  • This is a pretty common issue on the 2008-2010 Escapes, turn the wheel about a quarter turn and it clunks and feels loose and then might tighten up and pop loose again. Quick and easy check of steering ujoint will point you in the direction

    Thanks so much for posting this. I've been noticing this on my 2008 Mariner lately and just like you said, the steering has started to get a little spooky, i.e. hard to find center, especially on the highway! As I just passed 200k, it seems this u-joint could be the likely culprit. Appreciate the explainer on what to look for and how to approach it. I just preemptively replaced the inner and outer tie rods on both sides (lots of play) and this looks to be my next adventure.

    Thanks for posting this. I have the play in the wheel plus, when I hit a bump, the truck will pull to that direction, making for a very difficult to keep on the road 2005 Ford Escape XLT. If I so much as look to long in a mirror or road sign it begins to drift, but hit a bump and then it really goes. Can't seem to find anyone here in Louisville Ky who can DX it.

    Oh boy. I hope that's what is wrong with mine. I thought for awhile it had something to do with the rack and pinion. But I noticed just a few days ago it started to have a ton of play in the steering wheel . And is why it maybe pulling left and right depending what wheel hits a cracked in the road ..
    Before the steering was extremely hard to turn especially when the brake was applied .
    Another question I have . Which I do believe I know it's a rotor causing the Ford to shake when the brake is applied .
    Could it be anything else? I know about cars but ford's have a strange engine and set up .
    Especially this 2008 Ford Escape. Never seen a engine with all the wires visible and ontop of the motor.

    • @HooptiesGarage

      If it's only doing when braking good chance it's the rotors

    Thanks my friend. Great video! I'm thinking you may be correct- I'm no mechanic by any means, but after scouring dozens of forums and posts it seems logical this is the reason.
    I have an ‘11 Escape FWD and hear a slight knocking, clunking, coming from the drivers side when turning at low speeds. I just had the infamous halfshaft repair done for the inner cv/bushing leak out of the transmission ($800 later…) and now this… I heard it could be numerous things, but I wonder if its more of a nuisance or something that should be replaced definitely?
    Others said it could be:
    Steering ujoint coupler
    Sway Bar Links or Bushings
    Top Motor Mount
    CV joint
    Control arm bushings
    Strut bearing binding up (front strut slipping in the tower, or bad ball joint)
    Retighten bolts on end links

    • @HooptiesGarage
      @HooptiesGarage  4 роки тому +1

      It would be easy to check just get your eyeballs on the joint and have someone rotate the steering wheel back and forth if you let it go too long it will get pretty spooky driving it because the play gets worse and it feel like your steering wheel is disconnected from the rack until it catches again, it's a little unnerving when it gets to that stage.

    Does a 2003 Escape have a similar design inside the boot? I checked out the front end throughly but didn't find the culprit. When I have the front wheels off the ground, and move the wheel itself in and out with hands at 9 and 3, it clacks from back in that area. I thought it was just the steering wheel lock post playing in the lock hole but this is definitely something to explore.
    Nice video, very helpful. Keep em coming. You are a good instructor.

    Awesome video. Just grabbed a 2012 and yup same problem. Is there an upper and how common is to replace the upper?
    I ask because my lower is definitely shot and mine makes the same noise but also makes this awkward grinding noise as you keep turning the wheel. (Sound is definitely still from the steering column)

    • @HooptiesGarage
      @HooptiesGarage  3 роки тому

    Yesterday my 2007 Ford Escape started making noise in the steering wheel when turning it mostly to the left like scraping then it progressed into catching popping knocking. Thought it might need steering column, steering shaft. It was really scary driving thought my steering wheel was going to come apart. Could this be my issue also? A man looked at it and he said my power steering lines were jumping then someone said steering box so I am lost these men of course not mechanics just people on the street at the auto parts store guessing cause I was concerned if I should be driving. How much is this too fix so I have some idea? Just want to know cause some mechanics do take advantage of women in garages sadly. And my power steering fluid is at the level it should be no leaks.

      Got the alignment done at the dealer. And they did alignment but messed up the steering. It was end of the day so paid for alignment n they closed the doors. Next day went back to dealer to explain that they messed up the steering during alignment, and they argued that i shouldn't have gone out of parking lot.
