Not sure if I regret it, as I captured it into my Mooer Preamp Live before selling it, but I scored a ADA MP-1 at a garage sale last year for $20. It needed a step down transformer and I had to swap out the dead battery, but I sold it soon after for $400. Probably should have kept it just because it's a classic unit. Don't see myself buying one again though.
Quite the impressive roster of players that use this. Thom Yorke, Stephen malkmus, Thurston Moore, Nels cline, Adrian utely. Swervedriver etc. This is by far the best demo of this pedal. Insane sustain and girth. Thanks for this!
Wow, great to see this pedal being featured. It seems like a bit of a hidden gem - don’t hear too much about it, and doesn’t seem to have ever really been cloned unlike all the TS /Klon’s etc. I went through so many overdrive and distortion pedals that never really satisfied before playing through a Hot Cake, and it’s been on my board ever since. I think it absolutely shines as a clean boost, and a just breaking up low gain overdrive. Great video again Leon!
Came for the pedal, stayed for the power chords! I think I'm going to start rethinking all my musical choices now. I got the Hot Cake years ago after checking out what Neil Finn was using on his rig. Love it. Great definition. And the drive set to 100% is killer.
I bought the new one a few weeks ago, same look and form factor. Has the extra modes as switches on top now , with the Blues mode now called "cream". A real stand out pedal amongst my other overdrives. One setting I didn't see you try is full drive with the guitar volume down low to tame it a bit, makes it more playable with darker pickup in the drive area. I like also how the last third of the drive range does a sort of wah like tonal sweep that covers a lot of tonal ground.
Classic bit of kit - great to see it featured! I (and pretty well all guitarists in NZ) had one of these in our rig. One got 'borrowed' so Paul gave me one hot off the press - unpainted - which lasted me till I came to HK in 82. Recently reconnected with Paul and bought a Double Hotcake ('triple' really) and happy to have it in the studio - a hidden Kiwi gem :) Re: your question - when I left NZ I left behind a Sho-Bud Volume Pedal & DeArmond Wah that I used live all thru the 70's . . . that was a mistake!
I personally run this with my Fender Tele and Vox AC15 in my garage rock/garage punk band. In my opinion, it’s the holy grail of overdriven sounds. Lucky to live in NZ where we have these everywhere, definitely recommend them if you can get your hands on one! 😊
I will always have a Hotcake in my rig. They just sound right, it's the most touch sensitive OD I have found, and even having it in the chain but turned off does something to the sounds.
12 years of constant abuse & my Hot Cake developed a power problem. I emailed Paul and posted it back to him in NZ. He fixed it free of charge. Legend! Pedal is now 17+ years old & still my fav. Top demo Leon! Don't ever sell the Hot Cake.
This video made me want to buy another hot cake just cuz. I currently use one all the time and am always finding new sounds with it. Now I want to try it in normal mode as I’ve been using it in bb mode for a while now. Thanks for the very thorough demo!
they may end soon as Paul wife is finishing up doing the soldering, so not sure how many more Paul and his wife will make up and send out,. best to get one now to be safe, Both are retirees and want to spend time with their grandkids,
Paul's definitely earned a sweet retirement. It would be interesting to see him license the design to a company like MXR in a similar way the Timmy or Duke of Tone are. Classic drive!
@@LeonTodd hes had offers of people taking over bur hes worried corners would be cut, maybe his son in law might be persuaded, eventually but he's working as an audio engineer himself .
That's definitely a concern. These pedals are known to some of the most famous guitarists out there, but are really not well known, so they may not continue being made much longer. I'm glad I own a Double Hotcake. I'll never sell it. It was sold to me by the guy who originally asked Paul to make a double version.
The Hot Cake is definitely one of those underrated gems!!! One pedal for me is the MXR CAE Boost/Overdrive. I didn't know how good it was until it was gone. ✌🏻
I wanted this pedal for ages, but that was at a time when I simply couldn’t afford one. And I when I finally got a lot healthier financially I bought a couple of great pedals and I never really thought about it anymore. All of a sudden I didn’t know why I found them to be so attractive. But now the UA-cam algorithm decided it was time to give this pedal another chance by listening to this video. And I am glad I did. What a glorious sound!!! Whaaaaaaa….., now I need one again. What a sound!!! 🧡🧡🧡
The Hot Cake has been around for what seems like an eternity. It’s a classic I’ve never tried myself, but now gets overlooked like the SD-1…just because it ain’t the latest and greatest. As for what have I regretted selling? Generally no regrets but I should have kept my US made Peavy Classic 212…I just didn’t love the reverb on it and killer verb pedals were non-existent at the time. Also, I had a Sherlock Tremit and it was a very nice trem pedal…I think they’re long out of production. Just remembered, I had an Allen Old Flame 210 combo (like a BF 40W) which I sold but I definitely should have kept it and just changed the speakers which the original stock speakers weren’t a great match…novice mistake.
it’s an amazing pedal, I’ve been using them for donkey’s years. Nothing drives other pedals as well as a Hot Cake. I’ve got one on every board and I’ll never sell one.
@@LeonTodd No Sir, I purchased my Hot Cake through a music store in Farmingdale, New York USA. I did not know how to buy it directly from Crowther and could not locate any at a legitimate price except from the Music Zoo
They are very high quality pedals. Paul is a genius. He designed this when overdrive pedals were not really a thing, and op amp distortions were only just coming on the market. It's a completely original design that hasn't been copied because it's not well known.
Im at lunch was just thinking I regret selling my mesa boogie 50/50 classic power amp and ada mp-1. To get a newer amp. A head. You’d either laugh or cringe if you knew which one. I borrow my buddys on occasion and I’ve had it for a few months this round. Hopefully you got a good deal on it.

I’ve had my hot cake for only about a year, and every time I use it I hear new sounds, textures and tones. I love it! Great vid mate!
Wow, with the distortion off that pedal sounds absolutely gorgeous. Almost feels like some subtle amp simulation going on in that thing.
great pedal, it emerges with the original tone like it was part of the amp, thx for show casing it

Ken Fischer from Trainwreck Amplifiers turned me on to the Hot Cake back around 1988. I like the version with the "Mid Lift" switch.

Some Cream/Hendrix tones with the Strat. Very tasty. Sometimes you get almost fuzz-like sounds out of it. I can see why you went back after it.
