On April 10, 2023, officers pulled over a female driver who had violated her probation rules in Portage, WI. As the interaction unfolded, her behavior escalated. She refused to leave her vehicle when asked and intentionally reversed, ramming into the police car. Following a pursuit covering several miles with multiple agencies, she eventually pulled over and surrendered herself.

Either because they’re repressive regimes where most prisoners die in jail (let’s not…), or because they are TREATED for their underlying issues- whether it be trauma, BPD, addiction, etc. It’s SO much cheaper in the long run, but people have a hard time seeing the long term benefits. The other thing that reduces crime rates is proper parental leave for babies and daycare for toddlers. That’s when emotional regulation is learned. I understand that many jurisdictions have a large caseload but a big reason they have so many cases is that the people they drop charges on reoffend, so they have more cases. It's a bad cycle. My country (Austria) doesn't have much crime but it's crazy to see that European prosecutors typically pursue cases harder than in the U.S. If the U.S. wants crime rates as low as Europe, they're going in the opposite direction. For such a rich country, it's disappointing that the U.S. justice system operates like this.

This is the pendulum swinging to the other extreme. We have way too many people incarcerated-more than any other democratic country (per capita). We are also in need of police reform after decades of stop and frisk and “war on drug” policies creating departments that look and act like soldiers against citizens. Like all reform in this country, we go to the extreme in over correcting before finding some balance.
