He is correct about that quote. In all the worlds history, there were always conquerors even among the same countrymen.
With a Patron Saint of warriors, st George, what would you expect?
Babu spoke well, trade = ok, ruling = ok, oppression and abuse = not ok.
There are a couple errors with the map that Knowledgia used to show the British Empire at 1:47:
1. The British didn't rule all of Cameroon, they only ruled what is now the Northwest and Southwest Region of the country (or the unrecognized breakaway state of Ambazonia) while the Northern Cameroons joined Nigeria. The rest of Cameroon was French. However from 1884 to 1916, Cameroon was called Kamerun and it was German.
2. It doesn't show British Honduras, what is now Belize. This colony lasted from 1783 to 1981.
3. It doesn't show British Ceylon, what is now Sri Lanka. This colony lasted from 1796 to 1948, though they didn't rule the entire island until 1817.
4. Doesn't show Jamaica. Yes their Caribbean colonies were small, but you can still see Jamaica on this map and it should be red. The colony lasted from 1655 to 1962.
5. They didn't rule over all of Somalia. The only part that was colonized by them was British Somaliland in the northern half (or now just the de facto Republic of Somaliland). They occupied the rest of Somalia during WWII to end Italian control, and it then became an UN Trust Territory until 1960.
6. They didn't rule all of Yemen. Just Aden (which became the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen). What would become Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) was the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen
7. The Falklands aren't red either
8. Fiji isn't red
thank you dear leader 🙏
Though small, didn't they had colonies in China as well? Although I'm not sure of the dates, so that may not have come at the height of the empire.
@@MrFreakHeavy they had special regional rights, which they basically controlled
With Fiji and the falklands, they’re just small islands that would be hard to show on the map
Don't forget they didn't rule North Yemen either
"This is something that children learn in schools and colleges, and today you are here teaching us this for free, so it is a big deal for us". It is easy for us to forget how privileged we are to have access to the internet essentially whenever we like, and to be able to learn these things freely and casually, even if it comes with the struggle of having to sort trustworthy sources from untrustworthy sources by our own judgement. If I wanted to learn the history of the British empire, or about the creation and significance of the printing press or so on, I can do so simply be looking for it and spending a few hours of my time and I would think nothing of it. But for these men, such a thing is truly extraordinary. We shouldn't take it for granted.
They should see the video: "Every country that Britain has invaded".
That would blow their minds as it blows everyone's mind.
This video is fine. But the video "Every country England has ever invaded" is badly made, misinformation and should not be shown.

I work with Indians and they have a very educated view on it. While Britain did colonise them, it was ni different than what was happening inside India. Without British rule there is a high chance they would be far worse than they are nowm

The British may be on an island but it is a mistake to think they believed were not at risk of invasion.
The history of Britain is filled with different tribes and Countries taking over.
Celt tribes invaded from Europe. The Romans of Italy occupied it for a long time. The Normans, The Saxons, The Angles and the Vikings, all were very successful in adding Britain to their Empires.
true simply being on an island did not protect them from invasions, but they eventually realized this and beefed up the british navy till it was the strongest in the world. No need to worry about invasions if you blow them up before they get to you
We were invaded so many times, we became experts at invading others. No country with a coast, no matter how isolated, was safe from the British desire to invade.
While this is true it was also long before the modern English kingdom was established. After that there were no more invasions. The last big invasion was the Norman conquest which came directly after the Norwegian one who was defeated just days beforehand.
*adding England to their empires, Britain itself has never been Invaded, if you don’t know what I mean look it up

The guy in the middle is like °o° he's mesmerized
For balance
The British empire was also instrumental in stamping out the slave trade.
All other civilisations viewed slavery as a given part of life.
Africans, for example, were still being slaved in middle Eastern countries right up until the early 19 hundreds.
Sadly, African slaves in the middle East were also castrated, hence why we don't have "African Arabians", as we have African Americans. Despite the fact that Islamic countries, against Muslim laws, slaved off more Africans than the Europeans & Americans.
Formerly slaved people were given full citizenship.
For balance, we must recognise that this was the unique occurrence. Not the slavery itself.
Not that the British government did that solely out of the goodness of their hearts. First of, the economic importance of slavery had already declined when they finally decided to get rid of it. Secondly, increasingly frequent slave revolts in the caribbean had started to make keeping the slaves subjucated more costly than the profits their unfree labour would generate. Thirdly, "Fighting slavery" now became a convenient casus beli to invade and colonize nations that engaged heavily in the slave trade (such as the Ashanti Empire). Polities that had only been able to become so large because the British (in combination with the Arab slave trade, but on the West coast it was mostly the Brits) had been effectively funding them as their main buyer of slaves.
There were many brave British abolitionists who sincerely fought slavery and their efforts should be recognized, the collective British government at the time not so much.
It's also incorrect to say that "all other civilizations viewed slavery as a given part of life". That's just not true.
TLDR: Abolishing the slave trade rather early on was good, the motives not so much. And that is not me going out of my way bashing the British in particular, basically every major polity during that time had very selfish motivations even for the good things they did. History just shouldn't be sanitized, that's doing a disservice to all our past.
@@sherlocksmuuug6692 It cost a bloody load of money to abolish it.
I didn't watch the video, I knew it would be biased. What about the French, Spanish, American neo-colonialism, the Mongo!s etc. The reason for the empire which was hardly a planned thing was largely trade wars with other countries. India had its own empires.

@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 And the Dutch also ruled England that one time because the English people preferred them over their own government
@AustraKaiser Not quite, the government invited the dutch stadtholder to replace the catholic absolutist who was threatening the authority of parliament (and by extension the government) which was established after the civil war. To legitimise him he was married to a female member of the House of Stuart, the ruling house of the time. William (the dutch ruler) was forced to sign an agreement that basically handed over a shit ton of power to Parliament, and severely cut down the power of the monarch. The Dutch (or more accurately William) weren't in control. If they were, Parliament might not have let them invade. What William got out of the invasion was basically english involvement in a continental european war, which his country was losing. Perhaps he could've invaded if parliament refused to hand the country to him, but given his continental position I doubt it.

You bro you’re empire was a joke!! You only stole lands from us the Portuguese otherwise your empire wouldn’t be anything!
I am British and have to say that building empires by invading another land by any means, be it military conquest or under the pretence of trade, should be condemned to history, and should be taught not as a means of glorifying a nation, but as a warning of how greed leads to oppression and resentment and ultimately war. The fact is that power corrupts human beings, and an excess of power leads to corruption in excess. We see this in so many countries throughout history. In my view it is better to build alliances, friendships, trade deals, cultural awareness and respect between people from different lands so that everyone has the same opportunities to improve their lives. Another thing to remember is that the wealth of the British Empire reached only a minority of British people. The vast majority of British people were poor, working 6 or 7 days per week in terrible conditions and living 2 or more families in slum housing during the time of the empire. The common person in Britain suffered at the hands of the same wealthy people who were directing the growth of the Empire.

Actually, other countries, including France, Spain and England also had a few failed colonies, especially at the beginning.
A lot of colonies failed, it's a bit like a business.
Because Scotland was smaller it was even more difficult though, and the joint king with England made it difficult to arrange diplomacy with France against Spain. Because of English hostility with Spain, Spanish privateers would attack Scottish ships since they shared a king with England, but English royal navy ships would only protect English merchant ships. If a country as small and weak as America could fight and win freedom from the British, it begs the question why others did not do the same. History may show that not only did Britain fight for the fair treatment of many of the places where they did trade. Those nations benefitted enormously from the British in other ways where they may not have had kind rulers of their own. Many Africans were freed from slavery ...from being bought and sold...by the blood sweat and tears of the British. Many institutions were left behind by the British when they were finally driven out...how much of that would have been there without their presence? That the British were colonizers and oft times brutal, it should be balanced against what was there before their arrival. Much of Africa once colonized and ruled by Europeans, has sunk into a corrupt form of dictatorship with slavery again re-emerging. History is not simple. People are not simple. Large populations have every form of good and evil people within, many without the restraints of morality, ethics and religion. Communist countries have the worst reputation for the treatment of people while promising the good...They have no belief in God and will not allow that belief. China now has millions of Uigers who are muslim in concentration camps under horrific conditions. History is like driving backwards at 40mph while looking in the rearview mirror...very tricky and dangerous.
North America was settlers it didn't comprise of majority natives, It was akin to civil war. Secondly they did not have as many places to fuel up and fall back to close by, making it hard to maintain foothold.
The British were far less brutal than earlier empires of history.
@@anathema2325 - The American colonies were also aided by France, Spain and even some natives and Britain had to fight on many fronts around the world as a result. The colonies only on one. Britain was also "little" but widespread and fighting far away from home base. The "taxation without representation" myth was actually based on taxes the British levied to PROTECT the colonies from incursions by the Spanish and French. They were actually paying for their own defense. Was Britain supposed to protect them for free? Now the US is the current empire interfering everywhere and not always at the wish of or for the benefit of the places they have interfered. As I said elsewhere, look at the former British colonies of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and even the US Left with legal and governmental basics to create stability. What they did with it remains up to those nations.
@@susieq9801 I think that "taxation without representation" as a myth is probably going too far. As many rallying cries, it was used, but was it the only reason for revolt? A long way from it. Monarchy is a dictatorship by another name. Could be benign, could be horrific. The more removed the authority/power from the people, the more likely the revolt. Not to imply that pure democracy should rule...it has it's own problems. The point is that there is a tipping point where those in power are so removed from the people being governed that they cannot justify their decisions or serve the people well enough to prevent a revolt. There is virtue in subsidiarity and solidarity is hard to maintain at a distance.
@@lmtellsho6283 - Unfortunately what you say is true. Right now in the US the people in power are very far removed from the people they rule. The US is both a theocracy and a plutocracy. Not much different from a monarchy since it's till rule by wealthy and usually hierarchical families only under a different guise. The poor slobs at the bottom suffer in every system because power corrupts. There are two sides to every story. Sure some of the things we did were not good at the time, but you are seeing the world from a modern perspective, and not the reality of that age. India at the time was in a constant war between Muslims and Hindus, and other sects. Britain brought an end to that squabbling. I'll give you an example of the British and Indian logic at the time... an Englishman called Sir Charles Napier went to India, and he observed a practice called Suti (widow burning), when he asked the hindu chief why is it they burn their women, for this practice is evil... the Hindu priest said "this is our custom and you should respect it, that we burn the widows of rich men". Sir Charles then replied "if this is your custom and I am to respect it, then I shall follow up with my custom, for it is custom in England to hang men who kill women, so if you continue with your custom of Suti, then I shall proceed with mine". Yes it is true we did evil things, but we also did many great things for India too. We built the roads and the buildings, we brought trade and we brought medicine, we brought trains and showed the people how to farm their land properly and how to rejuvenate it, how to better preserve water supplies and how to survive the monsoon season's destruction, how to handle wildfires. On top of that, we brought democracy and laws. In every empire throughout history, there is bad deeds done, but the British unlike every empire before them, dd more good than bad. There is a an English saying that states, to tame a horse one must use both the carrot and the stick.
let me tell you a story - During the world war the British sent many indian troops to fight on their behalf to foreign countries . Since a working army requires food supply the Britishers took away all the food supplies from the Indian state of West Bengal . People of Bengal started to die due to lack of food ,mothers were begging for food for there young children . This food was snatched by the British as extra food for themselves for 'just incase' it could be used . This phenomenon led to something called the Bengal famine . British soldiers posted in Bengal got worried about the brutal sight of the state due to millions of deaths of people , so some soldiers went and informed Winston Churchill about the Bengal famine and innumerable deaths of innocent people and urged to give the people some food . On that Winston replied Why hasn't Gandhi died yet ?
@DiZ Zkl Of course we did it for ourselves. It is not the reason why someone does something that matters, but the thing that is done and the finalised product, that is what matters. No nation is selfless, we're men not angels. A wasp nest will eat everything it can around it, it does not care about the corn on the field it inhabits, it eats the pests to help its nest and feed itself. But by doing so, it removes just enough of the grasshoppers around the field, and so they cannot become a swarm of locusts. Therefore this helps the corn, and therefore the farmer. The wasp did what it did for selfish reasons, but the outcome was beneficial all the same.
@@suhu8246 The British during WW2 fought for you, not for ourselves. The Germans at the time saw the British as a superior people like themselves, and they respected us very much and considered us to be equal to them. Had we not chose to fight them in the war, then I assure you there would be no Indians today at all, because you were not considered equal by the Germans, you were considered little more than apes. If we had not fought them, and asked the Indians to fight alongside us against them, then you would not exist at all. I think the people who run the channel told them to be more exaggerated.
Side note: I love the unfinished painting of the Treaty of Paris 1783. The British delegation refused to pose for the painting out of embarrassment at having to acknowledge the independence of their former colony.
@Denise Bond Dude, did you seriously just roll all indigenous Americans into one group and call them the "red men?" The different tribes of indigenous Americans are incredibly diverse. Lumping them all together is like lumping together everyone in Asia. Your post makes you sound like a racist since you fixate on race so much.
I am white, I am also a native American in the sense that I was born and raised in the United States. I am not a Native American in the sense that my distant ancestors were indigenous to this land but a basic reality of history is that land is owned by the people who control it. Put simply, this land is my land, this land is your land.
@@CStone-xn4oy guessing he rolled all indigenous americans into one group as “red men”, because that’s how the British saw them, and he’s giving a British perspective right now.

thats interesting both the usa and india were once ruled by the brits and both eventually gained independence. nice video!
Why is it never mentioned that MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WERE KILLED in the countries that little Britain invaded-?

There were parts of India also ruled by the Dutch (like Cochin) and other European states.
If you use that logic, parts of the US were Dutch (New York used to be New Amsterdam), Spanish (Florida and many other lands), French (Louisiana named after king Louis of France), and Russia (Alaska)

@@soumyadipmukherjee6627 Couldn't care less about Indian delusions about geopolitics. The biggest irony of all, the twisted hypocrisy of it, going on about being a superpower while complaining about other superpowers. I find MOST of the comments stupid. The British gave more to India than Mr Mohdis' Government gives to Indians today.

"It is not child's play to rule such a large area."
While Britannia ruled the waves, the Mongols ruled the land. As the Mongol Empire was the largest land empire. As an Iraqi saying goes: "If two fish fight in the Tigris, the British are behind it" I mean they did divide the Middle East with the French without caring for the people too. It wasn't just the Indian subcontinent they did that.
and if colonization of India wasn't enough, can't forget about the atrocious border between India and what is now Bangladesh that they left behind. Basically, picture the India-Bangladesh border, and now picture it as if it was a connect-the-dot drawing....that was the result. There was enclaves (a part of country inside another country) everywhere, and it was so bad it had the world's only third-order enclave...a piece of India inside of a piece of Bangladesh inside of a piece of India inside Bangladesh. Yup. Thankfully, it was resolved peacefully in 2015 where the Indian enclaves within Bangladesh were given to Bangladesh while the Bangladeshi enclaves within India were given to India, leading to the end of *162 enclaves*
The Mongols weren't the largest land Empire, In total mass that was still the British Empire, the Mongol Empire was the largest continuous land Empire though.
enjoying the videos, but I wish when the guys are watching the videos , sometimes is hard to see the screen is too small keep up the good work.

Yes this video give a good condensed perspective of the east Indian company which back in the early 70s before he graduate from high school they didn’t really get into it they didn’t show the comprehensiveness of what Britain had done
so I learned something from this
Unfortunately when I was going to school pre-high school the teachers were also the history teachers were also the guys that did the coaching for the football team and they didn’t teach history very well….
This looks SO set up and the reactions look SO false!!
Please more history
Babu with his words of wisdom once again.
"there is nothing wrong with ruling countries but I do not like the atrocities comitted by them on the people while Ruloing the countries"
I am British, I am aware things were less than perfect in Areas of the empire but the reason we maintained control for so long was that we let the local rule themselves and only lightly influenced them. The exceptions being India and Australia, where things were just... awful.
But the thing is, a lot of the infastructure built is still used today in these nations. It is also worth noting that the partition of India was done at indias request, and that the caste system has nothing to do with british colonialism. Britain may have had a heavy hand, but look at India today, would it be a united nation without Britain? Or would it be a fractitious collection of individuals seeking dominance over each other?
We're not of guilt but, Indians did govern themselves to a certain extent.
Half baked info is always dangerous
I can’t not notice the guy on the right constantly shaking his head in a “yes, no” manner consistently 😅🤣
Little did they know, America was British mwhahaha

Everything good and bad that has happened in this world got us to where and who we are today. Both as individuals and nations it's important to understand that and remember it was different times and different educations and knowledge of the world and it's people.
@@rhythmkhandelwal2940 I didn't justify it. It's just how things ended up in precolonial times. As it would never happen again. Those were expansionist times. People very often bring up things like the Amritsar massacre and the Bengal famine when talking about British rule in India. But the important thing to bear in mind is that there was also Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian empires but you don't hear about massacre they committed, not because they didn't commit any, but instead because they were commonplace. This wasn't the case with the British Empire.
what? british empire didn't commit any massacres?
Lol Spanish empire never came to India Portuguese were present only in goa French colonies were way better people were treated with respect Dutch colonies were short lived when British empire took upon them the massacre committed by British are the real ones and most devastating one ever done by a country to other

Let's not mention the Spanish the Portuguese the French and Dutch
And Germans. The Russians..
No it's always the British or should i say english because most dont know the difference between the two . There is not a country that hasn't practiced imperialism in some form or another .
Our ancestors made the history we didn't.
It's always the hate thrown at the British people that annoys me. Like do they really think the British people all had a vote to go to war and decided "yea lets send our loved ones into battle to die for some spices"?
Learn to live with your history and don't bring up what others did to avoid dealing with it. This video is about the British Empire, not European colonialism and imperialism, so of course they didn't talk about other countries. Would it make any difference if they had included e.g. the genozide Germany (my country) committed against the Herero in Namibia? Is it in anyway a lesser evil because so many nations commited crimes against so many people? No, blaming others for their atrocities to avoid dealing with your own guilt won't help you.

I wouldn't blame a single living German person for what happened during the war and wouldn't expect them to feel guilt for it either. Show them a video about how the British worked hard to stop slavery in Africa. The abolitionist movement.
Good song guys!
We didn't invade enough.
Actually it was a Private Company that governed your country. 👀
The British army was always very small. It had to be because Britain is a small island nation and so they decided to put their money into their navy.
At the time of Dunkirk the British army in Europe was just 220,000. The French army was three million and so was the German.
Britain ruled much of the world because they were the most advanced people on earth.
Because after the Napoleonic Wars most of Europe was devastated and their navies destroyed. Same reason America took over after WW2 and the Arabs after the Byzantine Persian Wars.
Not exactly sure how they were more advanced barring the brief spell of the Industrial Revolution.
@@ayodejiolowokere1076 Britsh navy was already more powerful before Napoleonic Wars
@@---du3nm Not to the point of monopolizing global seapower. The Dutch, Danish, Spanish and French navies combined were much bigger. After their destruction Britain alone outmatched the others combined.
