Jason Farnham No problem! I have just started playing piano a couple months ago and love it so far. Do you have sheet music I can get for this version of the song?
Austin R. Sorry I don't - that's an arrangement I kind of made up- other people have asked me for sheet music, it's something I know I need to do, hopefully one day when I have more time- thank you and good luck with playing!
Jason Farnham Thanks for a quick and detailed response. I don't want to take up anymore of your time, but do you, by chance, have a MIDI file? Have a great summer!
Austin R. Hi Austin! So sorry for the delay- I have a midi file for you! Can you send me an email at jfarnham2 (at) yahoo (dot) com with your email address? thanks
Very nice Jason. I like your up beat tempo. I think I played my cover to slow but I had not practiced it much before I recorded it so I proceeded rather cautiously from a lead sheet!
Do you still have the MIDI file?!?!? I'm dying to learn this and it the MIDI will make things so much easier. I don't read sheet music so a midi is like my last option :( let me know if you'll send it to me. :D
Jason Farnham: Who ARE all these music critic wannabes? They behave as if a musician of your caliber would read this comment section as clinic notes from an instructor. What egos. As if the rest of us readers give a hang about how they believe it should be played. When they all take the time to record and post on their own channel with their unsolicited suggestions and unwarranted ideas utilized in their recital, maybe they'll be taken seriously. It's so obvious these types don't understand musicianship and the nuances thereof. I feel better now. Thanks.

@@JasonFarnham I'm in! I'm a live performance music nerd. I was never in band in school, but all these years after, I still go to marching contests and UIL competitions. I was in orchestra in school, but was scared off by a tyrannical instructor. Not exactly J.K. Simmons' character,"Fletcher" from the film,"Whiplash", but to a young teenaged girl, he was a close enough equal in my mind. I stuck it out, but it didn't do my GPA any favors. Everything was going smoothly until our original instructor had a stroke and retired. Our hope that the new and alarmingly Draconian substitute was going to be temporary didn't come true. Dr. Cruel stayed on. I don't think it was totally because he was glad to be a member of the faculty. I used to wonder why he was involved since he seemed to dread and hate it so much. Shortly before I graduated, it was found out he was having an inappropriate relationship with another orchestra student. This was way back in 1980. (Yes, I'm ancient.) He was fired, but they resumed the relationship when she reached her 18th birthday a few weeks later. His wife sued for divorce and quickly moved out of the area. The student and the freshly fired teacher took a trip abroad together and returned to another state. I don't know why I thought you would have the time or interest in that story, but since it's already written and ready, I decided not to discard the effort. At any rate, I appreciate the invitation and the information to follow you and your undeniable talent via Spotify. Here's to success for your musicians quest, whatever you determine it to be!

Very nicely done until about the first minute point, and then you kinda lose your way. Too fast and too many variations in tempo, too many trills and flourishes. Ashokan Farewell is a lament, and should be played as such. You are obviously an excellent pianist, but sometimes less is more in music. The most beautiful piano arrangement and performance I've heard of this is by Peter Brown, also on a UA-cam video. Please take this as a suggestion, rather than a put-down, from someone who truly loves this beautiful waltz, and has since the first time I heard it in the early 1980s. Me ke aloha... 🌴🌴
Farnham appears to be the same age as the hundreds of thousands of youth who died in the defense of the Declaration of Independence and its ideal of human equality. Nothing to "lament" here.
@@jakebarnes7266 Well... if you knew the first thing about this beautiful lament (and it IS a "lament") and waltz, then you would know that "Ashokan Farewell" has absolutely Zero to do with the American Civil War, other than that Ken Burns was granted permission by Jay to use it as recurring theme music in his PBS "Civil War" miniseries. It was, in fact, composed in September '82, when Burns was just starting in the TV business, by Jay over one weekend just after he and his wife Molly Mason had finished another summer of tutoring and concerts at the annual summer Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camp in upstate New York, which they also had started and ran, and was feeling melancholy that it was over for the year. That's OK, though. You have lots of company, since it seems that half the people on this planet seem to think that this beautiful waltz was an actual Civil War song played by either the Union or Confederate soldiers, or has something to do with that war, thanks to it's inclusion into an album of actual Civil War songs that came out just after the TV series. Stories like that seem to take a Long time to peter out.

Don't laugh, but the Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis could play this, and be reverent and respectful, with only a few jazzy endings.
