You are a genius. Both of my wipers were not working, so I went to the dealer and they didn't even inspect it. Just said, "yep, you need new wiper arms". They then priced out two new wiper arms for over $400. I got a little suspicious. I then stumbled upon this video and this technique worked like a charm. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this tutorial. I spent my Saturday afternoon trying to find an open car repair shop that would deal with this problem for me and when Sunday rolled around I realized I was facing a week without a working windshield wiper and no time to take the vehicle in.
Within 10 minutes after watching your video it was back up and wiping again. You saved me the money and the hassle on the repair. Good man.
I just did this in under 10 mins, my van's rear wiper was fixed! Thank you SO much!
Thank you very much. Yesterday I was thinking to find a mechanic to fix my car's wiper arm which was damaged because of ice and snow. This morning it was snowing, and again I though how to fix it. After watching this video, I've learned how to fix. I watched, I fixed, and I saved time and money. Again thank you very much. Sorry for my English. I know it is not good as my Spanish, but I'm trying.
thanks for a great video...broke my drivers wiper tonight on a 1996 Impala SS and have no time to visit the dealership for the next 4 days...removed both wiper arms and cleaned the spindles and now I just need to buy new arms on my lunch...luckily, no snow forecast tomorrow! thanks again for teaching me something new!
Thank you so much for this video i have replaced 3 wiper arms in 3 months i am a 63 yr old woman and i watched this video and tried this and lo and behold it worked you r the best
Big help!! My wife's wiper arm disconected form the moter, used this to learn how to take off the wiper and "snap" it back into place. Thank You
This just happened to me this morning due to an ice storm. Thanks for the video
Absolutely fantastic... the arm on my ford got caught and i was driving in heavy rain with the passenger wiper stuck down. within ten mins i fixed it. a good clean simple video fix... even for a man that last messed with cars at school. Thanks again :D
Again-Thanks!!! I haven't checked yet to make sure this is my problem, as it is night time and it is pouring outside, but I'm sure this is it! Will check it out for sure in the morning. Your videos are the best!!
You've helped me more times than I can remember!
Thanks for this video. I just replaced the plastic vent panel below my wiper arms on another brand vehicle and your instructions helped. Getting those arms off was not easy!
TY, I just had my windshield replace and they put the wipers back not quite right and they were hitting one another. Your clip allowed me to adjust the top wiper so I can drive safely!
I felt so at home listening and watching this your deff from my neck of the woods !! New England life baby!
AWESOME!!! Fixed mine perfectly. You think they're shot...till you clean out the the spline drive. Remounted and now its solid! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Rich YOU ROCK!!! Total time to make my '01 Camaro SS Convertible windshield wipers run like new...
Thank you soooo much for this! My windshield wipers quit working, and this worked perfectly!
Thank you for the posting. It's very helpful. One wiper on my minivan quit working earlier today when I tried to turn it on with wet snow in the windshield. The instruction is easy to follow and I fixed mine in 10 minutes.
Thank you this worked great. I drive to work very early in the a.m. and just noticed as were getting rain and snow storm that the passenger side windshield wiper would not work at all. Did the suggestion and also noticed a missing washer and everything works pefectly. Vehicle 2007 Town and Contry Minivan.
worked great!! had one quit working awhile ago, then the other one quit the other day. I was afraid it was the wiper motor but this did the trick, thanks for posting! was quick and easy
Glad you got them working right again.
I am glad i could be of help....O before i forget Merry Christmas to all.
OMG this worked! My wiper caught some wind and flipped out to the driver's side mirror. It wouldn't move after that. THANK YOU PETER GRIFFIN!
You bet.
Thanks so much! I followed instructions and now it's working fine. I figured it was something like that because the actual nut would rotate, but the blade wouldn't follow.
Cool!
Doesn't have to be vehicle specific. Always interesting to see how stuff is done. Never know what you'll be asked to work on next.
As always. Thank you for sharing. You have some of the best tutorials on the Internet. My Neon is still running great after following your walk through and advice
Worked for me! I couldn't even see the splines at all when I removed the wiper arm. It was just a smooth shaft of polished aluminium dust caked into the groves between the splines. Thanks!
Thank you for making this video. This got my blade spinning again.
I'm so happy to live in the time of the internet.
Me to love it.
Thank you sooooooo much!!! All by myself and no tools to speak of and this was so helpful! !!
Much Thanks. Not a mechanic so I was thinking I'd have to replace the motor. Watched your vid and was able to fix the problem, loose bolt, in about 5 minutes at night in a snowstorm.
Every time I wonder why I keep a rusty dull jackknife in my toolbox, I find another use for it. Thanks, Rich! Saved me an expensive trip to the shop; I was worried I'd broken an armature or something and they aren't immediately visible on a Subaru Impreza, but this fixed 'er right up with just a 14mm socket and 15 minutes of scratching.
+Robble Robble A lot of people turn on the wipers when they are frozen to the glass and this stripping of the arm occurs.
thank you for this video. 2 nights ago, I was caught driving in a rain storm and my driver's side wiper arm stopped working, for this very reason. I pulled into a filling station and waited the storm out, because I didn't know what was wrong with it. I had no idea what to do, until I watched this. Works now and it costed me zero dollars to fix it.
@tjleavy You are right it is very cool seeing a mom fix her car.
Thanks so much. My husband is out of town on business and its been raining so of course the wiper stopped working. Your video got me right through the whole process and back in business.
I am glad i could help.
Thanks so much for this video. I did exactly what you described in the video. I have did the same thing many times before but this Cavalier didn't like it very much and stripped out with very little effort on my part.
I cleaned out the metal from the splines. Use a file to dress the bottom mounting surface of the arm. And used a very light dab of semi-perm epoxy on the splines upon reinitialization of the arm. Bam! Better than new.
It worked!! 2011 Subaru Outback. And it only took me two minutes. Now I carry a socket wrench (14mm) in my car in case it happens again! Thank you from Missoula, Montana!!!
+Troy Leistiko Remember you can only do this a couple of times before the arm has to be replaced.
Thank you for your video, I found this helpful to make the adjustments I needed. This should be one of the top video's I had to search through tons of them just to find this one.
thank you very much for this video. fixed my wiper arm as per your instruction and it's working as good as new.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!! My driver's side wiper had frozen to the windshield on Xmas Eve and I thought I'd need to take it in to the shop. Watched your video over Xmas and tried this fix and it worked! Easy Peasy!! Wintertime in Alberta without working wipers was simply not acceptable. Thank you for sharing your time and expertise with us (and likely saving me a tonne of money!) 😘
This was a GREAT help. Did EXACTLY what you said and, VOILA..., wiper works.
Thanks so much.
ignore my question. I GOT IT FIXED!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO RICH!!! YOU DA MAN!!!!
Thanks, you saved me a ton of pain. This is exactly what happened to me.
Thank you, this worked and took me a total of 5 minutes. I used an old toothbrush to help clean out the aluminum clippings too.
This is exactly what I needed!!! Even looks like my saturn, same color!!! Thank you so much!!
Thanks a lot. Very easy, and directly addressed my problem exactly. Saved me a good deal of money. This is immensely appreciated, as I am unemployed.
Lets start with this.If you remove the arms do the part that the arm attached to move when you turn the wiper on.
Thanks for this video. I'm having to replace one of the arms on my car and I had no idea how to do it. Now I do. :)
Made my fix super fast! Which is helpful when it's -25c out. Thank you sir.
@incon1 Glad you got it fixed. The only downside is you can only do this a few times.
I tried this with our Dodge Spirit and it worked... thank you so much..saved money going to a mechanic
Worked like a charm! Thanks for saving me $150 since that is what I am guessing the auto repair shop would have charged me to fix this if I brought it in. Much simpler fix than I suspected it would be. Thank you!
What can happen is the splines tear away at the arm then tightening the nut does not hold it in place any more.If this happens it is best to replace the arm.
nice funeral music....do you have a recording of tye Dirge?
Thanks a lot man, i've had this problem with my 2001 Impala for years..
What you have to look at is if the part that go trough the arm is slipping or not.
Thank you! It was so easy and saved a lot of time and money.
Thanks very much! Saved me some money, and more importantly, made my day! Feels good to be able to fix something myself. Appreciate the video!
The ones i have worked on were the wipers did not what to park it was the motor.
Excellent video. Luckily I only needed that little maintenance. Worked for me and I saved time and money. Thanks!
I watched the video and you make it look so simple. I have removed the 13MM nut but cannot get the arm to come off. I have soaked it in penetrating oil and pryed on it all afternoon. Ideas?
You just saved me money sir..this worked like a charm!!! Thank you so much for this video :)
Thanks for the video! I did exactly what you did in your video and Bingo!! Keep making these fine videos.
Alex
I am going to try this tomorrow I hope it fixes my problem, my husband will be so proud of me :) Now I need to findout how to change a fuse for the heater...
@lexusfan100 Sure, you can adjust the arm by removing the nut that holds the arm on then reposition the arm were you want it then tighten the arm with the nut you took off.
Yup, this did it, thank you! And nice job with the closeup video :)
Are the wipers adjusted properly on the windshield.
Hi
Thank's for the SUPERB videos you produce! You are a real help!
May I suggest to put any thing smooth onto the windshield. From experience, if the arm strikes back into position without a blade on it it's 90% chance to chip or crack the windshield.
My question: I never remember which wiper arm goes on what side? the long one on the passenger right?
Thank's
Raymond
Very good suggestion which i should have stated because it is what i do with a piece of cardboard to protect the windshield.
richpin06a I was thinking the same thing watching the video about the windshield, thanks for posting this video I just did this last night during a snow storm in pittsburgh my driver side was froze to the windshield and i didnt see it till it was to late, it looks like an easy fix
Thanks, worked like a charm! saved me alot of grief!
Glad it worked for you.
Wow I actually fixed something , thank you for this I just fixed my passenger wiper from the vid and saved me money from a mechanic that probably would've charged me an hour lol
I love the age in which we live. Thanks to people uploading stuff they know to the internet, the rest of us can learn and fix stuff on our own.
Haven't fixed mine yet, but I think this is the issue... going to try it tomorrow.
Just now did the same!
Thank You I thought the problem would be way more complicated...lol THANX AGAIN!!
after i clean out all the aluminum from the bolt or whatever will the old wiper arrrmm work? or do i need to go buy brand new one?..thanks for the video
Thanks for the video. I have the same exact problem on what seems to be the same or close car (99 Saturn SL). I tried what you did in the video and the blade moved for about three or four wipes then stopped. Hopefully this means I'm on the right track since it moved at all but do you suppose it might be stripped in the inside as well?
Your instructions seem to have worked for me. About a week ago my wipers froze to the windshield of my 2007 Mazda3. I didn't realize it and turned on my wipers to remove what I thought was condensation. The passenger side arm started moving first, and then the driver side, so the two started crossing. I was very upset. I was able to grab the driver side arm to realign it, so to speak, and that stopped the crossing. But, thereafter, if there was any resistance on the driverside wiper arm, like from snow sliding off of my roof, it wouldn't move. Anyway, the driverside arm is moving properly following your fix, but I am not sure how to test that the spindle has bitten into the wiper arm properly, and I don't want to break it again. I guess I will just have to see how it does the next time some snow slides down my windshield.
For anyone considering this fix, I didn't need any more tools than what was used in the video. I pryed off the plastic cap with my pocket knife, pulled off the arm by rocking it and then with some leverage from a pair of pliers (it really didn't take much muscle), and cleaned the teeth with an Exacto knife. The whole thing didn't take longer than ten minutes, well short of what it would have taken for me to get cold and grouchy.
Fixed my mini Cooper wiper after ice froze it to the windshield and it quit working. Thanks!!!
I've used a dab of valve grinding compound to help reduce slipping, when the splines are worn.
I doubt that piece can be bought separately.
@binnsh That will give it good grip
Thanks for the video. That's the exact problem I have and your solution is perfect. ~
Rich, great video. I take it once you scrape out the aluminum out of the spine drive, the arm has to be replaced with a new one since it is likely stripped in the inside? Thanks.
I have found you can use the arm a few more times before it has to to be replaced.
They are not what is called parking. In a lot of cases the problem lies in the motor.
Likely not stripping of the aluminum. It is corrosion that builds up from the contact of dissimilar metals.
This worked for me, thanks for the video!
Thanks for posting, worked perfectly!
Thank you very much! This was very helpful.
mine only slightly doesn't work. it moves halfway up then goes back down
Worked wonderfully, thanks!
i have an 01 grand prix and the other day the wipers somehow got tangled together and the drivers side wiper got bent and now moves freely...do you think cleaning the spline like you did will work or is there worse damage?
@RareRapVideoz There is a very good chance you can reuse your old arm.
No that problem is somewhere in the wiper arm or blade.
Just saved me a bunch of $$$. Thanks for the video!
@Mattlarrivee I hear ya
You duh man!!! I was shitting wondering how I was going to get this fixed and kicking myself for not letting the ice melt and doing this to myself. Wondering can I get it fixed? Who to take it to (thinking I might have to take it to the dreaded Toyota dealership and pay an arm and a leg for part and labor because they would be the only one who could handle this? How far am I going to have to go? If I could find someone else, how much is it going to cost me (how much is someone going to gouge me)? Then I found your video, watched it a couple of times and followed closely and did what you said. In 10 minutes I fixed it myself. And, now I couldn't be happier. Thanks a lot. I hope someone returns the favor when you are in need.
Thank you for the kind words my friend.
this is my issue and just like u said this happen after cleaning snow/ice off my windshield ima go home and try this hope this is the issue
do u know if there is adjustment for arm for it to go alittle bit further. like when the arm is all the way to the end can i adjust it some way where it can move a bit more.
good tune in the background listenin to that myself
thank you so much for sharing our knowledge
Absolutely!! Peter Griffin. Great advice too. Mine is now fixed.
Thanks
unlike golfer1059, i WANT like to "glue" on the new arm (02 saturn sl). this is the 2nd time the spline has stripped out of the arm. the car side of things seems fine but the arms are getting harder to find. how about me adding a drop of loctite or some other "glue" to this connection? and if so, what type?
thanks for all your great vids!
(an even crazier idea- drilling a hole thru both the arm and mounting stud and tossing in a cotter pin, but i'm sure that is just stupid, right?)
can you tell me how to fix a wiper transmission? the nut came off the part that goes on the motor I've tried to re-align it several times and it always goes backwards! I just can't figure it out!
I have a wiper issue on my 99 Saturn SL 1. They come on all by themselves and wipe a few times and stop radomly on the windshield usually in the middle of your line of vision. This car is going to be my daughters and for safety reasons I would like to figure out if it is a short in the switch or a bad wiper motor. Any ideas???? Thanks for your time....
Hey Richpin, I took the cover off and looked to see what the problem was... Turns out the arm that connects to the passenger wiper has disconnected itself. I can't seem to snap it back over the little ball.. Do you know what that part is called or do I have to replace the entire transmission?
Hi there. My VW Passat was working fine. Was raining today. Turned on the wipers and and they worked fine - they have full range. Yet, when I stop them, they stop halfway up ... at about 35-40 degrees. Any suggestions?
