God bless you Tuan Syed, the ordinary malays are the best Malaysians, only the politician of certain parties are confusing the situations right now, hope the government of the day tackle this probelm.❤
Oh yes, when politicians say something to an intended audience, they are merely playing with words. And Prof has the perfect retort: "If you are truly Malay, you would be truly multicultural... Malays have been open for centuries to intercultural marriages, music, cuisine... If you are truly steeped in your own tradition, you would also appreciate another steeped in theirs..." Universal values matter coz we are not worse than nor better than, we are simply humans doing the best we can. Prof is about higher humanity, higher level culture here. Not pretence of culture, not pretence of being human. This video deserves to be forwarded far and wide.
All the Malaysian are ok bro, only the politician of certain political parties are creating havoc, the government of the day need to clear all this insane idiots than only we can progress.❤
Keep all religious leaders out of politics. Do not not mix politics and religion together. Only a Malay, Indian or as a Chinese are for all Malaysian. Not religious leaders for Malaysian. Leadership is not playing double game to get Muslim votes.
In indonesea jawanese, minang, aceh language, etc are taught in public school. In malaysia they want to change bugis ,jawanese etc to become malay. So how can we be multicultural?
Some comments here are absolutely absurd, beyond belief! Some talking about the english themselves were enslaved... So, did that give them the right to brutality and enslaving others?! NO! The British as a whole practiced divide and rule in every country they colonised! This is what's happening in Malaysia still despite the British leaving ages ago!!
"Re-embrace our lost past?" Have you seen how cultures were living in the past??? Nowhere near advance like today. Many weird practices were removed. Colonialism or not we have learned much from them and still are. We enjoy the modern world because of them. Our lives have improved tremendously. The professor can lament about mindset all he wants but the proof is in the pudding. Also, before western colonialism , groups around the world were already attacking, killing and enslaving one another a thousand years before that. England itself was once conquered and brutalized by the romans and the germanic tribes.
To say we were cut off from our own interlactual capabilities....the purpose of UNIVERSITY'S is to feed knowledge to contribute to society and develop and progress what already exists .....we must also know what has took place around the world not just Malaysia ....what kind of professor ....madness
Malaysians always see Yogyakarta as their fantasies of the past, but internal clash between faith and religion has never been stronger than within the psyche of Muslims in Java, where all the fundamentalist views grow rampant as traditional middle grounds cannot justify the compromises they made. Let us look into Zafn/Zapin tradition in Java for instance, which is the most orthodox compared to Sumatran and Malayan. Indonesia preaches egality but gave so much concession and preferential treatment to Yogyakarta's autonomy just because they cooperated in the struggle for independence. What is worst is that there is non-muslim Malaysians yearning for a romanticised 'great golden age of hindu-buddhist era of the past', but no one talked about the oppresive 'upeti' system of feudal Java, where most lands were owned by the nobles and the relationship between the lords and their serfdom were exploited by VOC and the Dutch. Let us also not forget the great deal of ultranationalist rewriting of historiography which did not happened to the same extent in Malaya. Malaysia has its own issues, but I think both have critical pros and cons.
Great podcast. Enjoyed listening to the insights and views of both the professor's and yours. And thank you for posting the full discussion.
Great discussion… very discerning questions and thoughtful answers.
Good 0ne, both of you.
