I live in west Charlotte. I relocated here in January from the DC metro area. I like it alot. I bought a home, nice community, walkable with lots of sidewalks, walking trails, close to airport, uptown, Rock Hill, and Indian Land. They have a few wineries with live music outside the city, several lakes, folks are friendly, and good entertainment. The cost of living is expensive in relation to salaries, I am noticing the city is growing by leaps and bounds, which tells me lots of folks are moving here from higher cost areas and running up the prices of homes. Its also a nice green city. I am a GenX black woman.
At this point in my life I'm realizing that if it ain't the Northeast Corridor or Chicago, then it's a no-go. Boston, NYC, Philly, Baltimore, DC, and Chicago are literally the bare minimum.
Aye! I’m born and raised in Rock Hill too. It’s bad here, haha. This small city wants to be a suburb of Charlotte is so bad. The cost of living here is ridiculous. They keep building car washes, storage buildings, and unaffordable “luxury” apartments.
Thanks for the tips on Charlotte. I had planned to move there in 2024 but reconsidering due to the cost of living and housing market. It looked appealing in 2021 but not today 😔 I moved from Chicago to Nola in 2021. I love Nola except for the super hot summers, food desert situation, pot holes, and public transportation. I love the culture, museums, festivals, landscape, slow pace, cost of living although it’s rising, and access to Creole/Cajun cuisine. I’m considering moving back to Chicago to purchase a home. I would love to purchase one in Nola but the storms, hurricanes, and fraudulent insurance companies changed my mind.
Your perspective is so fascinating. CLT is my hometown, and I've lived here since 2003, so kindergarten. The NEW Charlotte is so overpriced and so gentrified, and as a local, I tend to have the most fun in the local hangouts...which are strictly gatekept!
I relo'd to CLT in 2013 for a job and only lasted 7 months before resigning and moving back to my former city. My entire time there I felt like I had stepped back in time. I agree that a city must offer a "premium" to justify the COL. I'm in NOVA and I love it. I can't think of another place in the US I'd want to live. If I get another relo itch, it may have to be international.
Same, I’m going to give Austin, San Antonio, *coughs* and Houston a chance before I rid myself of Texas. I’m just gonna rent my house in Dallas and call it a day. (From Miami Fl, moved to Dallas from San Diego) - yes I will be going back to San Diego
I used to live in Charlotte and I also attended UNCC. My mom and her side of the family are from/ live there and it has changed dramatically. If you're looking for trails and parks, try Reedy Creek Park. It's not far from UNCC's campus and has tons of trails, some are like hiking trails, but it's nice and has tons of shade and is nice around this time of year. Also Hornets Nest Park off of Beatties Ford Rd. has some nice trails too.
Congrats on your PhD program!🎉 Random: You have an amazing portfolio to be a recipient of research, arts, humanities, or even communications grants and fellowships. Wishing you all the best.
You can also get a fellowship at UChicago or UIC and you will get Chicago experience (preferably during the spring & summer). NU is the larger grant institution but it's in the suburbs
I just moved to the Charlotte area, but in Indian Trail in Union county. It’s nice, but public transportation is nonexistent, roads get smaller when driving in from Charlotte (with the exception of US 74) and there’s not much to do. But it’s quiet, it’s beautiful and the people here seem generally nice and welcoming to me as a person from NY. It hasn’t been easy finding work though and I notice the pay is paltry. But coming from NY it’s kind of hard for me anyways… not many places pay as much. And to have any form of entertainment means a 30 minute drive into Charlotte. And I HATE that there’s no sidewalks! But I’m here so I’ll hopefully grow to love it.
Went to JWU in Charlotte 2010-2013. It was so much cheaper. All you needed was a job paying $15 an hour or 2 jobs paying minimum wage and it was enough to pay rent (which was around $500 for a 1 bedroom $600-$700 for 2 bedroom and $1k or more if you wanted to be in a luxury apartment) and anything else you needed comfortably. I was able to purchase a 1500 square foot home 15 minutes outside uptown for $265k, but then again I do live off beauties ford rd…
Wow I was interested in moving to NC at one point and after watching I am glad I didn’t. It still sounds like a beautiful place though, I just wish it was more affordable fr.
My family is from the Carolina’s and I heard North Carolina is the “New York city’ of the 2 😂 based on the family members that live, lived and moved down there the Carolina’s arent for young people or for people that are from major cities in America. In my personal experience mixed with family and friends experience my conclusion/perception of the Carolina’s especially South Carolina is mainly for people that are old and people that like to be away from people (experiences based on 1930-2023, 70% of experience is from people in that are currently in their 30s and 40s)
I'm older and lived North all of my life until I moved to Texas 12 years ago. Only visited North once since then and it looked cramped and dirty. I bought a home in South Dallas County and have no desire to live outside of the state. I make a great living, the music scene is always live, and the people are friendly. But, we do have enough folks because the traffic is horrific.
I'm a New Yorker, all my life. I am considering relocation after retirement. I realize, however, that I'm too New York-spoiled. If Charlotte is that car-centric, then it's a no, for me, although I'll see for myself. I love Philly with its diversity, food, culture, and housing affordability (rising, though), despite the city's crime issues. Love DC, but it's too expensive, and the crime is going back up! Love Atlanta, because everything is Black-owned (especially the brunches). But getting too overcrowded and very little public transportation. Love New Orleans to visit but not to live. Love Chicago for its transportation, food, downtown, and deep house music scene. But can I deal with the crime, winters, and city's politics?
Awe. I think this will be the one video people arent going to be upset with you for talking about their hometown. Im in Tampa and from 2016-2020 the cost of living, culture, politics etc was perfect but the pandemic just seemed to stall or put a hard stop on it all. I dont know if the pandemmy is to blame solely but pay has slowed, utilities and housing like super expensive, but surprisingly food still pretty low. Ive been in community with people outside hillsborough county the last few years, pasco, polk, hernando and pinellas have been more welcoming and constant.
I'm from NC. And yes the triangle gets the most funding. Always has always will. WNC is hanging on by festivals and fall scenery. It's sad but the white people with money are there. That's not going to change. I've never known Charlotte to offer much. Like there's Carowinds and the Concord Mill Mall.

I grew up in Rock Hill and it kills me watching the cost of living for this area go up with minimal growth.

I am definitely interested in living in Chicago in the future. Would love to know your thoughts.
I moved here from DC during the pandemic .Found two large Asian grocery or international stores. You raised good points.
I'm in TX and clawing to get out. I'm in medical & NC was on my list but let's see.
Clawing? It’s that bad?! 😮

Just so happen to have decided to wear my OG Smart Brown Girls sweatshirt today, and here you go with an upload!

The house I lived in off of Beatties Ford sold for $550k last year 😭

I’m from NYC so this perception may only be valid for people from NYC, Newark and LA

That was so true about going out to eat it's horrible how high it starts out now :(

What about the cancer cluster near Lake Norman from the coal ash?
When is Jouelzy coming to Atlanta ? 😩

I've never known Charlotte to offer much. Like there's Carowinds and the Concord Mill Mall.
I was solicited twice for prostitution activities uptown while minding my business with friends so I stopped going uptown.
Charlotte is def lacking in education and the triangle & triad areas.
I live in the triangle and hate that it is also not walkable.
