@Rc Review I just got my TRX4 Sport 2 Weeks ago. What i did so far: 1. I use Louise Champ tires 120x45 with Aluminium Beadlocks 2. i did brass portalcovers 3. i go for an Hobbywing Quicrun fusion 2in1 1800Kv 4. I remove the Expetion Pack 5. i changed the Rocksliders 6. i Turned the front and rear bumber holders, upside down 7. i put 3 onze lead on each tire In total my Sport is about 8.3 Pounds weight and it performs awesome. I do some heavy technical Rock Trails and I love it. Btw ur Vidz just helped me a lot, and love to watch em. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Germany
Thanks for all the tips, I purchased the traxxas 79 bronco last x-mas, so far its been a fun project, I have done alot of the mods you have mentioned , Brass portal covers on all four wheels and brass diff covers gives me great traction, some pro-line gummy tires helped alot .The better servo is very effective and steering is a stronger feel, two mods that are effective that are not mentioned that worked really well were 1 - change the pinion on the motor to a 9 tooth, it helps to make the motor work more efficiently with wieghts and bigger tires ,less overheating .2 -reconfiguring the control so that the rear diffs lock before the front ,that way you can have posi on the back and open diffs on the front for tight steering downhill. Thanks for the tips I hope these are worth mentioning.
Thanks for the video, I used to be into this back years ago, I bought the TRX 4 2 days ago and I really appreciate the video. I’m blown away by the tech advances in the last 15 years. I love mine so far but have already started upgrades
Francis, you're a bad influence. We have 2 Gen 8s, a TRX4 Bronco, a TRX6, 2 SCX24s, and I ordered a TRX4 Sport last night because I was up watching your videos lol
Great list and great channel! A couple of other things I've found helpful on my trx-4 sport: Installing reversed 100mm shocks with the black plastic spacers removed, taller shock towers and soft springs with a small amount of oil in the very bottom of the reservoir to keep the seals lubed and add a bit of damping at the bottom of the stroke. This setup is nice because it adds a lot of droop without raising the overall ride height much. Flipping the shocks also lowers the CG a little and you can loosen the shaft seal caps farther without them leaking. Broke the front axle shaft at the joint in a tumble so I installed the HD version along with the MIP 4mm wide track kit. After trimming the fenders it works well and seems to side-hill better without looking too goofy. I also use a small saddle pack battery setup because it allows me to move the batteries lower and farther forward than the bowhouse unit. This also frees up space to mount the esc and reciever on a custom tray that sits between the frame rails right above the rear driveshaft. It all seems to work pretty well and doesn't bind even without the long travel links. Still on stock wheels and tires though and the only brass I have is the ssd portal covers. Recommendations for tire/foam/beadlock wheels would be much appreciated. I run on rocks and dirt but not much deep mud. I also run in the wet a lot. Thanks!
I'm new to crawlers so I took your advice and purchased the Traxxas TRX-4 Sport with the above upgrades. I'm sure this is just the first of many new trucks to come. Thanks for all your honest and insightful reviews.
If u dont have the money to buy new tyres you can modify the traxxas stock ones. They are really good modified. Cut the small center lugs and every second of the big lugs also u can try dremmel the lugs so you make tracks in them to soften them up. But you need to replace the foams to dualstage ones that is really important if you want to crawl. Also a cheap way is to buy tyre weights and put them either on the bedlock ring if you have bedlock rims or around the portal house. Try glue with zipp band should work until you have the money for real brass weights.
I've had my TRX4-Sport for two months and love it like one loves a wonderfully obedient pet. I purchased it RTR and accessories so far have been the expedition rack, grill-headlight lenses and tailgate panel/lenses. I'm somewhat a recluse, I don't compete, and there is no 'Climbing' to speak of at my home's desert-scape rock garden necessitating the otherwise very attractive brass weighted portal covers. The Traxxas 'TRA2250' servo with 330in/lbs is, however, atop my wishlist of future upgrades.
Can't wait for my Blue sport next week. Your videos are holding me over :). I recently got back into RC , looks like a great time for them. So many new trucks and cars with amazing designs and tech.
Thanks for all the great advice!!! My 2 recommendations are to skip the steel sliders and shim up the stock one. The steel was too heavy in New England and when side hilling the truck would slide down the hill. The other is to much more highly recommend overdrive. I've done front and rear and it's amazing. Trailing is fine, I'm not going super fast but that's not what the trx for is about. On that note, trx4 is not for high speed. 20mph is fun until you drive any other category vehicle. "Thanks a ton" love that!!!
I got the esc coming wensday , beadlock wheels and tires, with a savor sw-0230mg servo and stock motor with overdrive gears and, aluminum portal covers in the front..
Hello. I love your channel. I like your style of reviewing. I didn’t really care that much about crawling a few months ago but after watching and listening to your reviews I’m starting to get it. Might pick up a TRX4 Sport in the near future. One question: ofc covering crawlers is cool and all but do you think in the future you might start reviewing other type of cars? On road, drift, F1, buggy, sand rail, short course, etc? Would love to hear your take on those types and brands. Huge fan. Take care.
While waiting for my TRX-4 Defender to arrive I watched this video to get an idea of what upgrades RC Review suggests. When the Defender arrived a week ago I immediately replaced the weak stock servo with a 25kg servo and put on a set of aluminum bead lock wheels mounted with Vanquish VXT tires. Rather than replace the stock ESC I decided to go brushless, and yesterday I installed a Hobbywing Fusion 1800kv motor/ESC combination. This morning I added the SSD brass portal covers to the front axle. I will probably replace the stock sliders and go with a low CG battery tray when my wallet recovers from the mods I've already installed. I do primarily trail running, so I won't be using overdrive gears.
Thanks for your time and effort sharing your experiences. I am a novice within the hobby and it looks like the Traxxis sport is a great entry point for me above and beyond toy store vehicles. With your suggested modifications I can maximize the fun without wasting money on marginal upgrades. It seems tires/wheels, esc, and servo will have the greatest impact. Am I correct?
I have a TRX4 Sport (I’ve been into crawling for one year tomorrow) and a TRX4 Kit. I did the tire mod you showed us, and I’m fabricating my own lcg battery trays out of 0.02” aluminum. I ditched the ugly and huge bumpers from the kit, and added the Sport bumpers to it, and threw on a winch bumper from RC4WD and a custom tube bumper on the Sport. I have more mod ideas coming, I just need to get out into the shop and make them happen.
Adding weight (even down low) can be tricky.. You really only gain with climbing, downhill may be worse and traversing across could be worse (puts too much weight on the sidewalls and causes them to fold under making things worse).. In my opinion the best way to add weight is to seal the vent in the tires (air tight), take out the foam, and add about 1.5 ounces of lead shot or BB's inside the tires (all the weight is pressing the tire against the ground).. It is a crawler and won't have adverse effects on tire balance, as the shot or BB's will roll freely inside the tire..
Your wheels and tires are the lowest point on the truck, so adding weight here gives the weight you do add more leverage. To add weight I went with gear head aluminium beadlock wheels. They look great, and add weight as low as possible.
For my climbing needs, I pulled the Bowhouse battery tray and went with the Traxxas inner fenders #8080 which places the battery in the front. Thought we had already agreed this was the best battery placement...LOL
I just subscribed to your channel…Truly honest review and sharing of your knowledge. Just bought my TrX4 last week based on your reviews. Loving my TrX4 😊👍🏽. Thank you.
A very informative video! I've recently bought a TRX4 Sport kit. Pretty much as stock at the moment, apart from Amazon alloy beadlocks, hair buns in the tyres, a Hobbywing 1080 ESC & a Amazon 35kg servo (running at 7.4v). TX & RX is a Flysky GT5 (a bit overkill, but at least plenty of spare channels for lights etc).
I recommend getting wider wheel hexs as well. 8-9 mm hexs seem to work best. The suspension can still flex to it's limits, but still gives you a little bit of width to make it more stable. I run 8 mm brass hexs I found on eBay. Matched up with my aluminum bead lock wheels, it's a night and day difference.
I just wanted to thank you for being so personable with your audience and informative. You saved me quite a bit of money in The crawling hobby; As I would have exhausted quite a bit of money with trial and error. I'm getting a smaller battery I'm going to change the servo, (trx4 79 Bronco) move the battery forward on the front. Invest in some wheel weights play around with those. Most importantly get some 15 weight shock oil. My Hyrax tires come in today. I really your videos. Keep em coming
Great as usual ! In our experience, the most important things are (in this order): - tires and foam (60%) - shocks and suspension calibration (20%) - battery position (10%, only considering central or front position, back is awful) - some frontal weight (only in some models, but battery in front is better than add weight to move in every situation) - bumpers adjust or removal (10%}
I have been competing in some crawler competitions have not had very good luck...with you providing you expertise I am hoping to get better at it ...thanks and you have a great channel ...keep up the great work...
The X4 is a highly capable crawler. My friend and I place top three regularly in local comps. You must do EVERYTHING you can to lower the CG of the truck for comps. Depending on how much you want to win will determine how much you are willing to do to get the CG down. Good luck!
@@baxrok2. thanks I am building a trx4 sport with a little brass in front and try to make it as light a possible if I do add weight it will all be down low....
The 20kg amazon servo seems to be less twitchy with the 6.0v on the Hobbywing better than the 7.4v option. I'm guessing the higher voltage would work better on say a Savox unit.
I am new to r/c crawling and I have a used TRX4 Sport. I found this older video which is very helpful. In this you mention that you have the Traxxas beadlocks and the Proline Hyrax tires and inner foams. Do you have any trouble fitting the Prolines on the Traxxas wheels. Some of the Proline short course tires only work well with Proline headlock wheels. Do you recommend any of the cheaper all aluminum wheels for the Hyrax? Thanks.
I bought the TRX-4 to mount the killerbody gladiator. No bueno. Couldn’t make it come close. So I scored a defender body, added latest lighting and I guess next might be different wheels. Building a Mercury chassis and it’s a tragedy compared to the TRX-4. Agonizing build. Not quite there yet.
automotive wheel weights in front and rear tires. my stock front high trail wheels are 350 grams each. 320 in rears. I used heavy duty battery terminals for extra weight mounted behind front bumper support. next im gonna get some scale accessories before new servo, 1080 I like that idea. also I like stock motor, its faster that fusion pro
Was real happy with the limitations that the scale bumpers and rack on the trx4 defender body, til i got some good tires and wheels. Then all the scale stuff slowly went away. got some ssd low profile bumpers and really dont miss the roof rack and spare. now i have a hard time finding anything i cant get over.
From what I have heard so far the foam inside of the wheels absorbs water like crazy thus adding some weight after driving through deep waters. Is that the case for all crawlers? This might be an additional load for steering mechanism of the truck, don't you think?
Correct! They also almost never dry, best thing to do is seal up holes in the rims and if you have headlocks they’ll be waterproof. You can then run the tires with foams or without, I run without foams and used a gasket maker to seal the rims
I think that the OD/UD gears are only necessary for crawling and not for trailing. Modified Canyon Trail tires are IMO better in most cases/terrains than the Hyrax. For both trailing and crawling, lower the CG of the truck as much as possible. For the crawlers out there: 45/9, soft suspension, 62f/38r, and radical weight reduction everywhere. Low and slow!
hi francis, thx to your reviews i have made up my mind about the trx 4, i just bought the trx4 sport tan, stock for now but i think a real good base to build upon. later today i can go get it in the store so im looking forward to trying it out. thx again m8
I’d go with skid plates over the sliders rights off. The factory plastic sliders will wear but that’s better that’s your differentials getting gouged. I learned that the hard way.
I have changed oil in original suspension from 300 to 150 and now suspension is more faster and more smooth. Nice video with great ideas! Thanks anyways
Why don't you raise your rock sliders with some fuel tubing you can bring them uphalf an inch this brings them flush with the bottom of the truck? It's a great low cost mod
I wanna thank you for all the suggestions.. so far with what you have recommended and a few additional items; I have one badass crawler.. keep up the great work and love the videos..😎😎
Do you have a video setting up the suspension for the sport? I'm having hard time setting it as it sit too low and the rebounce is weak even I'm using 17.5w shock oil and pre-load the spring halfway down.
Thanks for the tips! 🙂 Got the Sport. So far I have only removed the bumpers, installed the Savöx SW-1210SG, CC 10A bec running 7.4V, cut tires and lifted sliders.
I like your 7, however, I would have liked to have seen ability to change shock springs rebounding rates with low cost Traxxas springs and raising the factory sliders
I would agree with your upgrades, I have a TRX blazer and a TRX sport with traxx and tires, but love both, I lifted the blazer and was not good for crawling, still better than some crawlers.but not as good as it was, but weighted the wheels and stuff like you had in your 7 mods and it helped a ton even with the lift...the sport is stock and is amazing but will get some upgrades.👍👍
If you could help Traxxas make revisions to the TRX4, what suggestions would you make? Besides the obvious servo/esc/motor upgrades. Would you change any of the actual build design?
Battery mount for sure. Needs to be lower, smaller and more forward. Need much, much better bumpers front and rear. And need high performance, low-weight bodies that look good. A lighter, much more controllable, higher turn motor is a good idea. Really need better wheels and tires and foam.
@@RCReviewChannel thanks for replying. I was curious what your ideas would be. I suspected you would mention the battery tray but hadn't thought about the bumpers. The body is a trade off because even though I want light weight I also want realism and it's hard to have both. I wonder if we will see Traxxas offer a platinum/ultimate edition like they did with the Slash.
Awesome video mate we have 2 TRX-4s a Sports and Bronco both have weighted bead lock wheels with Flat Iron tyres. Very happy with both cars but need the 1080 ESC upgrade as the Bronco ESC seems to get hot and stop operating correctly (ie) trouble reversing after long drives. Could you let me know if that's a common issue with the standard ESC?
good video, Francis. I’ve got a Sport, so far I only did the flipped bumper mounts, removed the battery tray to experiment with battery placements. So far, it’s even better than stock as it climbs better. I have the HW 1080 on standby, but seeing the difference it made I might just have to install it sooner 😅.
I just put the traxxas part#8080 fender kit mostly so i could relocate my 2200mah battery to the front. How do you feel about that setup? I feel its much better now with the added weight up front . So far i really like my trx4 sport amd can see where it out performs others !
Francis.... (And am I spelling that right? I have a name that has been TORTURED, most of my time on the West side of the Country. So I like to get people's names correct) 😉 On point, I'm not sure why I missed this!! Great initial Mods! I wouldn't add anything else right away. Your List will help the new Wheeler get comfortable with their Rig, without wasting money and time. Gives the N00b just enough to not fall behind his friends.... If he's sticking with it. He will have a feel at that point, what's the best way to move forward! I'm obviously not going to be able to afford one... But I sure see it's potential, and am happy to help others!! 😉 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
Awesome reviews! With right modifications it's almost unstoppable. I got the hyrax predator tyres about a month ago and they are sooo good. Have you tried to increse the with by adding +8mm or +12mm hex? If so, did it increase performence in any way? Thank you for a Great chanel!
So do you think the stock motor is sufficient with your upgrades I assume? Just want to confirm there is no need to get a different motor. By the way, I love your videos!!
I love my trx4 sport I've installed a 25kg servo and aluminum wheels and mounted redcats supper swampers on them oh and lowered the body as much as I could get away with and I love it it's a beast. The only negative is the bumpers.
Hello! Great video, very informative, can you send me links of tires that you recomend? Im from Argentina so I have to buy online and cant return it. Sorry for my english
I need to ask something, trx-4 defender, that car have lockabele diffentials, rear and front. Hos about the trx-4 sport? Always locked diffs? 😊 and wath about axial scx 10? Always locked? 😊
We refuse to review titanium links and metal bits since that is a very light metal. It performs poorly compared to steel since it lightens the lowest part of the rig.
I agree with the weight though. I was interested when I first seen them it'd be interesting if someone comes out with a stainless set for half the price
Great info. Just got my TRX4 Sport. Which slider is for the Sport? The 2 links do not mention it for the Sport model or can I just use either or for it? Thanks...
What about the "long arm lift kit?". You had a previous vid that showed this kit (with mods to the springs, oil, travel limiter) making a massive difference to the TRX4. Do you still like that mod? Is it just too expensive, or still a bit of a secret super-mod? Your vids have super useful info!! ... and your expertise is evident. Cheers.
Hi I just got a trx4 sport and I’m using a 3s 2200 50c lipo and when I turn my wheels all the way to one side or the other, and go full throttle my wheels shake and the truck shakes and makes a noise, I’m not sure what is causing this and if it’s ok or not, but could someone help?
Yes, for sure. We are not sure if it is approved but we've had no problems. Now, if you have micro servos for the 2-speed tranny and locking diffs, it's not good for those servos.
@@RCReviewChannel Thank you very much for that, I still have the micro servos so will look for some higher voltage alternatives. Keep up the good work!

I flip those bumper holders up for more approach and descent angle
62front....no good in downhill....but good for uphill climb...
RC-TNT has some really good tire tests, on both rock and dirt, on his channel. The Canyon Trails did quite well, even unmodified.
Love The voodo Battery Tray for The Sport. Low and good
hi francis, thx to your reviews i have made up my mind about the trx 4, i just bought the trx4 sport tan, stock for now but i think a real good base to build upon. later today i can go get it in the store so im looking forward to trying it out. thx again m8
You are so welcome!
Loving the videos! I really like your energy and the way you present reviews! Keep up the awesome work and I will keep smashing the like button 🔥 🔥 🔥!
Are there heavier servos that might help lower the CG?
You are the only person who is thero on everything your the best
Better shocks and hub spacers to widen it a little is the biggest part for my traxxas trx 4 sport . i think could top 7 mods lol
I like your 7, however, I would have liked to have seen ability to change shock springs rebounding rates with low cost Traxxas springs and raising the factory sliders
yup, great input. The older TRX-4s seem to have bad springs and oil but the TRX-4 Sport and Assembly kit are on point.
Yea I need to get the LCG battery tray for sure!
Yes, only downside is it's so expensive ($28) for what it is.
@@RCReviewChannel 😁👍 Yea that's exactly why I haven't purchased one in all this time!
With stock ESC and motor, what is the best option, to do overdrive in front or underdrive in the read?
Front
Awsome video Just wondering what color of green is that?
I would agree with your upgrades, I have a TRX blazer and a TRX sport with traxx and tires, but love both, I lifted the blazer and was not good for crawling, still better than some crawlers.but not as good as it was, but weighted the wheels and stuff like you had in your 7 mods and it helped a ton even with the lift...the sport is stock and is amazing but will get some upgrades.👍👍
Right on. Thank you for the real world experience share.
I installed brass link's it seemed to help
Great info! I love all your videos I find you highly entertaining and funny. Keep it up!
Hello, great tips. Where can you get the steel sliders? Thanks
Be our 1st crawler trx sport. Love the video on them .
Good choice!
Servo horn upgrade parts should be in 1st / 7 mods as same changing servo. :)
Do,you still have the standard engine? I thought a upgrade to fusion pro 2300kv would be good for trx4 defender?
Great review, what colour did you paint the body ?
good video, Francis. I’ve got a Sport, so far I only did the flipped bumper mounts, removed the battery tray to experiment with battery placements. So far, it’s even better than stock as it climbs better. I have the HW 1080 on standby, but seeing the difference it made I might just have to install it sooner 😅.
Yeah, the Hobbywing is a game changer for the Sport, especially since it's not a 2-speed. Made us realize how bad the original ESC is. And it's $90
yup, at that price it makes me wonder how did it get that good..
So I like to get people's names correct) 😉
On point, I'm not sure why I missed this!!
Carmine ✈🚂🚙
I like the rocks because we don't have too much of that here in Holland 😁
Awesome reviews! With right modifications it's almost unstoppable. I got the hyrax predator tyres about a month ago and they are sooo good. Have you tried to increse the with by adding +8mm or +12mm hex? If so, did it increase performence in any way? Thank you for a Great chanel!
Yes, the offset mod is so good and cheap!!! Great for sidehilling
So do you think the stock motor is sufficient with your upgrades I assume? Just want to confirm there is no need to get a different motor. By the way, I love your videos!!
I put my small 1400 traxxas battery at the front just on the thing that holds the bumper.
I love my trx4 sport I've installed a 25kg servo and aluminum wheels and mounted redcats supper swampers on them oh and lowered the body as much as I could get away with and I love it it's a beast. The only negative is the bumpers.
same experience as us!
Hey Buddy I am wanting to build a 62 jeep gladiator 1.10 scale and I was wondering if you know of one or someone who knows of one?
Is this the same vehicle as the trx blazer just a different body?
Have you seen the samix titanium high clearance links? No one has reviewed one yet. Also, couldn't find a cheaper steel pair of high clearance links
We refuse to review titanium links and metal bits since that is a very light metal. It performs poorly compared to steel since it lightens the lowest part of the rig.
@@RCReviewChannel Wouldnt the harder metal hang on the rocks less than a steel one?
I agree with the weight though. I was interested when I first seen them it'd be interesting if someone comes out with a stainless set for half the price
Great info. Just got my TRX4 Sport. Which slider is for the Sport? The 2 links do not mention it for the Sport model or can I just use either or for it? Thanks...
You can use either one for sure.
Cheers.
MIP axle wideners help with the sidehilling
Great tip. We have that on one of our vehicles.
What battery were you using in the video?. Theres no link in the description.
Awesome, can you please do some driving techniques sometime? Im an old newbie :P
that is a good idea!!!
RC Review same, I’m going to buy a crawler once I finish my research
The trx4 trucks are compatible with 3s lipo batteries out of thebox????
Yes sir
What are your thoughts on the TRX4 High Trail
It’s good. Not a performer though and the platform is getting a little old
Did you only add the SSD portals to the front or all the way round?
Look for a forward weight distribution. 60/40 to 55/45. So dont do too much weight in the rear
Its normal. Dont worry.
I know your probably not going to respond, but do you have your esc bec set to 7.4 on the tqi receiver?
Isn’t Traxxas receiver is only rated to 6volts?
You want the front axle to spin faster than the rear?
For climbing yes
Did this version have both UD and OD? Or just OD front? Thanks ahead of time. 👊
This one just has OD. So 12.5% front wheel spinning faster
@@RCReviewChannel Perfect! Thanks man!
What bumpers would you suggest?
Is it ok to run a standard trx4 receiver on 7.4volts from a 1080 esc please?
Yes, for sure. We are not sure if it is approved but we've had no problems.
Now, if you have micro servos for the 2-speed tranny and locking diffs, it's not good for those servos.
@@RCReviewChannel Thank you very much for that, I still have the micro servos so will look for some higher voltage alternatives. Keep up the good work!
Why not include brass diff covers?
