If you are using thicker strings with tuning down to low C , I highly suggest this pickup or thornbucker . It balance out the low frequency of such tuning, making the distortion more clear, less fuzzy with well defined attack. Better than relying on OD , because it sounds more natural and does not bring the noise floor higher.

I've been using DiMarzio D'Activator pickups for a long time now and I couldn't be happier, so I'm not surprised they have brought these out. If you're a hard rocker or metal head I strongly suggest giving the a go, they also clean up nicely when rolling back the volume.

DiMarzio is my favorite pickup company. I own lots of DiMarzio pickups and have never had any complaints. My favorite at the moment is the DiMarzio FRED that I took out of my JS and put into my Ibanez V(VBT700).
This is a great sounding pickup. I was expecting something that has a hot output and scooped mids. I'm surprised at how versatile and more rock voiced it is. Thanks for the great video Phil. Cheers
Very interesting . As you started the video and describing the pick up came to my mind Pete Thorn’s ones, witch are my favorite pick ups. Thanx for this review, will give those Dimarzio’s a try and maybe they can become my precious
I am thinking of these for my 2013 Traditional. Did you have the 57's in there previously? How would these compare? I have hot pickups in most of my other guitars so want to have something a little more PAFish in the Traditional.
@@leftygtrplr6184 it came with a BB1 & 2. they were just really shrill and left me wanting more. I was hesitant to swap them out but the fortitudes were a huge upgrade. I have medium and high output pickups and these are some of the best. the traditional just growls! go for it.
Hey Phil one question, have you tried the PAF 36th anniversary from DiMarzio? It's usually paired with the Fortitude but using the PAF for the neck position Do you like having 2 fortitudes or 1 fortitude and 1 PAF. Which would you say it's more versatile?
I would have liked to hear the pickups swapped. The metal cover tends to darken the sound. The covered neck pickup sounds a bit too dark and the uncovered one at the bridge could use some warming up in that position.
I just got a Charvel Duplantier with this pickup. I admit I got it because playing such heavy music on a T-style is so cool to me. I didn't do much research on the specific pups (I know DiMarzio is good, but that's it) so it's cool to see such a positive review. Also it makes perfect sense - let the amp do the dirty work and let the pup articulate. Now to somehow get the skill to make the tones come out...
Hi Phil, great review! After your review of the Alegree PAF style PUs I was quite impressed and ordered a paar for my Joe Duplantier telly. Unfortunately - due to some covid/brexit complications - they still haven't arrived yet. But now I'm really blown away by the versatility of these DiMarzios. Unfortunately they're hard to get and quite expensive here in germany. But the tones you got out of them really convinced me, that they're worth the extra money. I'd love to see a comparison to the standard DiMarzio PAFs to hear the actual tonal differencees to the Fortitudes.
Those pickups were very dark. If your pots were 500k, then those pickups were too dark for my taste. BUT, I love the innovation. I love that Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan keep trying new things. Anyway, I'm in love with the SD P-Rails at the moment. I have both the standard, Alnico 5 model and the Alnico 8 model, both installed with the triple shot mounting rings so I can switch them into any mode. The 8 is absolutely off the wall. I don't get the PAF lovers. What? Are you gonna get some sound that the 200,000 before you didn't get?
I just picked up my first set of Dimarzios - an IGNO for the bridge and a custom color Titan for the neck with no cover (black bobbins/gold poles to match), and the ordering process was extremely easy. Really excited to give them a listen - so far, I would definitely order from them again.
Hey Phillip! You gave me the best example of a split coil system.. thank you for all your info all the time man, I'm a metal guy, so I always want to hear everything with heavy distortion and you do that. I appreciate you man. I have an idea for a shootout if you're interested. The Ibanez Infinity's against the Fortitude. All double coils. (Unless you want to do the single coils too that'd be awesome.) I want the comparison between the two. Best regards, Jordan
The neck sustain and "singing" quality is reminiscent of my PAF 36th Anniversary I have in the neck of my LP, although this pickup has more bass. Maybe it's a good match to have a Fortitude in the bridge and a PAF 36th in the neck, as you mentioned. But, I also liked it split in the neck, very good single coil sound for blues, bright and dynamic but not thin!
I only have Dimarzios in my guitars... a super distortion was the first mod I ever made...it sounded so good I just stuck with dimarzio...don’t laugh, but I have never played a JB... I’d like to!!
Phil! I’d love to hear you review, and get your thoughts on, the PRS Dragon II pickups! I’ve been using them for years and there’s nothing really on the market quit like them. They are AlnIco 4 magnet, and wound right smack in between vintage and high output style. I have found players are polarized on them, they either love or hate them. What are your thoughts?
I like them especially in clean what you displayed but I’m just lil concerned with that they could be tubby with gain what I could hear. What I mean tubby is that lowend or low mid frequency.
Thanks Phil!! That was very interesting, and cool!! I like lower o/p pups, like the PRS 85/15 LT that we can't buy. I have been using SM Parsons Street Vintage LT's. For me, DiMarzio PAF's have been bad MOJO. Back in 1974, my guitar tech put a DiMarzio PAF in my ES325 that had mini-HB's in it. He had to route the neck hole quite a bit. That caused the neck to twist after a month, and I lost the guitar!! NOT DiMarzio's fault at all! Just bad JU-JU. 8( Can't wait to try these, they sound great!! JMHO --gary
Phillip, I love your reviews, they're great but I wish when demoing something like pickups, you could also do them with a just clean amp with say an mxr or similar distortion pedal. I'm on a strict low income and I can't afford amps like the engl and Friedman. I've got a little peavy rage that I only use the clean channel with an mxr super badass distortion and a boss sd 1,so I don't think these would sound as great as the amps your playing them through. Hate to ask stuff like using lower end amps, but I just can't afford high end stuff anymore.
I've got an RG570 with evolution bridge/neck, and an RG550 with super distortion bridge/neck. Both have an injector (neck) in the middle position. Either combo will get you where you want to go.
I think the song Hold ON from the new Gojira album really showcases in isolated parts what it does under high gain. It's different it gives the EVH amp gain a very throaty voice.
So you put the Fortitude bridge pickup in both positions? Also, how do you select custom split colors on the Dimarzio website? I wanted to order this is red/white but saw now way to get that….
Love your videos! I agree about using it in both positions. Just a great sounding pickup in that guitar. I got an old beat up peavy Patriot that I am restoring. It has EMG Select pickups in it and haven't hard it yet. So Im researching to see what would sound good in a guitar like that. It interestingly has a 2 piece neck and the body is made of several pieces of wood glued together. I don't know what kind of wood but I read possibly Alder. From what I've heard on line the original PUs sounded strange to me. So Id like to put something that would just sound good, like this video, although it is a Strat style and not a tell style. Anyhoo. Thanks for the info.
@Phil - Does anyone make a Humbucker with coil splitting such that one of the split sides can also function as a "dummy coil" to hum cancel the other split side while maintaining its "single coil" sound/tone?
Not sure that would be possible as the cancellation occurs from the coils picking up the EM interference. Due to the two coils being wrapped in the reverse directions, the interference cancels. A dummy coil would have the same coil as the other side but minus the magnets so no signal is induced in the coil by the strings. Unless you had some mechanism to remove the magnets from the pickup or have 3 coils and a switch to alternate between the coil with magnets and coil without you wouldn't get the hum cancelling when split
Sounds like a Series to Parallel switch. So far I find in Series to Parallel the neck sounds like outer coils & bridge sounds like an inner coil. Generally it's a hum canceling sounding single coil sound. Series is standard humbucker wiring.
I really dig Dimarzio sound plus all the variations they offer for any taste and at no cheap but reasonable price. I hope they do not got the boutique route.
I put a Dimarzio Notorious and Super Distortion T in the Neck and Bridge of my MIM tele and it is the best sounding tele ever. I also recently put a Dimarzio Titan in a modded metal telecaster and that is also fucking amazing. Dimarzio just makes dope shit.
I bought this and I hate the way it saturates my gain tones 🤮 I've realized I MUCH prefer a ceramic magnet in my bridge humbuckers. These are like playing metal through vintage Jensen Alnico speakers... like bees 🐝 in a tin can.
thats basically what seymour himself did in the 60s, decided to wind his own pups instead of buy replacements of course 60 years later and theres lots of marketing but that same sentiment still exists
just pointing out. You 'restrike the note' during the 'infinate sustain' part.... let the note degenerate into feedback , the compression handles the attack characteristics.
Interesting regarding the sustain, means it can't be magnetic pull that affects other guitars with A5 magnets. Do the windings affect the magnetism/magnetic pull? I have one guitar with a genuine schaller floyd and SD tb4 and sh2n pups. Poplar body and maple neck and it surprisingly has really decent sustain with dirt at least. I'll need to test it clean now though lol.
I’ve had the fortitude pickups in my signature Joe charvel. With the volume turned up it’s real boomy and bassy. If your turn down the volume then it sounds microphonic. I’m wondering if I got a bad set.
I have never liked high output pickups and I’ve been saying you don’t have to have all that output to get drive with all the boost and drive pedals that sound great for a while. I actually use humbuckers that are 7.2k-7.6k range because they’re exceptionally clear and have great note separation. I tend to like the A2 neck and A4 bridge to help even out the mid scoop in low wind pickups.
Happy birthday, Phil! I wanted to put Thornbuckers on my Meteora HH but now i'm not so sure! Could you compare side by side the Fortitude (there's only one, right) with the Thornbuckers? Great channel, great content, super helpful. Best from Barcelona

Those PAFs have rounded vintage corners; pre-70s Gibson style. Great rhythm p/u! Full, not wolfy
So you put the Fortitude bridge pickup in both positions?
Also, how do you select custom split colors on the Dimarzio website? I wanted to order this is red/white but saw now way to get that….
They sound great! as always thanks for the review bro 🎸🎸👍
Dude, what IS that guitar? Man, swap out pups just like that????? Oh my!!
Somnium guitars out of Florida
@@rayschurr9337 Thanks Ray
Much better split than most humbuckers.
Great pickups and great playing phil
I actually haven’t really tried their pickups. I need too ! Thanks Phil
How does this pick up compare to the Tone zone?
Might be cool in the neck with a Norton or FRED in the bridge.
Dimarzio will also do lefty strat pickups if you ask which is awesome.
Maybe its youtube, but it think the do sound pretty full but also very dull. Im missing the crunch in the treble and the definition in the notes.
What witchcraft is that at 4:16??
I really dig Dimarzio sound plus all the variations they offer for any taste and at no cheap but reasonable price. I hope they do not got the boutique route.
That engl is the star of every video it’s in
I put a Dimarzio Notorious and Super Distortion T in the Neck and Bridge of my MIM tele and it is the best sounding tele ever. I also recently put a Dimarzio Titan in a modded metal telecaster and that is also fucking amazing. Dimarzio just makes dope shit.
I know that I said this in your last video that I need that guitar, but nothings changed, I still need that guitar. I know it’s only been an hour 🤓
Nice pickups. Like the choice of demo amps.
I bought this and I hate the way it saturates my gain tones 🤮 I've realized I MUCH prefer a ceramic magnet in my bridge humbuckers. These are like playing metal through vintage Jensen Alnico speakers... like bees 🐝 in a tin can.
ive started making my own pick ups and have come to the conclusion that most popular manufacturers like seymour duncan are total rip off..
thats basically what seymour himself did in the 60s, decided to wind his own pups instead of buy replacements
of course 60 years later and theres lots of marketing but that same sentiment still exists
Happy birthday dude!!! 😁🇬🇧
I’m desperate to own one of those somnium guitars but im not Richard Branson and can’t afford one 😞🤮
just pointing out. You 'restrike the note' during the 'infinate sustain' part.... let the note degenerate into feedback , the compression handles the attack characteristics.
not a critique, love your videos Phillip, big fan . Just a suggestion
Epiphone WildKat. Why Epiphone make it sound dark. A mistake or a genius idea? Could you make a video about it?
I love my Epi Alnico Classic Pros
Sound fn awesome. My Gibson 490s are freaking outstanding tho!
Phil, would this be a good humbucker for and HSS set up in a strat?
Happy birthday 🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🎊💐🎉🎉🎉💐💐
Another great review. Thanks!
