I've got one from 87 and it's nothing like any of these. Mine has a third presence dial in the middle and no toggle switches at all. Seems like there might be even more variations than you are showing

I fell in love with the Crowther Hot Cake 6 or 7 years ago. I had heard of its existence (I heard the name of the pedal, so I knew it was a thing), but I never actually heard the sounds that this pedal can produce. At least not to my knowledge. But as soon as I heard this pedal in its full potential I was hooked and I felt I really needed to get one. I was obsessed with it!
However, because of the fact that I had to deal with some unexpected financial issues, the Hot Cake became quite unobtainable for me and they didn’t pop up a lot on the second hand market in Europe anyway, so I decided to calm down, face the facts and try to be cool about it.
Then, after two years of NOT listening to the Hot Cake on UA-cam videos like yours and many others, something unexpected happened. I was watching music gear related content (can’t help myself. I suffer from a severe case of GAS), then suddenly a guy, guitarist, demonstrated some licks and/or chords on his guitar, using a Vox and…. the Crowther Hot Cake. But…. nothing happened. I mean, it didn’t do anything for me. I used to be OBSESSED with the sound of that pedal and all of a sudden I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA why I once loved this pedal so much. Not a clue!!!
I figured it must have been that particular video and so I tried some other videos, including some of which I knew I was amazed by the sound in that video. But it didn’t come back. Apparently my taste of sounds changed and I was looking for completely different types of sound. Still, I was confused, because I couldn’t even figure out what it was that I was so obsessed about to begin with. There was nothing I found interesting at all.
And that was it. End of story. Once obsessed, now totally indifferent to the ‘magic’, whatever that magic may have been. 🤷🏻
    SO I THOUGHT!
All it took was another couple of years, not listening to this dull and uninspiring pedal UNTIL THE UA-cam ALGORITHM FORCED ME INTO WATCHING YOUR VIDEO! 😳
What grabbed my attention was the two knob version of the Hot Cake. I probably saw one before. Maybe two. But I couldn’t remember them. So I was curious. And then you started to play. And with the first or second turn of the knob THE MAGIC WAS BACK! And it only got better. And now I know exactly what it is that makes me so unbelievably excited about this pedal. That throaty and raspy voice is quite unique when it’s almost cranked. I’m hooked again. Even though I’ve only just seen your video, it’s all back again and I don’t want to let it go. I took a look at the 2nd hand market here in the Netherlands. There’s one for sale for a very reasonable price. I cannot let that one slip through my fingers, can I? Can I?!?!?! 😰
I’m sorry for the long story. I’m excited and I have ‘a thing’ for unbelievably good overdrives. I have way too many of them, hence the last emoticon.

Was looking for this video thanks for making it. To me, it sounds like the modern hot cake lost a little bit of mojo.

      Yes, it is.
I love the retro feel of early HOTCAKE.

What’s your own opinion mate ? I’ve heard they are basically all the same. I know even the newer ones are still made by the man himself N

      Old has a fuzz-like nuance.
The 77 reissue is a bit cleaner in the middle.
The V2 is a bit higher gain and feels more modern.
      Similar, but not the same.
