My face on coins - Silver and Bronze coin minting - Reeded edges! - xTool P2

  • In this video I'll be making custom coins with my own face on them. I used the xTool P2 55w laser engraver to make a pattern out of acrylic and the sand cast these coins in silver and bronze. I was able to reed the edges by using a knurling die set up in the milling machine.

    I recommend watching how real currency coins are minted after this because if you don't know, you'd expect it to be like this, but on a much larger scale, and it's not. It's totally different, and essentially, the coins are punched out of metal and then stamped. It happens so fast that in quarters alone, just ONE of the three US mints makes over ten thousand dollars an hour.

    really cute and cool idea!!! i think the laser could be used to mark before hand where your coins round out, just along the outside of it, so you have a better mark already done. also for the knurling, turn from the other direction. right hand rule on the force/velocity to keep the coin from bouncing out... well, unless it was too hard and wasn't working

I have a stack of bearings and a straight knurl wheel that i haven't quite figured out how to arrange... your reeding setup looks amazing too. I'm taking a stack of custom coins in bronze and zamak to trade at the viking festival today!

    In the distant future archeologists will find these and wonder why they look so different from the currency usually found in the area. At first they wonder if they discovered a rare, but official government coin. They'll wonder what famous historical figure or leader you were.
    Then after taking it back to the linguists and translating the word "Foundry" they'll understand that these were hand crafted by a humble blacksmith who put his own face and name on them for fun! And they'll have a little chuckle. And imagining that makes me happy :)

    Wow! Those might be the cleanest sand cast coins I've ever seen! The reeding was a nice touch. I've heard that was an anti-counterfiting measure invented by Isaac Newton.

    • @SilverSeeker
      @SilverSeeker 8 місяців тому

      It's wasn't an anti-counterfeiting measure. It was to prevent Gold and Silver coins from being shaved down. People would shave off a bit of the edges of their coins and collect the shavings making the coins weigh less than they were supposed to. They would eventually melt down the shavings and have free Gold and Silver.

    These look FANTASTIC!!! I can't believe you got so much detail using acrylic and a laser!!!! haha!!! Do you think you could engrave a 3d surface? like not just one depth across the pattern, but having depth to it like on US coin... I think it could be done... but it would probably be easier if you did it with one LARGE coin so you could get a lot of detail without it having to be etched really deep.... GREAT WORK!!!!

    Could you make a jig to glue them to a piece of stock, then circularise them in the lathe? Like a v-block with a couple shims, the stock on the shims, then tape-glue-tape the coin to the stock?
    And remember to bury some, preferably in some ritualistic-looking arrangement. It'll really confuse some future archeologist.

    Could've used superglue to glue the coins to your lathe as well, on a prepared round piece in the jaws of the same diameter or smaller, to help you guide it as close to center as possible. Heat would dislodge the glue (heat the mandrel, not the coin).

    you forgot one step... before the knurling you have to push up a lip around the edges..... :)
    I would think you coulld easily do it the same way you did the knurling but with out the teeth.... but maybe you would have to flip it just like you had to with knurling, and you'd probably have to use a bit more pressure... maybe using a slightly angles piece to press against the coin would not only keep it from sliding upwards but you would only be pushing up one edge at a time..... oh but if it's too much of an angle it would push the metal out of the edge, huh..... hrmmm ... maybe using an angled piece isn't such a great idea... well, maybe LOL I guess it would be a bit of trial and error...

      @@astygmatyzm9071 It depends on intent. Under 18 U.S. § 486, it's a criminal offense to make or pass any metal coins "intended for use as current money ...". Doesn't even need to resemble legal currency.
