The reason wels catfish grow damn big in Chernobyl cooling ponds is the lack of human presence. Without anyone actively trying to hunt them and also a good and undisturbed ecosystem, they can grow larger than what people usually expect. Im sick and tired of people saying that the radioactive pond causes them to mutate and grow huge. It isnt the case. It just really angers me since its a pretty straightforward answer.

The animals in Chernobyl have a higher rate of mutations than otherwise, but these mutations are small patches of discoloration (tiny white spots). Mutations like extreme deformities were recorded in stillborn wildlife immediately after Chernobyl exploded. These animals did not reproduce obviously.

But stingrays are adorable goobers. Barracuda are cool too. Gar do look like a prehistoric murder beast, but they're super docile unless you're trying to catch one. Hell, perch are more dangerous, because they could slash tendons with their spines. Gar would, at worst, cut you with their scales a bit and leave some painful ( but easily treated) puncture wounds.

Attacking shiny things isn't even special to barracudas if that is what they're basing its classification as "dangerous" lmao. Not even unique to fish in general. SO MANY animals are drawn to shiny things and will target you for it (even if just because they wanna take it).
And I STG, the fear mongering of stingrays and the death of Steve Irwin is so damn disrespectful, even without him literally using his last moments to say not to do so. Besides, I've literally pet and fed stingrays that were pretty much just aquatic dogs lmao. They'd literally brush against my hand of their own accord even when I wasn't paying attention and actively petting because they just liked the attention so much. Far from "naturally aggressive" lmao.

About shark fearmongering, can confirm sharks are actually pretty chill. A nurse shark swam like within 3 feet of me at the beach one time, or at least that’s what I think it was. It was sharklike, it has shark sorta scales/fins, but it had more catfish-like proportions and it was like 4 or 5 feet or so, so I think that’s what it was. Anyway, the thing didn’t attack me or even acknowledge my existence. Guy was just kinda vibing. Not gonna lie, though, bolted toward the beach the moment I saw the thing lol. Didn’t quite know that they were chill yet.
A second nurse confrontation, though, happened in the fl keys on a snorkeling trip. Thing was majestic! It was about 10 or so feet below me so it’s hard to tell the size but it seemed fairly large. Cool shit’s out there.

Lots of the time animals are named after mythical creatures because people tend to think of a really weird creature, then go exploring and find something similar and name the new animal after the cryptid. For example, the Okapi was a myth before it was actually discovered, same with leopards and lions (for example, lions are on the UK coat of arms yet there obviously aren't any lions in the British Isles. They were a mythical creature that represented strength, similar to a dragon, then it turned out they were actually real)

Reason most people are 'scared' of gar is they are often in bodies of water that are fairly small for their size. Mostly due to being able to breath atmospheric oxygen, they end up in dried river beds and small pools left behind after rains and flooding. Finding a 4-6ft fish with inch long teeth in what amounts to a kiddie pool would put a shock into anybody not expecting it.

The TV presenter Jeremy Wade literally hung out with Piranas in a pool and was fine. My dad did stand on and get stung by a stingway and although it hurt really bad he was given a bucket of soapy hot water to soak his leg in and was fine, we were in a national park so got first aid by the park ranger and didnt have to go to the hosptial/a doctor. Of course if you get stung multiple times or near your heart you're going to want to get to a hospital but it is not a huge danger, far far more ppl drown than die from a sting ray.

a quick story-I grew up in the South Pacific, and spend a good chunk of my time in the water. Dive regularly, have swum with large sharks, dolphins and various large marine organisms. the other day I was diving at the Poor Knights reserve(a spot called the "Northern Arc", if anyone is interested). there is this fascinating geological formation, its this "crack" in the cliff face that looks to be about a meter wide above the surface, but opens to about 10 meters wide underwater. a massive school of short-tail stingrays (maybe 50?) had gathered in the archway, stacked in layers. there is powerful wave action through the gap, which I was not prepared for, and I was thrown right into the middle of the pack (im pretty sure I ran into some of them). My BCD was a loose fit, so I was struggling around (not a little panicked), and they (the stingrays) just circled out of the way.
excellent dive by the way-all the photos I found online dont do i justice. give it a go if you are in the vicinity.

There have been cases of bites according to River Monsters, but those were (I think) in self defense in shallow waters where big fish are less comfortable. They do have very sharp teeth, but as long as you don’t put your hand all the way in their mouth when unhooking them, you’re fine. My mother pushed me off a platform when i was sitting at the maldives and said i saw a stingray (i was 7) and so she thought to push me off into the water without any warning and me wearing my normal clothes and then i was absolutely terrified cause i was told by her that they are extremely dangerous (i know now they arent) and she found it funny and was laughing as i was splashing and screaming about the stingray, then mu daddy pulled me out and wasnt happy with her and she was grumpy saying he ruined it and was still kinda laughing though and i was very unhappy for the rest of the holiday

I think it would be quite sick to see and actual tierlist of the truly most dangerous fish to humans, i know the top spot would have at most like 50 kills a year because is venemous and people eat it by error, but it would still be cool to hear the whole story about goonchs and others

    • @yens1609

    • @stopyouneedhelp6115

They are really aggressive because the lack of food in the open ocean forces them to be highly opportunistic. Outside of shipwrecks we rarely come in contact with them though, so people will never view them in the light as other “dangerous” sharks.

  • @iTzNikkitty

God the stingray slander is especially fucked up because literally with his dying breaths Steve Irwin pleaded with the world not to demonize stingrays just because he was unlucky enough to be killed by one. By implying stingrays are dangerous monsters, you are straight up just shitting on the legacy and dying wish of one of the most incredible conservationists and science communicators who has ever lived.
Thinking about it actually makes me want to cry. Steve Irwin was my fucking hero and spent his life doing so much good for the world. To go against his wishes like that is fucking vile.

I'm scared of all sharks just because if they just try to 'nibble' or test you it can leave you with deep and horrible punctures not to mention the bacterial infection. But the number one shark I'm terrified of is the bull shark. It's just naturally aggressive and has the ability to swim in salt and fresh water. I'll stick to getting a swimming pool if I ever want to take a dip.
