- A 60-day state of emergency is taking place in Ecuador after a convicted gang leader vanished from his prison cell.
Adolfo Macías Villamar, better known as "Fito", is the leader of Los Choneros, a powerful gang which is thought to have been behind some of the deadly prison riots in recent months.
He was being held in the maximum security wing of a jail in Guayaquil.
The emergency measures include the suspension of the right of assembly and a nightly curfew.

These were the children of 2008 when former president Correa gave them the table of drug consumption, in a country with a high rate of illiteracy and poverty. Today they are adolescents and young people, today Ecuador sees the legacy of the bad political decisions of former Correa. Giggles notwithstanding, there are only two ways to "escape" from a "secured prison": you do it the way El Chapo used to do it --- by tunneling your way out of it, beneath your cell (with assistance digging from outside of the prison walls, too, of course).... OR
You bribe the police/guards, so when there's "chaos" --- which you easily could orchestrate, if you have that many comrades within the same prison ---- they (the police/guards) pretend not to see it, not to know "everything that was going on, due to the chaos"... and you slip out using a "laundry mat" carrier cart like shown in most movies. Movies don't drop from the sky, out of the blue; they are made BASED on well documented schemes used in real life...
Even bribed police officials don't let you out casually in a 3-piece suit. They would only help IF you have enough power to create chaos to allow them to look the other way, when you flee...

My old coworker is Ecuadorian as well well as the women who helped raise me from birth while my parents were at work and she provided care to me, my sister and hospice to my extremely old grandmother while my parents worked. My heart goes out to all ecuadorians who are unfortunately trapped in the violence. The stories they've told me of the absolute horrors they escaped and hardships of reality in a narco state really give a sense of reality to what is happening now. Hope that those fleeing the violence are able to make it north and seek asylum, and find a better life up here. The border crisis is fucked and we need to improve the process, but first we need to allow these men women and children safety from such a horrible situation

The Scottish Government is a mess but they've a long way to go to catch up with Latin America. Corruption is a national sport in most LatAm countries.
I remember when UA-camrs would recommend moving to Ecuador because it was so "safe".
Up until 3 or 4 years ago it actually was pretty safe.
I was just thinking the same I just saw some last year talking about how "safe" and "free" they are in Ecuador.
It depends where in Ecuador. There are cities more dangerous than others but agreed not the best time now.

When I was in prison I would have had to leave through at least a dozen sets of doors and/or bars, many of them unable to be locked and unlocked without the preceeding sets closed and locked behind them and half a dozen guards at each one point. Then there's passing through the main doors and out the gate. Wasn't remotely possible.
South American prisons are effectively free-for-all psuedo-anarcho capitalist society where anything goes as long as you stay within the bars. There's a couple of Vice and Reason documentaries that show how they're open-air prisons.

In Venezuela I graduated from a very prestigious high school back in the 80s. Today the director of the school is a woman who used to be a teacher back in the day. She is not the elegant director we used to have, she is a damn chimpanzee from the slums She is a toilet cleaner, that ape has never traveled, I have spoken to her and she is a nice person but she can not distinguish between a smartphone and a rock. Imagine the values she is generated, and that was one of the best schools, the rest of the schools back in the day were useless already. And that was in Venezuela back in the day when we had oil and democracy. The rest of the other countries is where our maids used to come from. You would have a better time and communication dealing with a pig than with these people. They are farm animals. I think the most sub-species, the most sub-humans in all Latin America are the Mexicans.

Better system? We in the UK buy our drugs from Latin America while our governments continue their utterly failed War on Drugs. If that war ended, we could have a proper, legal market in recreational drugs, properly regulated. Instead, there's rampant violent crime.
