    Nicely done. Thank your very much. As someone who has done this for several decades, this "felt" right.

    Years ago I made a card game about individual armed combat and used this reference plus a few others for details on guards, moves and defences. To this day I still haven't seen any game, PC, RPG or boardgame, that treats choosing the right opening stance as an important part of fighting.

    This is better than what I was looking for. Not only do you present the wards in an easy to follow format, but the production quality is stellar. Thank you for this contribution to UA-cam.

    At first glance, stance at 1:10 looks bad, basically flat footed and on one leg. However when pausing/rewatching, his back leg is bent at the knee so its not so bad. In future, I recommend you film with the knees/legs fully in view

      What's your take on 4th ward, the one after the ward in your timestamp? I can't picture any circumstance where you'd want to really stay in that position

    What parts of Michigan is your association located? I'm in the UP, Marquette area, and we're regrettably starved of any HEMA activities up here. I've done epee fencing with my dad growing up and some saber fencing in college. I've always felt fencing was more akin to LARPing 🤮 compared to HEMA.

    • @michiganmedieval
      @michiganmedieval  Рік тому +1

      We’re in Metro Detroit.
      Olympic sport fencing or kendo training can make good HEMA fighters, if applied in the right ways to the source material! Don’t lose heart! 👍

    Any chance of showing us your interpretation of 5th Guard from the other side?

    • @michiganmedieval
      @michiganmedieval  8 місяців тому +1

      Honestly, I had to contort my hand pretty awkwardly to get the blade to be on the correct angle, at the correct height, to match up with the illustration.
      When I’m sparring using this guard, I drop my hand much lower, near my belt.
      I suspect this will vary a bit from person to person, with different heights, body types and levels of wrist flexibility.
      Good luck!

    The footwork in the art looks very different than that demonstrated. Do you believe the artist took license?

    • @michiganmedieval
      @michiganmedieval  3 роки тому +6

      Honestly, we’re not entirely content with the footwork we demonstrated in this video. At some point we might go back and reshoot an addendum video with what more we’ve learned in the time since we’ve filmed this ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      @@michiganmedieval I enjoyed it nonetheless. Someone was claiming they walked differently because of their lack of supportive shoes. It was their explanation behind the seemingly unusual stances.

    No reason to train form on these if you believe the actual manual:
    Note how in general all fencers, or all men who hold a sword in hand, even when ignorant in the art of fencing, make use of these seven guards, on which we have seven verses:...

    Why standing on the toes...doesn't makes sense at all in fighting

    • @colbunkmust
      @colbunkmust 3 роки тому +3

      That's how people walked in the Medieval period, hard leather soled shoes didn't exist, so walking with the ball of your foot first helped to prevent you from committing your balance to an unstable or unsafe foothold.

    • @colbunkmust
      @colbunkmust 3 роки тому +1
