This was made for a collaborative Secret of Mana album from OC Remix called "Resonance of the Pure Land". Here's a link: mana.ocremix.org/ I did two tracks for the album (this one and "The Still of the Night").
There is something very enchanting about Kakkara Desert! Like many video game deserts, it takes inspiration from real life deserts all over the world. But somehow, this one managed to feel like a real, self-consistent place to me, rather than a pastiche of stereotypical "desert" things! I tried to do that with this arrangement also! I used VSTs from world instruments originating in Central America, the Middle East, Asia, the Mediterranean and Africa to create a hot and (mostly) dry sounding ensemble. The juxtaposed wetness of the celesta and marimba represents the heroes as they make their way through the desert. Their hopes, determination and struggle. The shimmering rattles of the rainsticks and tambourines are meant to be like sands and dried up plants caught in the wind. I also tried to include the sparkling opal stars in the mix. ^^

I love what you have done with this piece including instruments from cultures around the world that are in and or around deserts is a very nice touch and adds a lush and vibrant soundscape to this song which should represent a lifeless zone but in game is anything but, this is certainly in improvement to the original and a great remix that I appreciate

You're both creative with music and writing, you have a very nice way to describe your tracks and add some artistic details about them

Lost in the desert? The desert in Secret of Mana was designed to be appear more complex than it really was. Both the southern desert map (stranded) and northern desert map (connected) were palette juggle and screen transition tricks that were actually pretty limited and limiting virtual space. My first time playing the desert was bleak but not overwhelming.

Funny you should mention that. I remember going back to that desert and being surprised by how small it seemed!

I'll add there was Dancing Mad, this is a major master track that deserves to stay exposed for more time than other ones :)
Rebecca is working very hard each year to give great music to hear :)

    Nice!
Though one thing I have to citique, if you let wind instruments like the flute play constantly it doesnt (despite the sounds are ofc samples) sound realistic.
If you put pauses after phrases (for example after 0:52 and 1:02 again), where the player would breath, it makes it sound more realistic :D

Also nice. Coincidentally, rainsticks reminds me of when I was young and lived in the desert, so at least personally, nice instrument choice.

Thanks! They remind me of the desert as well, though I haven't actually been to a desert other than Osoyoos... but that doesn't really count, haha! Where did you live? There's a kind of magic in desert environments. It's really well captured in games like SoM, but also FF9, Skyward Sword and Crystal Chronicles.

A bit late on the reply, but
Mojave. Nice place, though with global temperatures as they are, maybe a bit extreme to go living in... Still, the wind and general sound of the desert, are usually fairly well compared in those sorts of 'dry' instruments.

Your slower music is way too slow for me... This is much more pleasant for me.
