- In the mid 1990s, Nintendo announced the 64DD disk drive add-on for the N64 for the US market ....but it never came out. Instead the Japanese version of the drive crashed and burned upon release and it took all the hopes of US gamers ever buying one along with it. For almost 20 years it was consider a myth that an actual US retail version exists... until now. I have found a working prototype of the 64DD for the US market AND it contains a developer blue diskette inside of its drive. This unit is unique in many ways and in this video I tell you all the things that make it special...and what happens next...

Region-locking needs to die out. Why punish people who import their games? Why should I or anyone else have to be punished for buying a perfectly legit game in one territory and trying to play it in another? What if I travel a lot? That's not protection, it's treating the customer like a criminal!

It doesn't need to take time. Region-locking needs to end RIGHT NOW. It took less time to go from having no space program in America to landing Neil Armstrong on the moon. Nintendo needs to stop being retarded and join the 21st century. It's 2016; old ways get forced out of society.
So great when you can just pop a game in from elsewhere and it will work. I even bought a Japanese PS3 baseball game, just cause I could (and cause the batting was like MLB Power Pros, which is fun as hell).
Region locks are stupid but in some countries it does make sense. Japan's import can be horrible at pricing, because of this they want to region lock stuff so people don't start importing it themselves (money going OUT of the country, not staying within). A good example of how Japan aproaches this without region locks is how they handle their CD releases. Bands get a choice - make bonus tracks for the Japanese release (this is why there are so many japanese releases of CD's) or well. We don't release it here. What bands then do is string some bonus tracks on it so it's in the eyes of the Japanese consumers "worth" the higher price.

Try contacting fangamer, they've been dealing with a lot of n64DD stuff over the years, they might know something or know someone who can get what is needed to load your blue disk.

It was never finished, however I think there was a playable early demo at Spaceworld 1999. Even if that's on there, I'd shit my pants, too.
I highly doubt it'd be Earthbound 64. That game wasn't finished, and Nintendo certainly wouldn't have translated it to English during development 'cause remember, Earthbound SNES bombed horribly. No one bought it, so Nintendo saw the US as a dead market for anything Earthbound.

The game remained unfinished, and wasn't translated into English at the time it was shown off. And probably only 1 Development cartridge existed, considering it wasn't even playable when it was shown off.
If anything, Iwata probably had it in his archive and probably still does to this day die despite his death.
It's either in the hands of Nintendo, Hal, or it was destroyed long ago.
An early version of Paper Mario, Kirby 64 or Banjo Tooie would be much more plausible considering those games had come out at around this time

When I was in primary school, my friend had told me that there was a new add-on for the N64 coming out soon that would use floppy disks, and that he had seen it because his dad had it for a few days before he returned it to someone.

I can tell you from personal researching that that 64dd was holding a developer disk, it is a different color from the original n64 dd disk gray. It can only work with a Developer N64 DD that have a blue disk drive. I would be honored to help you search for a developer console so you can play and see what's in the contents of that disk.
Originally, the N64DD had multiple types of prototypes, there was a computer that could run a type of disk's similar in format to a normal n64dd that were larger than normal n64dd disk's, then had the blue prototype consoles which could run those blue developer disk's, then the released japan version, and scrapped the USA version of the N64DD, which contained the rare USA bios of the N64DD.
There is nothing wrong with the disk itself, it can't run on a normal n64DD due to the BIO's within the motherboard. We would need a Developer console that *obviously* contain the Developer BIO's.
IF, IF what is on the disk is an early retail version of the online services software they had been working on for Japan then there may be specific hardware requirements that must also be present before the disk would boot.
iirc, there was (is) an external modem being developed that plugged into the bottom of the n64 itself and would have likely been required for a dial-up connection to the online services Nintendo had planned.
The modem was never released in NA afaik as well.
Please keep in mind this is purely speculation on my part.
Metal Jesus definitely needs to find one of the developer cartridges though to complete his testing for us all to see.
The N64 is region free, but there is a physical part in the N64 which stops other region cartridges from fitting inside the slot. There is a way to cut off that part and stick the other region cart inside. So if it was cut off, it POSSIBLY could work.

There's actually quite a few expansions
TheDarkToes as of what i know, the DD drive is the only accessory that uses the bottom port. Maybe you are thinking of the controller accessory port?

There was a addon wich used the slot, cant remember for sure, somethinge like doctor.n64 or so, u could copy the games to a ZIP cardige and play from them when i remember.. always wanted that thing 😂

When I was younger I would always wonder what the n64 had the slot on the bottom. I thought it was something akin to a cartridge duplication function. Not proud to admit I tried jamming the cartridges that way
There were unofficial add ons that used that slot, like the Doctor V64, which you could use to load N64 games onto CDs

It's not because he need something special to play it, error 1 means "01: N64 disk drive may have been broken down, or Disk may be bad.", and I got this from searching N64DD error 1, and the website was Zetaboards. #SpreadTheWord

It was never an urban legend. Everyone knew that there was an Atari dump out in the middle of the desert. It was even reported on in the local newspapers of that area when Atari did that back in '83!
What WAS an urban legend was that the dump had nothing but E.T. cartridges, which turned out to be false and there were actually far less E.T. cartridges in there than suspected.

Why has no one tried to reverse engineer the DD system add on? people could make custom roms for it and expand their own games, or even include it in an emulator.... people could do cool things with this forgotten add on... why has no one implemented this? i know allot don't have the know how to do such a thing, but I'm sure someone out there could figure it out and implement it themselves.

I worked at Nintendo at one time. But I was only an underling that installed firmware on wii consoles and reported any debug errors to the engineers and handed the defected consoles to them. Sure I played Wii Sports a couple months before the Wii was even released in USA, but I was only an underling and I can tell ya that policies are a pretty big thing inside to keep secrets from leaking out. Hopefully a policy doesn't hold back people from telling the story about this great DD device.

Damn Nintendo. I bought the 64 with the promise of the DD to come out and give PlayStation a run for its money, only for it to never come out.
Yeah, it's a shame Nintendo felt intimidated by Sony's PS2 machine, a machine that in the end crapped and lost to the newcomer Microsoft's Xbox. Had they gone full balls-deep in the N64 and the DiskDrive instead of the Gamecube, they would've triumphed over the two rival companies.
Just imagine, instead of the GC, to buy the 64DD in 2002, playing Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, TLOZ:Wind Waker, StarFox 64 2, Conker's Other Bad Day...a dream we will never see made into a reality.

I remember always getting what my friends didn't have. It was like a potluck, but with video games.
So I had the Playstation, so someone got the N64. One of them got the Dreamcast, so then I got the PS2 (which was 900 bucks on eBay and that was 'a good deal').
From there, consoles got cheaper and the sharing ended.
Tbh, I miss the gaming parties. It's not at all the same online.

No crushing them in Twisted Metal and then gloating 3 inches from them.

This is easily one of the greatest finds in video game history, and one of the lost wonders of the gaming atmosphere (now found).
My uncle has the 64dd. When I was a kid, I would go to his house when he would leave to Vegas and I would pop a CD into the disk drive and have access to 50 N64 games per disk. Both a mixture from Japanese and US games
He was very stingy on who used it most of the time though so I only used it a handful of times. He still has it till this day.

Hey metal jesus, how did you get the N64 to have 720P video out on your TV? do you have your N64 modded with an HDMI output or do you have some kind of converter device like the Framemesiter?
I use a simple Composite to HDMI converter by ENKO - $30 on Amazon and works great.

Actually Sony and Microsoft also did that with their consoles since they entered the market. What part of mistake is that? Everyone region locked their consoles.

+Super_Coal_Blox Actually the 360 is region locked, but that's up to the developer. The ps3 and ps4 were not but have the option too. But they all supported it with nintendo back then. And what's a little lock doing other than stopping imports? You could just get the local version instead.

@MetalJesusRock i'd try to check with The Ben Heck Show. You probably know them already but they took apart the playstation/nintendo prototype and made it work. So if someone can get this thing to work or perhaps remove the region lock ? read the blue disk ? , it's most likely them. I am curious to know what the hell is on that blue disc.

Looks almost exactly like the Doctor64 that I owned except where the HDD goes there was a CDRom drive for you to load your ROMs from.
Hard 4 games has a dev n64 dd maybe you could try the disk in that.

when I was a kid I always wondered what you put in the slot under the 64
Sam Hill SNES had the same slot. SNES for the CD add on they were working on with Sony until Nintendo backed out on and now we have the PlayStation brand.

I know someone here in Michigan who told me about the 64DD release in japan back in 1997. He is now an electrical engineer and has eeprom burners and oscilloscopes and a basement full of custom arcades. He can definitely find out whats on that disc ill send him the clip.
But... can it run Crysis?
