It sounds really nice. I can see it being popular with the electronica scene, especially the LoFi beat makers, but personally loving those vintage 30’s/40’s/50’s jazz piano flavours.
Dear Dan, Thank you very much for this piano, it is worth every penny. You used very nice chord turns. Through the camera settings from above, I can wonderfully improvise a few of your chord progressions that I have not yet used.
I love how tape decks in the 90’s implemented technology (Dolby S for example) to try and get as close to cd quality as possible as that was the benchmark at the time. Amazing to think we strive for the faults and idiosyncrasies of bygone eras that tech people worked hard to eradicate. We are in an amazing digital era where we truly can have everything we want or need at a reasonable cost or free. As I result I think creativity will once again rise to the top as being the thing that sets us and our music apart. I like the top down shot, what camera do you use? I’m trying the same shot but finding I can’t get a wide enough without taping my dslr to the ceiling.
I think in the world of sampling it's an easy way to make every note sound a little different, plus it masks any unwanted noises by branding it under 'lofi'. The top down is a Panasonic GH5 with a 12-60mm lens on a tall boom light stand. At this height, it's parallel to the desk at about 3 feet above. Here I have the lens at 18mm to avoid the clutter on my desk, but nice to have the scope to go a little wider
Theres some theory that in any given technical generation, we try to reproduce the errors and inconsistencies that were prevelent in the previous generation. So in music we like tape effects, vinyl noise, saturation etc. In digital film we like lensflares and film grading. They maybe the imperfections that artists always wanted to remove but now they've control over them they're liked because they make it feel more human.
The perfect piano sound for illustrate a romantic/love scene in a 30s or 40s movie, especialy with the kind of harmonies you play. (Evening, in a posh art déco appartement: "Ho, George, do you realy love me? Yes, my darling, I would die for your eyes!" etc... The violins will come soon on the next cue, just before the cut-to-black non-existent bed scene) And personnaly I find the room reverb quite nice and in the mood of such scene. BTW I would love to find a plugin which could emulate the glitching and poping sound of the optical (not magnetic) tracks of the early movies. If it exists, let me know.
Agreed, I think that's basically what happened here too. I'm gonna make a video about making normal pianos sound more realistic by sounding a bit dirtier
Ah, it's a beauty! It's by a guy who messaged me on Twitter (@nativeVS). He's currently putting the finishing touches on it, mine is a pre-production model
There seems to be a real push to get back to the wow and flutter of cassette tapes. Having lived through that period, and being very glad it is over, I am in wonder by all of the attention it is getting. I am still stuck with old piano recordings on cassette from the 70s and 80s that I can not really use because of the poor quality. So what is the attraction to this? I admit your demo has great fidelity, by why wow and flutter? Thanks Dan.
If I may suggest, you’re thinking purely from your own perspective. When you couldn’t record easily without distortions like wow and flutter the relative novelty of clarity seems desirable. When you grow up in a world of high fidelity DAW’s with their “perfect” sound quality anything that adds movement, life and unexpected outcome becomes desirable.
@@ajmerron_writes Yes, indeed I am. I have recorded modern works with the wow and crackle of vinyl, but can tell you my actual vinyl has neither. In my case it was done for the illusion of time. Too bad I can't attach an old cassette recording to this. I have some from a portable recorder that make Dan's piano demo sound pristine :-)
That's an interesting thought, Emil. I think in the world of sampling it's an easy way to make every note sound a little different, plus it masks any unwanted noises by branding it under 'lofi'. I think you're right that it may be an illusion of time, but I can't say I don't like it, and it does somehow feel old-school to me
Just a pastiche of my demo really - ua-cam.com/video/b6QzKo7-Iu4/v-deo.html. Most of these are improvised except for where I accidentally butcher absolute classics
It might come across like that when I say they gave me the product for free - to be fair, this is often the case for reviewers of all products, not just sample libraries - but that's as much payment as I've ever received from them. I don't get commission by affiliation and they didn't pay me to try it out
@@DanKeenMusic well it sounds pretty cool I may have to try it. Also wonder how it compares to their newest release golden age grand

Hi Dann! I find your channel very interesting. We create the same type of content (All about composition) only that I in Spanish and you in English haha, I invite you to review it, surely you will find something of your interest, a greeting from Madrid (Spain).
if you're showcasing an instrument provided for free you should disclose it. On youtube studio you HAVE to check the INCLUDED PAID PROMOTIONS tab. Also if you can offer a discount with your name, you ARE affiliated with the brand.
I agree, which is why I placed it at the top line of the description. Regarding paid promotions, I don’t think this qualifies. Teletone Audio sent me the piano, and having played and enjoyed it, I told them I was going to review it - they then sent a promo code. There’s no paid promotion here, I get lots of emails from lovely sample developers asking to send their libraries for feedback
@@DanKeenMusic unfortunately, you're wrong. even if the developer does not pay you with cash, they payment is, int this case, the value of the sample library. When you've received the piano, it could be considered a gift if you keep it for yourself but if you promote it, the value of the piano qualifies as payment for the promotion you're making. I had a tons of tax headache for this reason! unfortunately all the things you can write in the comments or descriptions are not enough. checking the button does not cost anything, provides transparency and keep you on the right side.
Dan Keen is a legend for making this video since it showcases everything about the plugin well, but I still agree with Cool Vibes Radio since it is a form of promotion for the plugin, indirectly paid by the plugin manufacturer.
It sounds really nice. I can see it being popular with the electronica scene, especially the LoFi beat makers, but personally loving those vintage 30’s/40’s/50’s jazz piano flavours.
Overhead camera is very nice touch to your video! Your videos are always so informative!
Thanks, glad you liked them. Overheads are a bit of a game changer, especially with the live videos!

Beautiful playing Dan
Agree!
Excellent, Dan: bought it with the "dankeen" promo. Thanks for doing this video! Already reworked an older piece with it.

Lovely sounding piano but I imagine you could get pretty close with a wobbly tape emulator on a normal piano

Sounds great Dan. I’d love to hear some Fats Waller/ James P Johnson style playing on this Piano. 🙂
Perfectly imperfect. That's the kind of stuff I am usually drawn to. Well done Dan!
Wonderful review! Thanks mate
I love your tune. Beautiful writing
Cool piano! But what I really want to know is what is the midi fader box you have and where can I get one?
Ah, it's a beauty! It's by a guy who messaged me on Twitter (@nativeVS). He's currently putting the finishing touches on it, mine is a pre-production model
Absolutely mesmerised by the sound, and your playing! Thank you for making this video. :)
Nice video! Great to have the overhead camera!
Very informative, thank you! Just subscribed🙌
Hi Dan, was that first tune something you improvised?
Fantastic video Dan, great piano playing as well
Marvelous sounds. Thanks Dan.
Oohh I love that Sirens sound!

Hey Dan!
Can I ask where did you get that small 4 fader midi controller?
Thanks
Really enjoyed this video :-)
The music reminds me of my grandfarthers place.

Thumbs up + subscribed.
Amazing video
What is that new compact 4 fader unit to your left? 😮
reminds me of over the garden wall
Nice job 👍
Can you create a piece of music using albion one?
Charming
Nice!
what is that first piano piece you played?
around the 3 min mark

Logic user with Cubase mouse pad... Nice :)
I noticed that too😳
Picked it up for free YEARS ago at a music tech convention, before I knew that Cubase was a DAW 🤭
Dan, what are your top 5 Kontakt piano libraries?
Good question! Favourite pianos right now:
1. Woodchester Upright
2. Keyscape
3. Postcard Piano
4. My BLM Piano Toolkit
5. LABS Soft Piano
@@DanKeenMusic nice, thanks! I'm familiar (and i love) most of those except 3 & 4. Which reminds me, i need to pick up your BLM Piano soon!
appreciate the breakdown and detail but this seems more like an ad for the plugin rather than an unbiased review
