Saw death over 40 times in my life. Amazing band. Lived in Tampa for a while in the 80s. Lot of good bands and made some amazing friends. Chuck was unique and fit into no molds. He was such a nice guy. So funny and very engaging . Never had a bad experience at his shows or having a beer back stage. I grew up with him. in a literal sense. He was a year and a half older than me. So as he grew, amazingly so did I.
    I miss him,
    A LOT.

@@coryg7051 Indeed. So much of my experience with music was around that time. The feeling of having someone say what you think, in music, and make your life more complete is a great thing. The music will always be there. Still hurts every year. Especially around Christmas. But it will live long after we are all gone.

Wonderful. There's a reason Chuck Schuldiner, the lead guitarist and vocalist for Death, is considered the godfather of death metal. It's one of the few bands who have a virtually perfect discography. Here's some of my favorites from their albums to give you a good idea of what they do: Pull the Plug, Zombie Ritual, Symbolic, The Perennial Quest, The Philosopher, and Spirit Crusher. If you want an amazing instrumental, Voice of the Soul. Chuck really speaks through his guitar in that one.

Death was the first death metal band I got into back in the day (1990-ish). Mainly because it was the first death metal band. I tolerated it because it is so melodic and progressive at the same time. My favorite Death album is Spiritual Healing from 1990 (iromically). Every song on it has something you could grab and hold onto. Spiritual Healing is the blue cover art album with the evangelical preacher on it.

Cryptopsy came around in the early 90’s. During that time death metal was being more experimented with and was getting “heavier.” Other examples would be bands like Suffocation or Gorguts. Bands of this sort were influential to what is now known as brutal death metal.
Good ear for being able to tell the differences in a band like Cryptopsy compared to Death.
My recommendation would be Cattle Decapitation- Kingdom of Tyrants
It’s absolutely extreme, but their use of melody is beautiful. This mans vocal range is nuts, he can scream with melodic overtones and it’s disgustingly beautiful. Even if you don’t end up reacting to it, check it out

I got in to death metal at a young age when it was exploding in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I will credit death metal for opening my mind and ear up to amazing musicianship from any genre. Lesprosy by Death is brutal!!!! Here’s some hx. The Godfather of Death Metal!! Charles Michael "Chuck" Schuldiner (May 13, 1967 - December 13, 2001) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He founded the band Death in 1983 and was their lead vocalist until his death in 2001. His obituary in the January 5, 2002 issue of UK's Kerrang! magazine said that "Chuck Schuldiner was one of the most significant figures in the history of metal."[1] Schuldiner was ranked No. 10 in Joel McIver's book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists in 2009 and No. 20 in March 2004 Guitar World's "The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists".[2] Schuldiner founded the publishing company Mutilation Music in 1987, affiliated with performance rights organization BMI. Schuldiner died in 2001 after a two-year battle with glioma.

He wanted to transcend the stereotypical "death metal" and be more "progressive" as it were. As you have just heard, Chuck wrote songs that stimulate the mind with higher thinking and grander themes. Intricate rhythms, timing, dissonance, and superb musicianship was Chucks calling card. Excellent start to your progressive death metal rabbit hole. I'd still recommend the Death song "Symbolic" as I think it's their best song... But I also think a really cool idea would be to go back to their first album (and essentially the pioneering death metal album) "Scream Bloody Gore" from 1987. Every song on that album is pretty much based off of a horror movie, so it's perfect for Halloween. The coolest song from that album IMHO is "Evil Dead" and they have an excellent fan-made music video showing clips from the 1981 Evil Dead movie: ua-cam.com/video/IEYCcW0nh4c/v-deo.html

Check out "Ghost of Perdition", "The Grand Conjuration", "Blackwater Park", "Heir Apparent", "Godhead's Lament", "Forest of October" just for a few to start with. It is very complex musically, but more melodic than standard death metal, with occasional sections of clean singing. Might be more accessible, from a certain POV, than straight death metal. Very moody, dark, creepy.

The lyrics to me are referring to the ambition and the true feelings of the heart and the trials people go through in life saying “be prepared”

The first time I heard Death was when I was looking through the metal section at a CD store, saw Death - Human. Asked to have a listen to it. Instant love! That was around '98 I reckon.
I would say my favourite track would be Lack of Comprehension and also the instrumental track Comic Sea.
Depends how extreme you want to get as to what level of death metal.
These are the songs I would listen to get a feel, lower you go, the heavier it gets (and I love it heavy with pig squealing vocals)
    Obituary - Chopped in half
Bolt Thrower - No Guts, No Glory
    Morgoth - PIts of Utumno
    Massacre - From Beyond
    **Starting to get heavier**
Immolation - No Jesus, No beast
Deicide - Slave to the Cross
Cannibal Corpse - Gallery of Suicide
Incantation - Apocalyptic Destroyer of Angels
Nile - Ramses Bringer of War
Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face (classic and also featured in Ace Ventura - Pet Detective)
    **Next level stuff**
Prostitute Disfigurement - Left in Grisly Fashion
Human Rejection - Proceed to Terminal Isolate
Putrid Pile - Drenched in Gasoline
Awaiting the Autopsy - Backyard Autopsy (female vocalist)
    Guttural Slug - Hacksaw Surgery
    If you have read this this far, thanks and enjoy the death metal journey =}

Love your reactions man. Hey for another Death video, you may want to check out a live performance called
"Death - Crystal Mountain - Live in Eindhoven 1998" Other suggestions for you, check out the band Venom. Songs, "Black Metal", or "Buried Alive/Raise the Dead" One other suggestion is Celtic Frost "Circle of the Tyrants"

(T)erbassinator! Richard Christy, is a beast on drums on that album. Theres 2 more bands that orginated right down the road from Death...Obituary..The End Complete track off The End Complete album.....Morbid Angel, either Eyes to See or Where the Slime Live, off the Domination, album. Both of these albums are more of a groove death.

Chuck could create extremely technical music that was also very melodic and accessible. That's hard to do, but he was a true talent both as a technical guitar player and as a composer.

I would like to suggest you Archspire... Very technical, brutal, but with the type of class that you can find in oldschool death. Also, check some death-doom bands, like Asphyx, Tiamat, Paradise Lost, Hooded Menace...

Death were a great band, RIP Chuck. A few requests, as always Soilwork. You should do maybe 2 or 3 of them as their style has changed very much over the years. But here's a few great ones.
    Soilwork:
    Nerve
    Death in General
Father and Son Watching the World go Down
    The Living Infinite
    Follow the Hollow
    Let This River Flow
I could go in for day about them. In Flames songs My Sweet Shadow, Bullet Ride and Pinball Map are all great too.

Finally! Good approach to go back to the roots of death metal... and sure death are the godfathers... BUT ;) starting as a very punk sounding extreme thrash band, call it death metal, with their debut scream bloody gore, they developed over 7 records to a very progressive death Band... miles away from average death metal. And this is from their final album where they pushed progression to the max... not nearly root death metal.
But still the greatest extreme metal band ever!!!!
Listen to the drums, the bass chucks riffing...
this is the highest level of death metal
Going back to the roots means early death, morbid angel - chapel of ghouls, entombed anything from clandestine, obituary - chopoed in half, suffocation, dismember, deicide, carcass... stuff like that.
I was damn bored by that other song you did... for me death metal became absolutely boring except for some old Bands... and for sure mighty death who always where a big challenge on the musical technical side... just out of this world
Nice one though... maybe i could help;) now right on

It's awesome that you're taking an interest in death metal. Good shit. Yes, Death was one of the founding fathers of the death metal genre. But this particular song is from Death's final album. The band was barely playing death metal at this stage. The music here is really very melodic and preoccupied with being "progressive." Death helped pioneer the death metal genre, but that was in the '80s. This song is from 1998.
Maybe check out some songs from the following Death albums...
    "Scream Bloody Gore"
    "Leprosy"
    "Human"

There is Death Metal and there is Deathcore, also allot of Death metal bands try to out brutalize each other or shock if you will. It's a different animal when entering the realm of Death Metal(core)

To really go back in the history of deathmetal a good starting point would be the band Possessed and their album "Seven Churches".
Death is great too, even though i'm not too much into deathmetal, especially american deathmetal.
