For Canadians, there is only one choice, Kobo. Amazon has chosen to cripple Canadian Kindles in two ways. First, Bluetooth has been disabled on Canadian Kindles. Therefore, Audible or other Audio books are not available for Canadian Kindles. If that were not upsetting enough, Libby is also not supported on Canadian Kindles. I have both a Kobo and Kindle and find myself using the Kobo Clara far more.

Just want to put this out there that if you call Amazon and ask they may remove the ads for you at not cost. I called and asked per a comment I saw on another video and they did for me. But you do have to ask out right and say you were told it could be done for free. The first thing they will say is that it costs $20. But in my case they did remove the ads at no cost.

I favour the Kobo. I have a Kindle but I want easy access to library books and I don't buy e-books. I mostly use my Kindle for classic works long out of copyright. So much for the Kindle's advantage. I'm not crazy about the personal data that Amazon collects. I also want to DL fave newspapers, web pages, and magazines for an easy, portable read.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I actually much prefer browsing the library and checking out books on my phone or iPad then "sending" it to my Kindle. This is because navigating on eink is significantly slower on Kindle (and from what I can tell from reviews, most e-readers) and would be annoying to browse. I usually even do that when finding Kindle books to read too.

The ghosting issue, I wonder if Kindles page turn animation helps alleviate that. It's sort of like having refresh set to every page turn, but without the annoying flashing. Just a guess. If that's what they did, it is very smart.

~ 8:00 - I think that book availability is _the_ most important criterion for selecting among many otherwise pretty similar devices. I definitively deep into amazon "ecosystem", but one should also weight Kobo's better integration with public libraries.
Also note that Amazon is discontinuing book lending (to other Kindle account) capability - not that it was particularly useful, because it was once only, for 14 days, and most publishers opted out if it, anyway. (BTW, reselling e-books is not a technical problem - Amazon holds patents on that - but big publishers don't want to even consider it.)

Nice presentation, and it is so nice to see an American discuss the whole Amazon library xenophobia. As from many of the comments, there are many who are frustrated by the restrictions imposed by Amazon, whether Bluetooth barring, library blocking, or advertising on screen. I have not read all the comments, but there is also your licence to read on a Kindle. Amazon reserves the right to block or even brick your device if you knowingly or unknowingly 'break' its rules. Your Amazon books are not your own. They are on permanent loans, and Amazon will monitor what you do on your device with their book and those you put on their device. I like that there are more devices coming into the marketplace with Google Play. This will really shake things up

I would love to own a Kobo Clare 2R but it's not available where I live. If I try shipping, it'll cost my almost twice the price. I wish Kobo had a branch in Nepal. Onyx Booxs where on my radar but are too fragile and too expensive even if it runs on Android, their latest model is one I would have bought if it had more storage space (only a measly 7 gig free even tho they sell it as a 16 !) and all the other readers don't play well with the Kindle bookstore. I'm thinking of delving into indy writers and I don't believe any of the competition is just going to provide what I'm looking for.
