My Father's Family took part in the Abolitionist movement. They were Mennonites who immigrated to the U.S. before the Civil War. They wanted to practice their religion in peace. However, seeing the type of slavery that was happening, they couldn't. So, they would dig holes in their fields for the runaways to hide. I'm not sure what all they did. If any of them had been caught, they would have surely been killed. My Mother's Grandfather, or Great Grandfather, fled Ireland in the middle of the night with his brothers. My Mother thinks that they might have been part of the Irish liberation but they wouldn't speak of it to anyone.
