Lenovo ThinkPad T430: Motherboard Replacement Guide

- Опубліковано 19 вер 2024
- Hey guys! Today we have a quick video showing how to replace the motherboard in the ThinkPad T430! This process is very similar for the T410 and T420 models, however I will be showing the T430 in this video. Enjoy, and thanks for watching!
Thanks, this was very helpful (so far). Figured that I would try to replace the motherboard first before buying a new laptop.
There were some items missing from your video:
1 more screw needed to be removed that holds the motherboard down. Mine was located on the underside (like the others), about in the center (left-right), right behind the battery connectors.
Another thing is the pull out tray for the express card slot. I had already removed the hard drive and optical drive.
Lastly, on my T43 laptop, the ethernet port connector is a separate but small circuit board connected-attached to the motherboard.
Now I just have to reverse the process with the new motherboard.
Despite my comments on the missing item, I REALLY did learn from your video. Gave me some idea of how to do it. Worse case I make things worse - but it is already a brick, so nothing lost.
Thanks Again!
Thanks for this! Though I really wish you had put it all back together, just for those who are extra special :^)
Put the video in reverse
0:50 Attention! 6th little screw under the battery.
Yeah so I broke my palm rest following this vid.
@@UnitAlir so did I
@@anthonyfmoss I should have just used my own deductive skills to figure out where the screws would be. I figured I'd use the old wisdom of following a disassembly tutorial instead.
The uploader seriously needs to make a correction to avoid more people breaking their palm rests.
Great video! Love how easy the power jack is to replace.
Yep, I wish every laptop was so easy to work on.
@@ThePCHandyman9 Okay?
Cheers buddy! If you ever get a break from college and feel bored, I'd love to see this video remade with you also putting it back together as someone else commented; for those of us who are extra special. I powered down and disconnected the AC and battery from a T430 i5 model but I didn't hold the power button for 20 seconds after doing so to remove all excess power still flowing through the mobo and I blew the motherboard fuse when connecting a new display. So tip to anyone else watching, remember to do the power down or wait long enough for it to do so naturally.
I've never had issues like that, as long as the AC adapter and battery were both removed.
Sebi's Random Tech yeah me either I can only assume it's because I did it immediately and didn't hold the power button down. I'll be receiving a mobo replacement next week so it's all good. Thanks for making quality videos, I've watched quite a few of them.
@@robb3200 It is possible to replace the backlight fuse on the motherboard, and you can order the fuses online for less than 50 cents each, but you have to be very skilled with a soldering iron in order to not screw anything else up. For most people it's easier and less of a time waster to just replace the board, especially since you can sometimes find T430 boards for as little as $20.
Sebi's Random Tech that's why I opted for a replacement board and chassis haha. It was only £10 best offer on eBay too!
Hey buddy. Me again! So i did the mobo replacement and now there's no broke backlight, the screen lights up white though. Could boot into external linux usb on external display but the internal screen stays bright white. Just wondered if you'd seen this before? Could be the screen as it was already on its way out but I don't fancy blowing money on another screen to find out lol.
EDIT: reseated the display cable and it worked! Thanks mate couldn't have done it without your video on a loop.
Very handy that Sebi, cheers. I just swapped my board with the dGPU for the NVIDIA-free version with a Delta fan. Happy days! (quiet ones too, judging by the barely audible hum I've been hearing so far...)
Only thing I'd add is be careful getting the keyboard up using the slide method in the video if it is a bit 'stiff.' I broke the middle trackpad button pushing up. The old method of using a thin flat had screwdriver and gently applying pressure is better if the keyboard is resilient to a gentle slide up. Otherwise an excellent tutorial.
i rebuilt a 600e complete. main board processor sub card and both cases top and bottom took 45 minutes start to finish and worked as soon as power was turned on. Thinkpads are easy to fix.
Great video, thank you.
So I replaced the motherboard (wish I had found this video a few months ago) and the computer is powering up now rather than shutting off half a second after spinning the fan BUT with a black screen - no display whatsoever (even after stripped it off to bare bones - no wifi adaptor, no DVD, etc... whatever you can possibly imagine). Reseated the screen connectors, tried external and Fn + F7 still no signal - any wild ideas? Got the motherboard off ebay (allegedly) for the exact model... I am at a dead end. Appreciate your sharing of knowledge. Very determined to fix it... Thank you so much.
Can you still see something on the screen if you shine a light on it?
@@SebisRandomTech Hello! Thank you for the reply. I did try that as well, with the phone, with a flashlight - no luck, so far.
@@summerseefa2833 Make sure the display connector is inserted correctly.
@@SebisRandomTech let me reopen it this weekend and recheck them again. thank you, keep you posted
Thanks, Sebi. I got a blown backlight fuse here on my current board and got a new in box board on the way. Hope it's good after, I have a FHD controller on standby.
Very nice video & good clarity, Now my laptop have some problem I have given to laptop service center, how much cost it will come for the mother board model Lenovo ThinkPad T420. I want to buy online original one. kindly help me.
Thanks a lot ! I use this tuto to change my back a top case. i had to heat the touchPad to unstick it.
Hey sebi! I was wondering if you would be able to cover how to replace the T430 Lid Latch Hooks (the ones used to keep the lid clipped down). I've been trying to replace a broken one on my machine for a little while, but haven't managed to pull out the original hook from the lid. Do you happen to know how to fix this? I have not found any formal of informal documentation on this.
Thanks!
It's been a while since I've taken apart a T430 display assembly. I have a few spares that I would take a look at but unfortunately they are at my university's dorm which is currently locked down. When I have a chance I will definitely take a look.
@@SebisRandomTech awesome! I would really appreciate it! A video on it would be fantastic considering how the information on this is practically non existent.
take off screen bezel they are retained by that.
AWESOME vid Sebi!......I wonder....the T410 I had "repaired"?....isn't powering on or even showing signs of life....I'm wondering if I can do a MoBo swap myself....I think I will give it a shot! (Does anyone know if the T410 can take more than 8GB of RAM? usually the mfg says it maxes out at 8GB...but they said the same thing about the T420...and I've got 16GB in there!)
Because of a CPU or chipset limitation, the T410 and T510 are limited to 8 GB of RAM. The quad-core W510 does support 16 or even 32 GB of RAM.
As for your T410, make sure the battery is charged up. Sometimes I have ThinkPads that won't power on simply because the battery drained too low. (even when plugged in they won't power up, until the battery has been charged up)
@@SebisRandomTech Willgive that a shot. I haven't really touched it since it came back. Thanks for the info...I guess in regards to the RAM?...8GB will have to do, just hope that'll be enough to have PyCharm...CodeBlocks...and VSCodium to run smoothly and without glitches! Thanks for the info bro!
Hello, I just want to replace the USB/LAN port board. Do I need to follow these instructions to do that? Thanks.
It’s a similar process.
Sebi whats your opinion on upgrading to say i7 3610 or 3630 for t430? There appears to be split opinion over whether a fan upgrade is essential. For general use, ive not really noticed any impact with a standard toshiba fan and good mx4 thermal paste.
If it's working fine for you, I see no reason to make changes.
What is the voltage that passes through the power jack on the blue wire? Mine is running at zero volts, and my T420 does not turn on or turn on the green LED informing that the source is connected!
3:39 what’s the least amount of disassembly required to replace the power jack? Just the keyboard and palm cover?
I'd have to take a look, but at least that far for sure.
Hy sebi is there any way i can replace the bottom case without opening/removing the screen and main chasis
Sadly, nope.
Yes it can possible i just replaced my bottom case, you just need to remove the wifi card and heatsink then hole chasis with come off, you dont need to remove the screen and other part
hi i have a lenovo g710.and my problem is that all my usb ports and camera stop working,it happens at the same time i had black screen and motherboard beep sound after few seconds the laptop was back to work but with that issue... i already send it to 4 difrent shops from 2 difrent countries. still not fixed, they said new motherboard..is easier to just change the hole.. what you think i should do?
Thanks for the video!
I was hoping you were going to cover the serial numbers.
How do you think might be wrong if my adapter isn't charging my battery but instead only powering the laptop.? It's the charger? charging IC, or the motherboard.
Note: battery is new and fully functional tested on other thinkpad.
Thanks
What is the wattage of the power adapter? It could be that the system isn’t getting enough power.
65W It works before I got the problem few weeks ago after water spillage.
so what might be the problem ?
Sounds like you answered your own question. Seems that water may have damaged something that controls the power, or the heat/cool temperature differences were enough to crack a solder joint or two.
OK Thanks I will check it myself
Hi great video. I follow me most of your videos on upgrades. Very informative. For the T430 FHD and cable upgrade, could you advise the FHD display model/FRU to get. And also the cable. Thanks 😊
You have to purchase a 1080p upgrade kit from a site like eBay or Aliexpress. Simply search for "ThinkPad T430 FHD" or "ThinkPad T430 1080p" and look for an upgrade kit. As for the screen, some of the better choices out there are the N140HCE-EN1 (Rev C2 or newer, Rev C1 won't fit correctly), LP140WF3-SPD1, B140HAN01.1, B140HAN01.2, and B140HAN01.3. You shouldn't need to get a cable as the upgrade kit will come with them.
@@SebisRandomTech thanks and noted.
Sebi, I'm having problems with my t430 using dock 4337 with 2 additional monitors. The problem is, when running for some amount of time, the screen freezes and looks like a glitch (horizontal rectangular lines all over three monitors), can't do anything but reboot. I'm using a 90W charger with a dock. Didn't notice that without using the dock. Can you tell what could it be? Bad dock? Bad motherboard?
Try updating your drivers, if that doesn't work replacing the dock could help. I suggest that first since a dock is much cheaper than a motherboard.
I'm using linux, so drivers are in kernel, and it's up to date. I think it is the dock problem but will make sure to check with another dock. Tnx!
i followed your tutorial, but the bluetooth isnt working using the new motherboard (the old one died), is there a separeted module for the bluetooth adapter or is the pci used by the wifi?
It could be possible that you forgot to put the bluetooth module into your new board. It's a small module.
@@SebisRandomTech thanks for you reply, i just opened the laptop a couple hours ago and found the bluetooth module (4324a-brcm 1046), its near the touchpad and is connected to the touch pad that connect it to the motherboard, but it isnt recognized on windows, my hope to fix it is over, and i dont even know if the problem is with the module or the connection, if i knew i could just buy a new one :(
Thanks. I tried replacing the motherboard but the fan didnt work. Turns out I forgot about the heat sink
how about a reassemble video of t430?
can you make a video for t510i mother board sost? TK
Is the Ethernet port on a separate smaller PCB for easy replacement?
Yes.
Could I swap a T430S motherboard into a standard T430?
No, they are completely different boards and would not fit into the other machine's body.
I broke the keycap for the middle mouse/TouchPad button on the top. I'm selling my laptop to a friend, where do I get a new keycap for it
I have a spare t410, could I use that keycap
Is it a T430 keyboard or a T420 keyboard? If it's the latter then you can use the T410's button.
@@SebisRandomTech it is a t430 that Is damaged and I have a t410 and a t420 spare
@@Mudd.47 The T430 keyboard and trackpoint buttons are different than the T420 or T410 keyboard/buttons, so it would not be a perfect fit. You would have to grab buttons from another T430 keyboard.
@@SebisRandomTech thank you for responding! My friend decided to buy a gaming pc instead, so no worries
Hello Sebi. I recently purchased t430 motherboard from online shop. The board is in good condition and working with no problems. Only one issue is that i cannot get into the bios. If i press F1 for bios, it will just show me a blank screen. I tried many times and tried methods but to no avail. Please help me if you have ideas or tips. Thanks in advance.
Does it boot into Windows? If so see if applying a BIOS update through Lenovo Vantage fixes the problem.
@@SebisRandomTech it does boot to windows with no issues. I already uodated bios to 2.81 in windows 10 environment without problem. The only problem is i cannot access the bios. My screen just stay blank after i press F1 in boot....
@@jerryjohntorres5007 I don't know how I can help you there. I suggest consulting the folks in r/thinkpad, Lenovo's own forums, or the thinkpads.com forum to see if anyone can help.

Are there manufacturers to buy replacement mobos and parts for these?
eBay.
What's the motherboard part number?

Perfect. Thanks
Great laptop with low price
Wow!
Got lost with all the screws.
I found another reason to find a repair shop.LOL.
Hello sebi, can you please help me i accidentally drop my laptop which is the lenovo thinkpad t430 and i cant open it its says hdd error or problem can you please help me

Got the solution. there are 2 more screws on the back behind a tiny plastik. remove that plastik and you can just blop out the whole screenchassie
Sebi - can I substitute a motherboard from a T430s into my busted T430?
No, they're unfortunately completely different and won't work with each other.
I really wish they had not changed the keyboard design from the T*20 to the T*30. The smaller buttons on the 30's and up kind of suck.
BTW, nice video.
I think it's easier to get into Area 51 than to disassemble this model laptop.
Does this motherboard have an SSD port?
It has a WWAN card slot that can be used for an mSATA SSD, and the standard 2.5" drive slot.
Hey, can you help me? What to do when the screws don't want to screw lol. I'm pretty sure it's the right screws
Can I buy /trade you for dead board? If i fixed it ill tell you what it was failed🐴 Got. Any other( trash brand) dead mother 🐵 board machines?
I might have a few, but they are back at home while I am away at college. If I take a trip home I will consider sending them your way.

2:13 come on dude a bunch of the laptop isn't even in frame, and the whole left half of the frame is a bunch of miscellaneous crap on your untidy desk.
Thanks for the feedback! 😊
What an atrocious design. 0/10 for maintenance work.
Better than most laptops *cough cough Apple* that can’t be serviced at all.
Lenovo has some of the simplest and user serviceable designs. It's a shame all laptops makers do not follow this model.
