Thanks again for reviewing my watch Jody and interesting to see the comments already 😀 There's something about this (and other Ming designs) that really just appeal to me, I think it's the fact it's unique and has an almost futuristic "Tron" kinda vibe. From first wanting one to then actually buying it was over 15 months so I certainly wasn't buying it based on hype or scarcity. Overpriced? Probably, but I'm still very happy to own it.
I've damaged a few expensive items on nights out with friends, glad it's not just me! I'm not going to wear my g shock when hitting the town in Edinburgh, think this should be a new criteria for an evening watch. Love the buhaus vibe with the touch of modern if this watch, getting a bit of Bulova Accutron from it.
I got the 17.09 burgundy and it looks so much better in person than in videos/photos. Also the independent hour has actually been super helpful for me...not for travelling but setting the time is so much faster...just set the minutes and you're pretty.much done. No alignment issues anymore either after ming delayed the release and fixed it
Judge Jody 🤣🤣 I love the look of these. I can see why they were so popular. I do remember the big kerfuffle with the movement. Fun to look at but I couldn't justify that price personally. I'll just continue to admire them from afar. Congrats Gary, it's a stunner!
Pass. Clearly with Ming you either get it or you don’t. I don’t. Each to their own but I think with a 3k (market price) budget you’ve got be able to find something a little more meaningful as a wristwatch surely? The case and lug design means any level of wear will surely mean a minimalist watch that should look clean instead has scratches and dinks - as is already the case. The Ali express crowd should be able to replicate this as a homage for less than $200. Nice review Mr M.
I totally agree, two grand lol I'd rather get a Tudor, just add a couple of hundred to the two grand and hey presto you've got a serious watch ,any Tudor is got to be better than that fugly thing lol
to me, an old bird watch ethusiast in Singapore, ming watches are indeed overhyped and overpriced.... the design is nothing really that spectacular or unique. probably they just managed to get the interests of high end watch circle collectors and personalities to speak for them in earlier years. selling their "uniqueness" of them being a small, ethnic chinese run , malaysia-singapore based brand.
Ming should make a HAQ watch. Considering they are all about the 2 handers, casing a super accurate high end quartz movement into one of their beautifully designed watches seems like a no brainer.
You nailed your observation that it grows on you. I was initially underwhelmed upon buying as my "special" watch. But after putting on a nato and using as an everyday its brilliant. The longer you spend with it the more you appreciate the design. Theres been very little in horology aesthetic innovativation that honours the past while looking forward: you either get another heritage design or homage or something too brash. In time I suspect this will be viewed as a design milestone.
After owning many dozens of mechanical watches I don’t find it so special anymore, especially knowing it’s something achievable with movements worth next to nothing. I almost find refreshing, every now and again, the sense of precision coming from the ticking seconds hand on quartz watches, go figure. If we talk spring drive or very high beat movements it’s another story, that’s actually special.
I have one of these! I bought it direct from Ming as a milestone birthday gift to myself. I was captivated when I first saw the pictures online and decided to go for it. It’s easily the most expensive watch in my collection (by a pretty wide margin) but I just love it! I love that two-piece dial, and the sense of depth the indices on the underside of the sapphire give it. I love the way it wears and how it kind of feels classic (the size, the guilloche pattern on the dial) mixed with modern (it does have a bit of a Tron vibe when it glows). And I love, as you say Jody, how it won’t be mistaken for anything else…and if you’re a total watch nerd (and maybe only then) will you recognize it! I get it’s not for everyone (which might even be part of the appeal), but for me, it’s one of the prides of my collection. Thanks for yet another great video!
I love what Ming is doing. $2-3k is a LOT to pay and, after the initial hype, the 17.09's seem to be dropping in value. The problem for me is opportunity cost. For not much more, you can dive into really interesting vintage and neo-vintage stuff like Heuer Autavias, Sinn Navitimers and such. Not to mention a whole raft of Tudors, Nomos,' Cartiers and so forth. So this might be a catch and release; enjoy for awhile just to experience a Ming. Maybe that's the route I'll take.
A great review. Nice to see a watch a little out of the ordinary. The watch face reminds me of a neon clock I saw in a diner - MANY years ago. So the nostalgia factor works in the watch's favor. I rather like this but it is beyond what I can justify spending. If I *could* justify the outlay - yes, I would wear this in the rotation. Happily. Again Jody - well done!
In my case, this watch design grew on me throughout the video. However, I don´t think I would ever want one at even a fifth of that price. I have a watch without a seconds hand--an Alpina quartz GMT. For quite a while, the lack of a second hand bothered me but I could not quite figure why. Now, I think it is because I use the movement of a second hand to almost subconsciously reassure myself that the watch is running. Doesn´t bother me anymore.
I have one 2 hand and a Bambino with the small second. I absolutely love the bambino. It’s pretty elegant on a leather strap and kinda sporty on a mesh bracelet. As soon as the crystal gets scratched I’m changing the crystal to sapphire.
Once I see a watch being sold above retail by the scalpers i always move on, I think the business model is to restrict supply on purpose a' la rolex and create a sense of " please ming sell me one of your watches " . Paying 50% up front is also a definite no no for me , for that kind of cash the list of fine, obtainable timepieces is huge.
I've got a one-handed watch recently and I absolutely agree with your point about a second hand (I mean, lack thereof). The lack of a minute hand on mine makes it even more of a weekend watch that you can wear when you don't need (or don't want) to know what time it is precisely. Thanks for the video, Jody, cheers from Russia!
I have a one hander as well and agree. You can easily tell the time within a few minutes at a glance seemingly easier than a two hander once you get used to it.
@@whiteglovewatches9908 right, it takes some time to get used to, but not too long :) one-handers are underrated imo Do you have a Meistersinger? Just curious
Some interesting design points, marking the inside of the crystal, large easily visible hands, minimalist styling, but also some huge design fails; the crown is not screw down, the case is too thick, only 100m water resistance and rather poor case finishing in that it is easily scratched. Worth perhaps £200 on a good day with the wind behind it.
An opinion divider for sure. While noting the entry in the 'Wrist watch annual', and after seeing other reviews I find that in this case that as far as I'm concerned, Dionne Warwick's heartfelt sentiments to 'walk on by' finds common ground with myself.
I’ll stick to HMT classics if I want a similar look, style and size. Great colors, decent movement, and $30 or so - happy wrist and wallet. If I have reduced myself to wrist adornment to impress people, I have more problems than blowing $?,000 on a watch.
I do like the dial and overall design- a real conversation starter for people like us. Being a value-oriented watch nerd who loves microbrands, I'm going to continue to wait for my turn to come up on the Helm list and hope San Martin watches Jody's videos.

Very informative video, not for the majority I spose, however it did look very good and comfortable in the wrist shots which surprised me. Also I think it woulld be a conversation starter that would get you a lot of comments when wearing from any company you may be in.
Not that I don't like the watch but I am NOT in the habit of giving out interest-free business loans. Ming has been asking customers to put down a 50% non-refundable deposit more than a year in advance of delivery of the watch. And the majority of them are far more expensive than this. If Ming is so mismanaged that they need some or all of the money so far in advance to make their watches, forget it. I don't trust the company and I _really_ don't like the business model.
guess the brand is trying to target the "exclusive" high end watch collectors ....to me, an old bird watch ethusiast in Singapore, ming watches are indeed overhyped and overpriced.... the design is nothing really that spectacular or unique. probably they just managed to get the interests of high end watch circle collectors and personalities to speak for them in earlier years. selling their "uniqueness" of them being a small, ethnic chinese run , malaysia-singapore based brand.
As you said "you either like them or you don't." I kind of like it, but I always take a step back when the crowd charge and would never pay over retail. My other problem is that my rule is, 'I don't buy watches with Roman numerals and I don't like watches with anything on the crystal.' As you say, 'on the limit price wise,' but not over priced, but so much more out there for the money. Great review as always.
Looks like a movado. Also, I don’t see the advantage of a mechanical without a sweeping seconds hand. Might as well have it be quartz and have the minutes stay on track for much longer. Would cut down costs a lot!
Judge Jody lol I love their designs, very unique in every aspect. I think unless you're buying the big names in the industry, design is above everything else
I don't know what it is, because I normally I prefer watches with a running second. But I like it! It could be a wear for certain situations, when I can be more relaxed about the passing of time.
Perfect holiday watch, with that independent hour hand and with no minute markers you can more of less tell the time. Reminds me of a lot of vintage watches that just had a mark for the hours. I'd want more for that money but if you like it, why not?
Looks nice, and the Ming brand is pretty good nowadays; however... objectively on this watch I do not see anything that *couldn't* be replicated equally by e.g. san martin or suchlike. The caseback is dead simple; the case is pretty simply finished; the bezel is pure polished; the dial is just stamped and painted brass.. Replicating this with a basic sellita sw200 for well under 500 is completely doable. And honestly if I was in charge of Seagull or san martin, I'd absolutely push out a model of two with this case and approximate dial.
That intro Jody 👏👏 The real question is: "Are they Ming-ing?" 😜 I personally really like the design. I love the clean, minimalistic, yet bold look. There's some nice subtle little design touches too. All that being said... I do think that they are a little overpriced still though. But evidently they hold their value and then some though. So, I guess that's not so much of an issue.
Jody, you're a nutta! Bloody hilarious start to the video. Great review, love the watch and design, however not the shenanigans to get one. I am a Ming fan, just not of how he plays the sales game, oh well, one day maybe!
Thanks Gary from Birmingham for loaning your Ming to judge Jody! I was born in Brum 👍. I enjoyed the video Jody but not for me I’m afraid. I am a little sceptical about micro brands and certainly wouldn’t spend that sort of money from one. Each to their own though. Cheers from Melbourne.
Judge Jody, somewhere 9 months ago i bought a Technomarine Cruise Shark. And i must say for €109,- i paid for it it's real value for money, and no hype at all!
I really like it. Love the dial, the lumed print under the crystal is awesome. I quite like the lug turn out, it's quirky. The GMT hour shift is excellent. Not Guilty Ma Ludd
Really good looking watch, and I'm into the shape of the lugs! Very unique. I don't have two pennies to rub together unfortunately, so I'll admire it from afar with a Skmei on my wrist haha. Love Judge Jody!
Funny this week I turned down their LW.01 (Incredible record watch but 20k and no lume) but I got down for the GMT, I love the lugs and I am super excited to get it.
To be fair, the Casioak is also a two handed. Maybe that’s a silly point, the seconds are displayed digitally. But when you read it in an analog way that is what you see
Well it is a watch. But this would have to be an acquired taste for me. I think it might be the starkness of the white lines, or maybe the inelegance(is that a word) of that starkness. It might be the kind of watch that strikes you differently in the flesh as well, but I'm not betting on that either. Outside of the script, love the dial design... but not the hands. Cuddos Ming for doing things different, but I'd slap a quartz GS or aqua terra on there quicker.
I think they're fantastic, the Micro Moser, they've had some PR snafus sure, the ladies model was a particularly egregious piece of fuggery but as for the function issues thats what garantees are for. Strong original, functional minimal design, theres very little like them except for Isotope who have a simalarly original, but cruicially, functional, fresh look.
For me, no go. Glad this review was done, because I have been confounded at the values of this watch, but understand some people love it, to each his own. I wouldn't own it if it were $100. Just not my tastes. Good review. Again.
I like their design, but just a bit too small for my 7.75 inch wrist. I have no issue with releases being 'first in best dressed'. I stay up late and buy my Zelos watches that way..... and.... it's all part of it, and kinda fun! Despite being cool and slick looking, all these Ming watches have started to look all very same-ish. Good luck to anyone who manages to pick one up. They do look cool. But, yeah, I prefer the variety and better value that Zelos offers. Even with a similar mad scramble to try and buy a piece online when they are released.
I think i'll rather wait for aliexpress folks, they would definitely find a way to make a proper homage of this watch, or even upgrade it as in some cases with other mainstream brands.
Your macro shots had me wearing and looking at my Vario Empire Tuxedo. I think the guilloche on my Vario is just as good as the Ming. Strangely, the rest of the dimensions match as well (38mm x 44mm LtL). The deeper into the hobby I go, the less I want a Ming. The style is definitely there, and the quality is great, from what I've heard/read. Honestly, the real reason I don't think I want one anymore is that I just don't think the style fits mine. It would just be a safe queen in my collection and that's not why I buy watches.
Despite the unusual design it does not look like you are getting much for your money and it does not look like it will hold up well if worn often. Maybe worth a few hundred dollars at most.
I did buy a brand new 17.09 Ming as I genuinely wanted to support a local brand. As much as I tried to like it, the watch felt like a one pony trick with its dial and didn't let brand value proposition compared to its price. Bought myself a Tudor Heritage and am far happier with it.
Genuinely surprised with this one. I feel like the design grew on me through the span of the video. The lume is spectacular. The design overall is interesting and unique which I appreciate. I feel like I've seen some similar in vibe watches for much cheaper though (I think Marloe Coniston has some similarities)
I like a 3 hander, a lovely white second hand would of made this watch for me. the price puts me off to be honest, but I'm from the north east and have a frugal mentality. but I would rather buy a second hand Omega with that king of money. regards keep up the good work.
Judge, Jody and executioner 👨🏻⚖️ 😂 What a great unique looking watch! It’s not really to my usual taste and way out of my price range even at retail for what would be a very occasional wear but I really admire how unapologetically Ming this watch is! Those hands and that dial are really special and in a world of very “safe” designs you’ve got to admire a company going all in on their own thing. Awesome video as always Jody and big thanks to Gary for lending in another watch for us all to gawk at 👀
Sounds like a pretty fair assessment of this piece. Personally I find extremely attractive, yet unusual, things I like in a watch. If I had it, I would pay this price for it but agree that that is unreasonable. Thanks for a good review Jamie.
I'd agree with the lugs comment, but i could live with those, but for me it's too small, and I definitely couldn't live with a 2 hander. I also totally agree about doing non LE models. The watch industry seems to exist on LE models.
I am ok with 2 hand watches; weekends are for Panerai... This piece is nice enough at MSRP to consider if the dimensions work for you (that strap isn't getting round my 8.5" wrist) but at market price, I am sure I can find something more appealing. Then again, I squarely fall into the camp of those who don't get the micro brand hype...
I really love the design of most MIngs but I woud prefer a seconds hand. I'll most likely try to get one eventually. I got watches on my list ahead of this.

And honestly if I was in charge of Seagull or san martin, I'd absolutely push out a model of two with this case and approximate dial.
Sea gull are original design watches, you mean one of the companies that use their movement? If so I agree
That intro had me dying lol. Ever considered moonshining as Judge Judy's doppelganger?
That intro Jody 👏👏
The real question is: "Are they Ming-ing?" 😜
I personally really like the design.
Yay, my weekend dose of JOMW 😁😁😁 Cuppa tea, relaxed, warm & snuggled under the duvet. Weekend complete 😇😇🙏🙏
Thanks Jodi! What's on your wrist today mate?
@@JustOneMoreWatch Casio G-Shock origin re-release. Blue with gold aftermarket bullbars, buckle & strap keeper. What you rocking today?
Thank you Jody for being the most enjoyable watch judge on UA-cam! Even when the watch is sus, your content never is! 👍
I really like it. Love the dial, the lumed print under the crystal is awesome. I quite like the lug turn out, it's quirky. The GMT hour shift is excellent. Not Guilty Ma Ludd
wow cool watch, another great video! you should do a video of the top 10 micro brands
Jody Law and Order: 10/10 would watch! Wearing my beater work watch - a classic g-shock square. My change for a weekend watch a bit later tho! 🙏
Really handsome an unique watch! It is so difficult to make something so different in esthetics nowadays.
Really good looking watch, and I'm into the shape of the lugs! Very unique. I don't have two pennies to rub together unfortunately, so I'll admire it from afar with a Skmei on my wrist haha. Love Judge Jody!
Haha... the lume shot is so strange. 😂 Not my kinda watch, but interesting. Thanks Jody!
Hah, Bumfight ordering system.
But when you read it in an analog way that is what you see
I don't think Jody knows what "the fifth" is but I appreciate the skit and excellent special effects.
Not just about telling time, but it is about an attitude towards time itself. Grand observation Jody.
That’s what puts me off about Zelos I feel that way about that brand but to each their own
Well it is a watch.
The ”ladies” model was Kurono Tokyo, not Ming.
@@mattiass5969 You know I think you're right😳
It was quite nice....
Scarcity sells. People want what they can't get. (ie, limited editions) Goodbye Judge Judy, Hello Judge Jody
Hour hand adjustments aren't all that uncommon (GMT movements, in particular have the feature), so I'm not sure why they'd do it the hard way here.
Especially as the base movement is a GMT movement. ;) Clever engineering for a problem that I don’t believe needed to exist.
I was quite shocked to find quite a few of these for sale on ebay 😳
love to see your honesty
Your macro shots had me wearing and looking at my Vario Empire Tuxedo. I think the guilloche on my Vario is just as good as the Ming. Strangely, the rest of the dimensions match as well (38mm x 44mm LtL). The deeper into the hobby I go, the less I want a Ming. The style is definitely there, and the quality is great, from what I've heard/read. Honestly, the real reason I don't think I want one anymore is that I just don't think the style fits mine. It would just be a safe queen in my collection and that's not why I buy watches.
Facts
Despite the unusual design it does not look like you are getting much for your money and it does not look like it will hold up well if worn often. Maybe worth a few hundred dollars at most.
I like it, but only if I could get one for
Yes, wearable if you need a tight cockring with a timer. Tiny for an adult wrist.
Great intro! 😂 How do you come up with these things, Jody?
I brought my first TUDOR BLACK BAY S&G in Birmingham yesterday 👍
The minute hand seems a bit short, methinks.
A beautiful watch, with a very good size. Is it perfect for me? Yes. Could I buy it for that price ? Not a chance.
Great intro🔥
I like a 3 hander, a lovely white second hand would of made this watch for me. the price puts me off to be honest, but I'm from the north east and have a frugal mentality. but I would rather buy a second hand Omega with that king of money. regards keep up the good work.
Judge, Jody and executioner 👨🏻⚖️ 😂
What a great unique looking watch!
Just based on the past models that you scrolled through, this seems to be one of their best offerings. I rather like it.
The utility of the hacking seconds without having a second hand or minutes indexes...
I'd agree with the lugs comment, but i could live with those, but for me it's too small, and I definitely couldn't live with a 2 hander. I also totally agree about doing non LE models. The watch industry seems to exist on LE models.
Now that's an image i won't forget in a hurry "Judge Jody" lmao, well played Sir.
Very cool looking dial.
The 37.05 moon phase is gorgeous but if I were to get one I'd go for the diver on the bracelet.
I really love the design of most MIngs but I woud prefer a seconds hand. I'll most likely try to get one eventually. I got watches on my list ahead of this.
At seems like the hands are aligned, that's a great sign
If a Judge Jody episode aired ever time a Judge Judy episode aired, the world would be a better place! Keep up the good work bud.

Yeah the lug turnout reminds me of the New York Yankees logo
love the intro!!!
It seems like quartz would have been perfect and cut down the cost significantly
Great intro!
Nice design, I will wait for the PD Flash ;)
This will not be an uncommon comment, I love everything about it, expect the big price tag. Could this fit on the Pagani Design photocopier perhaps?
"Judge Jody" - I love it :D
The hour and minute hand are almost there same size. Not easy to differentiate the two
Great video. Very clever.
