  • formed in 1962 by a few art school students who began to play a mix of old 1920's style music and dixieland jazz standards....by 1967 they were well on their way to success as a fully formed outfit that started to appear on national t.v. shows and larger venues....the line-up was stabilised enough to record two singles that promptely went no where but a spot on a new t.v.show 'do not adjust your set' gave them an opportunity to appear weekly and gain a whole new audience as they started to play in a more 'rock oriented' direction that appealed to rock clubs/university's and t.v shows....the line-up as far as i can make out here in these clips from that show is : vivian stanshall/'legs'larry smith/neil innes/roger ruskin spear/rodney slater/vernon dudley bowhay nowell and sam spoons...but it was a very flexible line-up!...'67 also saw the bands debut album released 'gorilla' ( i must admit i did buy it on release...) and really opened the door for them to bigger shows....appearing in the beatles film 'magical mystery tour' caught them playing 'death cab for cutie'....i have edited out one track here as i'm sure youtube in their wisdom would have blocked the video for 'unsuitable viewing' in these woke times...which we wont go into here.....i saw them live at an allnighter in london '69 and they came on at 3 in the morning with a 'mystery' drummer with painted on glasses etc but you knew instantly it was keith moon! one of the best shows i've witnessed....

It’s crazy that the singer is the same guy now playing Paul McCartney. I wonder how many people know that fact? This guy is a very good musician actor and vice impersonator.

      "Fact," you say?
The only fact is that you have fallen for a far-fetched and ridiculous conspiracy theory.
The biggest load of rubbish since the flat earth, which you probably believe as well.

I just wanted to put a comment in, given how many times I played all of their LPs. This is that comment.

The one band that makes me glad I’m still alive to hear them again and again and again etc. Thanks for your work.

I got to see these cats open for The Who, 1969, Hollywood Palladium, My 8th grade graduation present. Bitchen Band! They toss’d dummies on stage, made everyone think they were hecklers! They are the best band ever

These are from the UK TV series Do Not Adjust Your set. You can spot Eric Idle standing in for Neil Innes when Neil had the flu. Apart from John Cleese and Hraham Chapman, all the other Pythons appeared in these shows.

Thanks so much for this! I was never late home from school when these guys were on 'Do not adjust your set' a subversive weekly delight on kids TV that only ended when the presenter carelessly used an utterly vile word - genitalia.

Great band ,but this was somewhat of an anti climax. Monty Python would do this much better.
    Stanshall is beyond criticism ofcourse.🖐🏽👺

Maybe so but the Bonzos pre date Python & perhaps Spike Milligan did it better than the Pythons...
