and mountains of thatch. (Our neighbour asked us to go over his lawn too!) The lawn is so much easier to mow now and when we water it, the moisture goes into the soil better. The build quality is a bit crappy (my wife thinks it looks like a toy) and it definitely is a pain having to be careful with the power cable, but overall, I'm extremely happy with this little beast of a machine! It's even light enough to hang on a hook in our garage.
Great video. Bunnings are know selling a dethatcher attachment for the ryobi. I will be buying the ryobi and the dethatcher next week. Looking to get rid of some of my thatch on my Empire Zoysia. My lawn is struggling already, over here in Perth!
I used the ryobi on buffalo found this review very accurate, I have about 90sq and had to wait to charge the battery before I finished but I haven’t done my lawn in 5 years so it was working pretty hard
Watching you show your entire cabinet of lawn care products, while I just run the lawnmower maybe once or twice a month when it starts looking like a jungle 😂
Definitely seems like the draper is a better unit. Bogging down is likely because ryobi skimped on the motor and put a cheapie in there, batteries can dump out a surprising amount of current, the metabo 10ahs are rated to do 1kw each.
How are you finding this 2 years down? Im tossing up the ryobi or draper. The warranty and ability to return to bunnings easily is tempting . Id use makita batteries with an adapter
Would this unit be suited for buffalo lawns/runner lawns. As this is a scarifier that will cut down on the runners. Or would a dethatcher with twines be more suited for lawns like buffalo
Good video, my zoysia has some serious thatch problems. I will be getting one of these with some makita battery adaptors. Can you please tell me what you did for the edges, as in how to remove the thatch from the edges? Thanks
Regarding a previous statement, this Draper product is a good value for the price. It includes two attachments, an "aerator" and a "scarifier," which some may argue should have been labeled a "scarifier" and a "groomer." Recently, I used the lighter attachment during the late growing season, and it performed exceptionally well. It lifted the Kikuyu grass blades for a clean cut, without causing much damage, and the grass quickly recovered.
You had me OUT at 240v and leads 🤮 100% going the Ryobi before spring Way better leaving the mini catcher off the ryobi, strapping the back flap open so it doesn't get clogged and just pick it up with the rotary or rake after
Yeah leads definitely aren’t the greatest. I used a snipper with a lead for ages. Got over it quick 👌. Your bang on about the catcher. Worked out better not using it.
Battery< you pay for the power and the batteries will fail completely eventually so yo buy new batteries so check the price of battery replacement. I believe fuel/gas is the cheapest convenient option
The Ryobi will never compete with a mains powered. But it will do 80% of the job and is so much easier to use. If I had to buy one it would be the Ryobi 10/10
As a kid, we had a corded lawnmower. Now, in 2024, I'll spend more money to avoid the cord. Just bought the Ryobi one. Pricey, but I plan on renting it out on the local ads when I'm done with it.
Isn't a lead a short piece of wire that connects two things together. For example, a resistor has a lead. Therefore, would you be using an extension lead to hook up your electrified equipment to the mains?
Looked into electric crap and the best option was Ryobi, ended buying a petrol predator, look into that instead. Cost $50 more then ryobi with 2 batteries 250 m2 stuff electric lol
Mate, just some feedback re you’re editing. Whatever app, program you’re using, please for your viewers sake, equalise volume for your music and video footage. Ears got blasted whenever your music intervals came in. Took my attention away from the video and contemplated watching a different channels comparison video. Super easy to do. Informative video none the less. Just some constructive feedback. Keep it up.
Hey Steve. I really appreciate it mate. I’m hoping I’ve improved since this video. I’ve tried to equalise the audio in most of my newer videos over the last year or so and changed program as I’ve gone to desktop as this video was edited on my phone. Again thanks for the constructive criticism. Have a great weekend
Hahaha. Aerator. That’s not an aerator. That’s a power rake will pull out the dead grass (thatch). Is not as aggressive as the vertical-cutter for scarifying. Add - and run straight across that concrete cover with the blades 🤦🏼♂️. Drop it to lowest and up it to get best out of that (but keep it on the lawn, not over concrete cover). Lead isn’t an issue if work away from it
fugly house bro
Cheers legend. I built it for you👍
@@AddictedtoTools Bwahaha. Good one! Love your house man. Great video too.
Wow, someone's on their high horse
At least he has one..
Someone needs a hug
I admire your dedication to your lawn, me, I'm happy if it's green and short. 😂😅

No worries mate. Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad it helped
I ordered a Draper, based partly on this video. Much appreciated. Keen to see how it goes on my Kikuyu.
ive got kike too please let us know how you go with the draper

@@peterg5440 thankyou so much for the reply. I feel safe buying one.
I don’t mind a lead for a scarifier - it’s not something I use every week
Great video.

Great video thanks mate.👌🏼
That was a thorough comparison and fun to watch. Cheers from NZ.
I think the “aerator” you showed for the draper is actually the rake attachment.
Do you think these machines will be okay to do scarifying on Buffalo grass?……..
I used the ryobi on buffalo found this review very accurate, I have about 90sq and had to wait to charge the battery before I finished but I haven’t done my lawn in 5 years so it was working pretty hard
Yes
Just bought draper on sale now from total tools for $249 thx to your review 😅😊
Hi John, pls post again after use, as I am thinking of the same. Cheers!
Can’t wait to watch this 😎👌🏼
Cheers daniel 🍻👍
Watching you show your entire cabinet of lawn care products, while I just run the lawnmower maybe once or twice a month when it starts looking like a jungle 😂
😂 it can turn into a full time job almost. I almost wish I didn’t get into it. 👍
Could you let me know what type of lawn you have? It looks so nice! And I have buffalo and been told to be really careful with the scarifying
Hey mate this was empire zoysia
Lawn is looking good as always. Great video.
Cheers mate 👍
What a review. Outstanding job. Thank you. I have subscribed
Thanks Neil
Does Draper ship to the states ? is there another brand that is comparable to the Draper that would do a good job? Like Sun Joe, Ryobi , etc ?
Definitely seems like the draper is a better unit.
Bogging down is likely because ryobi skimped on the motor and put a cheapie in there, batteries can dump out a surprising amount of current, the metabo 10ahs are rated to do 1kw each.
Yeah it’s crazy how much they pump out these days. Draper definitely did a good little cheap unit. 👍
What is you’re manual hand aerator
Definitely need to do this to my lawn.
I would look into it more and maybe ask a lawn expert. I have a feeling you shouldn’t dethatch buffalo as much as other grass. I could be wrong though
@@AddictedtoTools You are correct. I don't dethatch or scarify buffalo at all.
Where did you get the pronged lawn aerator from? My Bunnings one snapped ages ago
Commenting incase anyone provides an answer :D
Good video, my zoysia has some serious thatch problems. I will be getting one of these with some makita battery adaptors.

Good video Man
What type of grass do you have , couch or kikyu ?

Good video man, wondering what season is that and is it sir Walter buffalo turf ?
Ever thought of painting in those ugly access covers a light green to make them less of an eyesore? I just overspray them with colour guard plus.
Mint lawn. What type of grass do you have?
Empire zoysia. Was - great lawn to work with. Wondering if I go that or tiftuf this next time around.
The Ryobi now has a 36v battery and is very efficient
Why do you think the Draper is better than Ryobi? Thanks.
What time of year did you do this? Guessing you are QLD?
Could you use Milwaukee batteries with an battery adapter on the Ryobi scarifier?
Yeah you definitely could. 👍
Thinking of doing this with my makita batteries
The ryobi is over $400 here in the U.S., I'll wait until they drop the ridiculous price
What variety of grass do you have here ?
Is that St. Augustine grass?
Great video. Now all I need is a nice lawn like yours. 🤗
what kind of lawn vacuum is that?
Thanks for the review very informative Cheers
No worries mate👍
Great video, learnt a bit. How often do you do this to a lawn?
Usually once a year. But I would like to do it maybe 2-3 times. Just a light dethatching though. Not as much as I did here
Hey mate, do you reckon the Ryobi would handle a buffalo lawn?
I'm also skeptical with my Kik...I think I'll just go draper because it's used rarely which I can handle the cord.
Can this be used on buffalo lawns?
very good presentation, thank you....🙂🙃🤕👍
You should start curing the lawn a different direction ever other cut to prevent that pattern and compaction
Did you personally buy all of those machines? Why not get one machine that does everything?
I’m not sure what machine you’re talking about sorry
most people leave the catcher off the draper as its too small, and do collection at the end, with a bigger bushel mower
What do you do around the sprinkler heads?
I don’t have sprinkler heads.
That “airator” is a rake for deep raking ot the lawn.
Dethatcher
You had me OUT at 240v and leads 🤮 100% going the Ryobi before spring
Way better leaving the mini catcher off the ryobi, strapping the back flap open so it doesn't get clogged and just pick it up with the rotary or rake after

I hate how yellow it looks after you dethatch your lawn. Did mine last Sunday. The wait until it recovers is heart breaking
The Ryobi will never compete with a mains powered. But it will do 80% of the job and is so much easier to use.

What boots are you wearing?
Oliver short ankle composite boots
These machines all work about the same, They do a good job but it would be nice if they are wider than 13" , Why not make them 18" or 16 "?
The draper "aerator"cartridge is actually a grooming cartridge
Isn't a lead a short piece of wire that connects two things together. For example, a resistor has a lead. Therefore, would you be using an extension lead to hook up your electrified equipment to the mains?
I just had a dream of me claiming a perfect dethatcher from my nabors trash 😆
Ill get the Ryobi
The greenworks one works pretty well .
There is no greenworks
I really would of just took the bags of them at the start and then run over with the mower to pick all the scalps up
the attachment isnt an aerator its a groomer.
Looked into electric crap and the best option was Ryobi, ended buying a petrol predator, look into that instead. Cost $50 more then ryobi with 2 batteries
250 m2 stuff electric lol
That’s definitely the way to go. The batteries are a pain for larger areas.
Just needs a new paint job, something lighter perhaps..
That's not an aerator, that's a thatcher.
That’s correct. Did I call it an aerator? There is an aerator attachment
240v for a small power tool would be insanity in the US
lots n lots n lots of chemicals...yum
