I'm re-releasing this video because Google got ahold of it and fed it to people as a news feed story. That totally ruined the numbers, as THOUSANDS of people watched it for like 20 seconds. :)
I would like to know the real numbers associated with it. Feel free to watch the whole thing again! More to come this year, including Teton Crest and Rae Lakes.

Thanks for this, I hope you can continue making content like this. Your analytical and pragmatic approach to hiking without ego, which, at times, doesn’t conform to the prevailing trends has always being refreshing. UL just for bragging rights has, and always will be, simply dumb. Your dreamsleeper pillow recommended years ago really helped in making me more comfortable. I’m with you 100% with the quilts. Thanks

Really enjoying your new format of "calm" hiking videos. I retired late in 2021, due to a buyout. I thru-hiked the CT in 2022. I live in the deep south but love the west, so I found a job working remotely that affords me to spend as much or little time as I want out west and the opportunity to hike and adventure. Anything is possible these days!

This loop is on my list. Speaking of permits, a friend and I did the Four Pass Loop this summer. Oh, the elevation gain, but the permits were pretty easy to get, we ended up with more than we needed.

Hey, Matt! So good to see and hear you!
I love this format. Nice combination of existence in nature and your valuable analysis.
If you only do one a year, an update to your gear list and your thoughts about itwould be wonderful.
If it's more than one, the occasional video like this or short one of your latest gear philosophy/item that caught your fancy would also be cool.
Glad you have successfully changed your work to provide the quality of life you need!

Ok so you’ve peaked my curiosity with your channel. Like your common sense and logic thoughts on gear but sometimes my view may be different as I think our types of trips and campsite locations may differ which affects gear choice. Gear is very personal but I always learning to see what might suit my needs better. My setup has changed dramatically in the past 5 years based on experience… Keep’em coming!

Nice to have you back now and again. We all change and evolve... Do you remember or are you aware of the old North Face Blue Kazoo bag which was made of heavier materials (2.2 lbs total) but had no side baffle so you could shake the down between the top and bottom, adjusting the amount of top insulation?

    • @MattShafter

Enjoyed the views. Interesting information and PoV about sleeping bags and quilts. I'm biased towards bags and I make mine. I start with a packable down throw - 60x70 inches and one pound. 700 FP down. I use synthetic insulation and reflective SOL blanket on the bottom and add down on the top. Also, put the zipper on top/center. Foot box is same as bottom - Climashield Apex. Total weight 26 to 29 ounces. Good to low 30F with Nemo Tensor pad and light base layer. Tom Loves DIY.

@@MattShafter I can't stand restrictive mummy bags. Might save a couple ounces but they bind. Also, side zippers are dumb. I put them onthe center/top. It's not difficult. I have some how to vids on my channel.
