I had to laugh when Dawn screamed hysterically after getting blasted by water from the pipes. Giles has a lot of mystic knowledge as a Watcher. He knew the forces involved with a resurrection spell were extremely risky, so calling Willow a "rank amateur" was both cutting and accurate.

People really need to stop leaning on the “it’s the grown-up” season when they defend season 6. It makes both the season and the criticisms towards the season come off more basic than they are.

    • @interstellarprobe4930
      @interstellarprobe4930 Рік тому +11

@John Johnson, I've seen a lot of the criticism for this season. And I don't get how describing it as the "grown up" season frames them any differently. What is really disturbing to me is the fact that the writers were supposed to draw from personal experience, so every criticism I've read is potentially criticism of an actual person's real life.
So, I get it. The season makes me deeply uncomfortable at times. But, calling it the "grown-up" season does not seem like a problem to me. The fact that it was written by humans seems like the bigger problem. This stuff happens. As uncomfortable and depressing as it may be, it actually happens. Not the demons and supernatural stuff. But, a lot of the other stuff describes real issues people face.

Willow has basically spent her entire life being special, but in ways that most people don't appreciate as much as perhaps they should. Describing how she brought Buffy back in that simplistic, joking kind of way, just shows that she is so pleased with her accomplishment that she hasn't even considered the danger that was involved. And she's really looking hard for that 'round of applause'.

Honeslty I think Anya was dead right in S5 when she said Xander was only proposing because he thought they were all going to die and he wouldn't have to go through with it. He didn't lie when he said she was wrong about his motivation. In the moment, he really did mean it, but on a subconscious level, he really didn't believe they'd survive Glory. So now that his subconscious has been proven wrong, he needs to get the ego and the id back in line with one another, adjusting to a new worldview. It's easy to say "We're all going to die, but in case we don't, I'm going to marry this girl." It's a whole different animal to actually survive the impossible odds and realize "Oh, there *is* a future."

Adding a bit to the "Season 6 is about adulthood" conversation: Once you get out of school and are out in 'the real world,' there is a tendency to look back at childhood as having been wonderful and idyllic. Of course, it wasn't (ESPECIALLY not for Buffy!), but that's what "I was in heaven" is a metaphor for. In the last episode, there is a moment where Buffy looks at a picture of her mother and says "I miss Giles." That's a feeling you can get when being a grown-up overwhelms you: You wish Mom and Dad were there to take care of things, and you.

My generous fanon is that Willow & Tara do pay rent and contribute to household expenses but it's not enough to cover all of the mortgage (slightly above average, it's a smaller town but still SoCal) plus property taxes (likely below average to entice people to move there) plus home insurance (above average b/c Sunnydale). In any case, there's just not enough saved for large emergency expenses like a piping retrofit.
The house's finances have been run by basically three teenagers in a trenchcoat and Willow's absolutely the type to confidently assert that she's got everything under control right up until the house get reposessed by the bank.

Willow went downhill from here, for me. I always thought that the real reason she brought Buffy back wasn't because she was worried that her friend was stuck in hell or whatever, but to prove anyone and herself that she was a powerful witch.
She thought she could do anything with magic and that it'll fix all her problems in life, and that's actually the problem with her, because she never draw the line. Like, do you remember when she opened a dark magic book at the Magic Shop back in Season 5, because Glory "ate" Tara's brain, then went to her house to "kill" her ? Yeah, this gives you an insight into Willow's logic. Even using dark magic was fine with her, as long as she could play with it, as if it was "normal" 😒

They choose them as young as possible for a reason. They’re always at the age of not being able to make fully informed adult decisions and always having to be dependent on parents or guardians. They choose children especially. They choose females specifically . And it’s because they know they can have the most power and control over them. They’re young, impressionable, and dependent on authority figures much older, wiser and hold all the power. So it’s completely obvious why they don’t pay their Slayers. So they can’t pay their way out of their “destiny” to beat the “enemy”.

But Willow's response ('maybe it's not such a good idea to piss me off"), or, more accurately, the tone of voice Alyson summons to say it, is off-the charts frightening.
Yet again, we have Buffy and Spike quietly sitting side-by-side, her confiding, him sympathizing. It's replacing the Buffy/Giles scenes that used to end so many episodes.

The show is making a simple point, that being a superhero doesn’t make you immune to the reality of life, like needing a job. Willow isn’t “lying to herself.” 😂 She really does believe that Buffy was in hell. They all did. And it’s based on what they all experienced.

Maybe she does believe it but I don’t think she cares all that much about that specifically. What she cares about is what she can do about it. What she can take control over. And it’s probably her biggest trait in both the negatives and the positives.
      “How can I fix this?”
Not really taking into account whether she should.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Flooded’. May contain spoilers.
Moving on from the whole event of Buffy’s resurrection, ‘Flooded’ has our hero becoming aware of and having to deal with the overwhelming problems that have occurred in the Summers household since her death. Namely money problems. Turns out that she’s almost broke and down in the basement the plumbing system is all out of whack and as soon as she gets down there to sort it with her own two hands - the pipes break and water bursts out everywhere, thoroughly flooding the basement. I interpret this as a metaphor for not knowing her own strength, similar to when she was driving a car with the parking break on in ‘Band Candy’. And in not knowing her own strength - inevitably breaks something she was trying to fix. It is an effective metaphor for the episode and season - there’s just some problems a Slayer can’t resolve. The every day, mundane, adult problems of living life… unless they force themselves to confront them.
While all that’s going on with Buffy, Giles returns and sees his recently resurrected Slayer with his own two eyes. I don’t think he quite believed it until then. Until he was able to directly see her for himself. And with all that Buffy tells him (as well as all that she doesn’t, of which he picks up on most), he is seriously worried. This concern for her culminates in the kitchen where he finds Willow and asks her to explain what happened when she performed the spell that resurrected Buffy. The scene we get between them is the most memorable part of the whole episode and, as far as I’m concerned, one of the most memorable scenes in the whole show. We have never really seen Willow and Giles argue thus far. I mean… there’s been times when Giles has warned Willow about using magic and has explained that were she to, to do so responsibly and take it very seriously. But Willow has never been brave or bold enough to argue back at Giles. Not until now. Not until this conversation.
Willow is so proud of herself for what she has achieved in successfully bringing Buffy back to life that her pride makes her arrogant and entitled. Not only does she believe that she’s in the right for what she’s done… but she is absolutely adamant that she should be praised for it too. The fact Giles isn’t impressed by her actions throws her for a loop. Because she thought he would be. Hence her excitement in him asking her about performing the spell. She feels no shame whatsoever and has no hesitancy in explaining just how dark and dangerous it was to perform. As if she completely forgot that Giles is well… Giles. The oldest Scooby member. The retired librarian she once considered her mentor and her his protégée. The man she used to have a crush on. And the teacher who always reminded her to be careful and responsible in dealing with the mystical and supernatural forces.
Willow is so consumed and in over-her-head with her magical power that she is completely oblivious to how other people feel about her constant use of it. She proceeds to defend herself from Giles and threatens him. In her mind, he no longer has the power to tell her what to do or how to think. With her growing power, her belief is that the student has surpassed the teacher… so the teacher is no longer relevant or needed. Which is in stark contrast to the way Buffy regards Giles going forward in the season. He is so relevant and needed to her because she can’t face up to life’s trials and tribulations. So long as he is around to be the adult, she doesn’t have to be. This means she can wallow in her deepening depression at being forcibly pulled out of heaven by Willow and ignore everything else going on in her unwanted experience.
The bleak and dark themes of depression and addiction are starting to become known to us as the audience. In order to tolerate watching Season 6, you have to be willing to acknowledge the most honest and real thing of all about living the human experience. It’s not a TV show. So it will not always look or feel good from an observer’s perspective on it. I know all the complaints fans have with Season 6. Most of all the complaint that it doesn’t look or feel like ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’. But I want to reiterate the metaphor of ‘flooding the basement’. It’s not meant to look or feel like Buffy. That’s the point. You’re meant to be overwhelmed by the bleakness and the darkness episode to episode. I understand that it’s difficult to watch. But if you can’t face the difficulty in merely only watching Season 6 happen… how will you ever be able to deal with the difficulty of your own? This season forces you to learn lessons. And whereas you might have the belief that TV art/entertainment shouldn’t do that because you’re supposed to be entertained by it, I am very grateful that I can learn from it as hard as it is to watch it. I for one appreciate Season 6 so much for being honest and real and raw to the point where Buffy does not look or feel like Buffy. Again, that’s the artistic point!

I think Buffy and Spike make a better couple, even now. Spike gives Buffy his whole focus and he uses his ability to cut through the BS and see inside people to see what's bothering Buffy. He shows up when she needs him but he isn't cramming himself everywhere in her life. Willow and Tara helping with bills and what not has been discussed in the BTVS fan community till it is blue in the face. One thing everyone has to remember is that we don't actually see their entire lives. Each episode only shows us the highlights and takes place in only a few days, it is rare we see five days in a row during an episode let alone an entire week. This was more obvious during the early seasons (where every scene took place during a school day and very rarely were any scenes on a Saturday or Sunday) than it is in later seasons. We just do not know at all whether or not if Willow and Tara were helping with food or what not during the days the episodes did not happen. They very well could have been helping out. I personally think with all the money Willow and Tara were saving on dorm fees (room and board) for college by not living in the dorms that they were very likely using that money to help out.
On the Watcher's Council not paying the Slayer. Think back to the Season 3 Episode Helpless and the Season 5 Episode Checkpoint. To the Watcher's Council, the Slayer is expendable, a tool, a weapon, nothing more. Travers said that much in both of those episodes. Sadly the Watcher's Council, at least as long as Travers is the head of it, will never pay the Slayer because they don't see them as anything but a fire and done weapon.
On Giles giving part of his money to Buffy. That I can agree with. Especially when he is co-owner with Anya of the Magic Box and was being paid to be the librarian at Sunnydale High in seasons 1 through 3. He had extra money between the Watcher's Council and his everyday jobs. He could have helped her out.

While true we don't see what happens 24x7 one would imagine that they putting in money would have been brought up during the discussion but the only thing they mentioned was that Joyce had left money that now had dried up. It's been a common theme since the start that the scoobies expect Buffy to solve every problem, I mean it's one of the reasons why they brought her back to life this very season, it was not just that they missed her.

@@Henrik_Holst You are right of course. But here is something to think about. When did the money dry up exactly. Was it in that episode or before? That's not mentioned other than saying it was gone. So for argument sake lets say it dried up during the summer? Where were they getting money for food, electricity and what not during that time? Yes it should have been mentioned but Willow and Tara had to be paying something at the very least while Buffy was dead.

    • @Henrik_Holst

@@BrennaUrbangirl Depends of course on just how much Joyce left behind, how much of the supposed hospital bills that where covered by insurance and so forth. Which of course is completely impossible for us to know.
Food I guess they pay for themselves, but that is an expense that I put down in the selfish corner. It just strikes me quite odd that they just hand over "you have unpaid bills" till Buffy and not throwing in a "we have managed to pay some of them with our own money, helping out as much as we could", I meant that is what normal people would do.
Then this is a tv-show so what normal people would do and what writers think of characters would do is of course different things so what we have left with is this 20 year old debate as you mentioned yourself :-)
My main reason for doubting that they did help out financially is that they have always expected Buffy to be the one to fix everything, I mean the main reason they decided to resurrect her was not that they missed her emotionally or to help her get out of a potential hell dimension, it was so that she could fix a problem for them (no Slayer in Sunnydale). Add to that how angry they where with her in S3x02 for "forcing" them to do "her work".
edit: sorry, I didn't realize that I had already made the last point in my first reply. So wasn't my intention to nag about that!

I don't know if the Council pays other slayers, but with Buffy there's an issue of control, if she becomes their employee she'd have to do what they say. At the least they should've paid her as a teenager, even if it was in a trust fund. With Willow, I think she always wanted approval.
But the comparison to Angel is also an issue the show brought up. The Council pay for work that people won't do otherwise. Buffy's slayerness is a calling, so she would slay even if the council wasn't paying her. They just need to hire a watcher to manage her. It mirrors the patriarchal setup we see in the real world of single moms, where they have to choose between losing control over their calling or having to provide for themselves. Angel gets to start a business and charge money, for so many reasons that would require much deeper analysis.
