    It’s been awhile! Sadly had to say goodbye to the brick wall, but what do you think of the new background?
    Also let us know if you have any of your own recommendations!

    Very helpful, Alivia! I will give them a go. I'm 77 y o male in Texas and have been "learning" Japanese for 40 years. Lately, I have listened to Yoshie, a Japanese lady living in Paraguay. Also to Miru, who is a little ol' lady who has interesting topics about Japan (not the walk-around random lesson, but usually a topic like honne vs tatemae.) Yuka has a new series where she takes a snippet of live conversation with a store salesperson or a cafe hostess in unscripted conversations. These conversations have the advantage of using polite words, shortened words, filler words, and technical words all in one salad, and then she analyzes every little ne? to show what it means. All in Japanese, although she also speaks very fluent Chinese on some videos.
    Thanks for the new sources. I agree with your opinion about youtube being the best resource. I love kanji and it is also improving as I listen to. It also helps to anchor new vocabulary if I have a visual that is familiar. UA-cam helps tons.
    I love your enthusiasm and helpfulness. Keep it coming!

    It's not really a podcast or strictly for listening comprehension but a really great channel I've been watching recently is Easy Peasy Japanese.
    She takes a scene from an anime and then breaks down one of the sentences in it, explaining the grammar/vocab used and giving plenty of examples of how they can be used in different contexts. The videos are really well done and incredibly useful for learning new kanji/grammar and are pretty good for listening practice too.

    Thank you for introducing Onomappu. I am at a somewhat intermediate level of Japanese after living here for several years but never studying the language. When listening to native speakers, I have always felt that women are easy to understand but men, for some reason, are not. I don't know if they mumble their words or don't enunciate clearly, or if there is a wide difference in the words they use, or what. But I have a very difficult time understanding what Japanese men are saying. This guy, Onomappu, speaks slowly and clearly and I am pretty sure I understand very close to, if not 100% of, everything he says.

    One channel I really like for listening comprehension practice is なかのいつきの日常 & ラムダ技術部 for general "every day" youtubers (the former is a very fast talker and the latter uses quite a bit of math, tech, etc.) but the topics they talk about are related to every-day things. However, there are other youtubers ike Saki Kawamura (though she will speak in English in her videos sometimes or entirely (typically tagged with 英語トーク、英語学習方法、など in the title) that are also about everyday life and the english is related to the topic of the video but she doesn't break down anything in English like Easy Peasy Japanese would. In addition, some personal reccomendations would be ことラブ、Toshiki Masuda、いごっそう (very casual and sometimes use 関西弁)、公式 竹田恒泰、みずにゃんちゃねる.

    These recommendations are awesome, I've tried studying Japanese a couple of times already in the last couple of years, but my motivation is lost after a few days of it, this time I've decided that I won't give up, I'll make it more fun to learn the language than a chore, someone please reply to me in a year to ask me if I'm still learning, if I'm not than this comment is a promise to myself that I will pick it up again and learn it.

      I’m so glad you’re getting back into it! It can be easy to get bogged down by all the different routines and tools out there, but having fun is the most important thing! Don’t be afraid to switch things up if what you’re doing ever feels like a chore ☺️ You got this!!

      @@AliviasNook Thanks for the speedy reply and great advice. What you say is absolutely true and I'll definitely switch things up if I feel like it's becoming a chore. I went and followed all of the basic and even intermediate Japanese UA-cam channels that you recommended and I think they're amazing so thanks for that. I desperately want to understand everything the Japanese Peppa Pig is saying lol, but I'll get there eventually. Sorry for the ramblings haha I appreciate you.

      @@ravenharu3034 Unfortunately not. I got a job 4 months ago and am too tired and unmotivated to learn Japanese afterwards. That doesn't spell the end for my language learning journey though, although it does put it on a temporary indefinite hiatus. Who knows, maybe I'll find a way to balance my work and responsibilities along with learning languages, hopefully nipping my procrastination-habits in the bud.

    Eyy, welcome back! Been missing this channel; it's definitely helped me a lot with learning Japanese thus far. I actually slowed down a bit this past month so I could focus on some other life stuff, but I just started seriously studying again yesterday so you've got great timing heh
    I've used Comprehensible Japanese a *ton* since you initially talked about it, so I'll definitely be checking out the other channels you mentioned. In addition to those, I'd say Japanese Let's Plays are a good resource as well. Japanese Let's Players usually speak casually, and are often referring to something on screen so you can get a lot of the meaning through inference. (Plus, with V-Tubers exploding in popularity recently, there are a *lot* of channels to choose from that frequently upload and often have translations available, if needed)
    Amano Pikamee in particular seems like a good starting point, as she speaks both English and Japanese and often repeats herself in both languages so that all her viewers can understand.

    • @AliviasNook
      @AliviasNook  3 роки тому

      Nice to see you again too! I also found my studies slipping a bit, the nice weather and lockdowns ending is just too distracting lol !
      I love the idea of watching let's plays! Are there any games in particular that you like to watch? I'll definitely checkout Amano :)

    • @Deddshot
      @Deddshot 3 роки тому

      @@AliviasNook It really has been nice getting back out, huh? Though I live in Oklahoma so the nice weather very quickly turned into *scorching heat* lol. (Not gonna stop me from going out though, even if I melt a little every time)
      I generally like watching Let's Plays for newer games, or weird obscure games that I never would have found otherwise. It's really cool seeing the crazy kinds of games people make just for fun, or as small indie titles. Oh, and also horror games. Always fun to watch people get spooked heh
      Hope you like her, btw! I don't watch many V-Tubers, but she's definitely one of the few I enjoy and she just happens to have a great format for someone who wants to learn more Japanese so _nice_

    Thank you for the resource recommendations.
    2 recommendations though:
    1. Could you keep the channels your referencing up longer on screen? I get that we can pause but they passed really quickly while you were describing them. So I would have to play back almost each time to get the channel after listening enough to decide if I even wanted that specific channel.
    2. Perhaps a controversial opinion, but I wouldn’t tell people to drop Japanese subtitles too lightly. I used to be in this mindset as well but have come to realize over time that comprehensible input is far more important than trying to dive in the deep end of your weak point and hope for much success. I personally have found much more listening improvement since getting over the use of subtitles stigma. It seems to me from my own anecdotal experience along with listening to a few other language channels that it’s more a of case by case thing whether someone’s listening or reading skill improves faster. But removing one leg to improve the other doesn’t seem as effective.
    Otherwise thank you again for the recommendations.

    Japanese with Shun has started to make a couple of vlogs so his channel might be worth keeping an eye on. They seem to be a bit higher level than his Genki podcasts, N5-N3, with 100% kana subtitles to follow along with.
