- I take a look at a lens I've lusted after for years and now finally have. Welcome to my Nikkor 17-35mm f2.8. And we also welcome another newcomer to the family...

Just picked one of these up for $160, seems in great shape but untested so who knows if the autofocus works. At least its a wide lens so i can just slap it to infinity most of the time. Going to be using it on my Nikon F5. Should hold up great on 35mm.
AF doesn't really matter with this type of lens - especially if used for landscape photography where MF is the order of the day anyway :-)
Certainly looks the bizz! I'm sure it will yield excellent results too Nick.
I hope it will Alan. It's a very well made lens that I do know. whether I can do it justice is another thing!
Got one for 450 bucks. It is brand new, the serialnumber starts with 44 and that is great because 45 is where it stopped. Corners wide open are not that great but I knew that. Great build by the way.
built like a tank but unfortunately the AF can become flaky, developing a squeaky noise :-(
Chico 😅.
Been having a break from UA-cam recently.
I hope you're well mate.
We had a saying back in the day when we were riding,
"Feel the quality,
feel the workmanship,
feel the price" 😅.
Nice lens 👍
don't blame you mate :-)
I know - quality doesn't come cheap. but the rewards are usually kit that'll last you years. the other old adage of buy cheap, buy twice (or more!!) is very true.
Beautiful lens and its images too Nick! I have the RF 14-35mm f/4 L but don’t use it as much as I use my other two RF lenses. I plan on using it a lot more as soon as warm weather returns. 🥶🥶
thanks TC
wide angle lenses certainly take a bit of practise to get the best from them I find. usually having too much clutter in the frame and main subjects getting lost are the main issues. But get the work in and the rewards are there - sometimes!
@@duringthemeanwhilst Yes, they do take some getting used to. I know practicing with my 14-35 on a regular basis is much needed!
That doesn’t look like a ferret, it looks more like a parakeet. Enjoy your new toy, it looks to be in excellent condition.
the man in the shop assured me it was a ferret. I'm taking him back, I've been had...
@@duringthemeanwhilst There’s an easy way to find out, if it talks to you, it’s a ferret (ok, I’ll get my coat).
Nice lens. I have a Tokina 17-35 f4 for my D780 and Z6. Your Nikon is faster at 2.8 and maybe an edge at f4, but after that I wager they are very similar. Problem is, while I have too many lenses, I tend to go out with one lens at a time, and the 17-35 doesn't go out very often. When the weather is better, I will need to force the point. Thanks,
thanks Jay. the Tokina is another superb lens. I recall when I got my first Nikon digital camera (an APSC model) I wanted a Tokina 11-16 but couldn't quite afford one so got the Tampon 10-24 instead. That was another really nice lens though. The 17-35 is quite a heavy thing to cart about on the off chance. I think it's a lens you need to plan a shoot around (well, with my back at least!!)
Does this lens has manual apeture ring? i am thinking to use this lens on manual focus, adapted on Panasonic
Yes it has an aperture collar 😊
I have never dabbled with Nikon but have always had an inquistive mind regards to how would I enjoy? I have a freind who had this lens and he raved about it... and then eventually went the way of lots of people and starting shooting mirrorless Sony !! You deffo have gas 🤣
well you're more than welcome to borrow my Nikon kit Al :-)
I don't get the Sony thing. great AF yes but do you really need that for landscapes / nature? is their build quality still suspect? there used to be nightmare stories of cameras just not working or falling apart even.
I have a D700 a D7000 and an F2, looking for a wide zoom short list is Nikon 16-35 mm 18-35 mm and 17-35, most used lens is an AF 24mm f2.8 any advice would be appreciated
hi Robert. nice selection of cameras you have there 🙂
I've owned all three of those lenses over the years and without doubt the 16-35 renders the best IQ but has no aperture collar so wouldn't work on your F2? The 17-35 is soft in the corners at 17mm, even at f8 and can suffer AF issues but is a lovely lens with that faster aperture across the range. I'm not sure if there are two 18-35s, but the one I owned was very cheap and not great at all, with massive distortion at the wide end.
Have you considered another prime? An 18mm or 20mm would complement your existing lens well and offer superior IQ over the zooms.
Hope this helps, Nick.
@@duringthemeanwhilst Thanks Nick, I am leaning toward the 16-35 for the handiness of traveling with only one lens as I do with the 24mm at present, I am not using the F2 much and prefer a MF lens on it, A wide prime is a good option maybe a 14mm to get the foreground sharp, landscapes are my favorite subject, looking forward to your future videos.
Need to decide if weight is deciding factor 17-35 heaviest followed by 16-35
Do u need prime or zoom
For me it’s zoom and perhaps pick 18-35 - however I own 17-35 on Df and is my top 3 nikkors
35mm on 17-35 is normal looking
17mm is ok but need to stop down
16-35 has intolerable distortion at both ends - I sold it
My 2 pence
Man, get to the point finally
thanks, glad you enjoyed the vide… oh
