Someone apparently has never done any caulking in their entire life. Hopefully it seals up great
Dude still lives with his dad (parents). The fact he didn’t realize that the drain holes are there for when the truck is parked outside during a rain storm and not because the engineers thought it would leak with a camper shell on was my first clue that he has no clue.
Holy shit, I just saw the caulk 😳
I'm a day late and a dollar short on finding out about the infamous "Tacoma Leak." My camper shell has been on for over a year, and I always thought the installers must have done a crappy job. I put some duct tape along the edge of the shell near the corners and still got leaks. It took me a while to figure out it was the truck, not the shell. Thanks for sharing this info.....DAMN YOU, Toyota Company! uninstall and repairs soon to come.
I would say take it to a camper specialist! my weekend warrior fix only SLOWED the leak down and left my bed all goopy and nasty.... Unless you think you can become an Artist with 100% silicon!
This is 100% legit information. I literally just got my new shell installed on my Tacoma this afternoon. The installers at the shop fortunately knew about this issue with the 3rd gens and they do this on all new installations. Only difference is they use some kind of non hardening rubber, same stuff used to seal seams on RV’s. Whatever you use just make sure you do it.
its been a nightmare. Im shocked the company that installed it didn't address this. Its so bad on my 3rd gen.
Terrible, if you put rubber between the cap and bed ya simply could have made a drip edge piece to hang between bed and cab passing over the crack. 🤦🏻♂️. I’ve done it on my previous Tacoma and never had water issues!
Anthony Weber would / could you send a pic of your drip edge fix ... I’m fixing to get a leer for my Tacoma
Could you please respond to this with some photos or a video showing how you completed this? I would like to seal mine up. Without all of the silicone. Thank you
@@tsdub Sorry, I don’t have any pics but on my new 2020 Tacoma I’ll be sure to take some and a video of what I had done previously. As of now though I haven’t had any issues with my leer cap on.
I would suggest adding Cali raised bed stiffeners because if you're adding a camper shell or a tent or a rack the bed is made a composite plastic as you know and over time there can be a stress crack and if that happens you'll have to buy a whole new bed I installed Cali raised bed stiffeners and they are awesome the beds beds more strong and they weren't that expensive highly recommend them
I did not think of this, how much did they cost you??
Yep I did the same thing. My bedding and shelves are inside. I did one extra step by skirting the perimeter of the inside where the cap meets the bed rail with plastic membrane . Now the trickles come in and hit the plastic and run down into the drain holes. Everything stays dry.
Thanks Raja. This really helped. Great video and excellent information.
Really good information man. Thanks!
Use 3m 5200....just make sure it will never need to be removed...
I would like to be able to take my shell off when I need a open bed, I plan on hanging it so I can drive under it for install/removal
Very helpful. Will have to look into doing that to my 2016 access cab trd off-road. Have not pulled the trigger yet because the shells are expensive 3k range what I priced out.
Good gawd…never used a caulking gun before, then??
Thanks for the advise
Ruta del vino 🍷 heck yeah!!
would have used foam with a 'little' adhesive
Horrible design by Toyota … I’m having this exact issue … Great video 👍
This is helpful, thank you! Question if you don't mind - what is the height from truck bed to cap ceiling with the cap installed?
Keep it coming brother👍👍

Thanks for the video. How many tubes of silicon did you use ?
Caifanes y soca stereo 🎸🎸….. al 💯
Can i please ask what the star bit size is on the bolts??
That silicone will encourage rust at all points that it comes in contact with metal parts.
Will your pickup’s paint create a stronger enough barrier¿ probably not!
Ask any competent auto glass installers about customer silicone patch jobs.
The sealer that you can use that does not encourage rust is automotive grade windshield urethane, which can be purchased at your local autobody paint supply store.
Did your shell make your truck sag in the back?
OMG!!!!! Your a Butcher... That is Ridiculous
Butyl tape works much better and is much easier to remove.
I was able to fix that but know it’s the gap on the front of the camper shell door we’re it connects between the tailgate and camper door on the left and right side water is still coming threw anyone got a fix for it ?
Coming from a professional Caulker and Waterproofer….I’m sorry but this was hard to watch 🤦♂️
Yea dude… I’m sorry :( I tried my best
Love CAIFANES
Had this guy never heard of weather stripping?
Yeah I think I’ll stick to it having a minor leak..
Oh my lord!!!! What a friggen mess...!!!!!
You can use rubber and cut it to fit... lol 😅
just cram it with putty
Removed incorrect info

@@microsnook3 I changed the part number in my original

Horrible design by Toyota … I’m having this exact issue … Great video 👍
Sorry to hear this Al... Yes, I was so happy to have the shell, but I truly never got the truck to be 100% water proof back there :( I hope you get it done! I have since sold my 3rd Gen Tacoma
I’m very happy with the Truck other than that … Honestly I would of not spent 4500.00 on the shell which included the upgrades if I knew this was an issue … I was upset set with the company who I bought the shell with not elaborating on the fact there is a leak issue with Tacomas … I probably would of just invested in a 4 wheel camper pop up and called it good
@@alansarpy Al, This is very disappointing to hear my friend... The shop Should very much so ensure that they take care of the leak!! Its just a shame that it can spring from anywhere at anytime... Perhaps you could sell the shell Private Party?? On my new Nissan Frontier Pro 4x I opted for a minimalist Camper set up with my RTT, You should check that out!
@@BlazzinTech yeah the company I bought the shell from has plugged it up it with silicon and it looks horrible to look at 😠, but At least the leak is down by huge amount … I know it’s just a band aide .. I called Toyota and they said it’s not their problem Lmao !
@@alansarpy Maybe you can try Permatex Gasket Maker
