There’s a trick to using multichromes that works really well for me that I discovered by accident by swatching multis over a black primer and a white primer. You can force one color or the other to the forefront depending on the base color primer you use. So you can deliberately make one color prominent in, say, your inner corner by applying it over white primer and over black primer on the rest of your lid to feature the other extreme end of the shadow’s spectrum of color. Blend them in the middle to bring other colors from the spectrum to the forefront in the middle of your eye. Or use a gunmetal or charcoal cream eyeshadow stick all over as a base to get a really strong shift in all kinds of light. It’s all about that base. 😆

    • @montananerd8244
      @montananerd8244 7 місяців тому +3

Thanks for this! Light doesn't really reach my lids, so getting shift is impossible. I've been experimenting with how to get the brighter shade to show, but this one explained everything & i appreciate when people use color & art theory to explain.

This really does work. I have been doing it recently. I have nyx in black bean and cottage cheese and tried it out. I also test them over different mattes to see how they look.Hooded eyes mean you may have to work a little harder at using them.(my case) I also try to find a matte that compliments the shift. I take pictures of it so I can decide what to use.

Thank you so much for talking about odens eye quality! I also agree that they’re reasonably priced, but what drives me insane is how absolutely no one acknowledges the problems with their formula! I have at times wondered if influencers get different palettes than regular people get. I have major issues with hard panning, and shimmers not picking up. The wear time is not good and I think the mats are forgettable, and the artwork is just not my thing. But to hear people swear up and down it’s the best thing ever gets really annoying!

They allegedly took a creator off PR years ago because she gave them a bad review. I saw one shade hard pan on a creator years ago and she tries to sweep it under the rug. They have affiliate codes too. Some people don’t want to lose PR or codes is what I think. 😅 I know Teresa Is Dead and Katie Marie have given negative feedback recently, so I know some people have offered criticism of the products.

@@celestecelestial90same. Actually last year Annette and even A. Nyquist had to admit they had hard pan in their palettes but it was treated as no deal at all. Also few other folks who got it in PR like Katie Marie. You could see the hard pan too. And smaller channels that don't get pr do talk about issues too. It definitely is a batch problem! As when I compare palettes I have to others the problematic shades are not even the same! And what the issue is varies.

    • @exomake_mehorololo

@@biebsoholicit's definitely not just preference! It's clear quality issues. A dried out hard panned shimmer in a brand new palette is bad quality, a shimmer without binders that falls apart is a quality issue, shimmers with too much binder that feel and behave like glue is a quality issue, oil separating from shimmers is a quality issue. All of which happen w their palettes to plenty people including creators. It's lottery if you get the good or the bad palette

I love a good indie brand, I love a good duo or multi-chrome and I love Oden’s Eye but I also support that you don’t feel exactly the same way! There is no freaking way you’re too old or out of the loop. I watch you because you bring the energy and I enjoy your content!! I refuse to continue purchasing outrageously expensive palettes. The makeup industry is the only one I have watched get the market flooded and not have prices driven down. Basic economics doesn’t seem to apply and it’s a real head scratcher for me. I want a sale - a GOOD sale for the prices they are charging these days! I want an established company. I am not funding other people’s business ventures with pre-orders or insanely long fulfillment times. I am not buying into the limited edition / get it before it is gone forever and you miss out FOMO anymore.

I know I’ve said this before. I’m very selective on which indies I buy from due to bad customer service stories.
No, most small indie loving creators aren’t going to bring up bad customer service stories because they either never experienced it because they get everything in PR or the brands aren’t going to treat them poorly because of their platform. Also, they won’t bring up other people’s bad customer service stories to warn us because they either have some kind of para social relationship with the brand owner, are on PR or have affiliate codes so they gain financially if we buy and use their codes. They turn a blind eye or bad customer service stories fall on deaf ears because they have something to gain especially if they are trying to do UA-cam full time. I don’t trust most of their reviews so I go to people who I trust more or who bought it themselves and aren’t affiliated with the brands.
I’m also not going to pay $100 for a cheap packaging, ugly stolen AI design or clip art design, made in PRC palette with shadows that are probably going to start leaking in 6 months and may go bad faster for all I know. Palettes made in PRC especially private labeled ones cost so little to produce so I’m not paying big bucks for the mark up. I’ll get those palettes for $30 or less when they do the Black Friday Sales.
Small beauty UA-cam mostly feels like QVC now. I’m all for creators getting collabs, affiliate codes and sponsorships- but I also don’t have to buy or watch if I am not interested in what’s being pitched.

    • @exomake_mehorololo

For real 😅😅after watching YT for so many years and comparing so many channels: right now a lot of the small and midsize channels talk and behave EXACTLY like the big beauty gurus from 2016-2018... Nothing but PR, blatant selling including dishonest /biased reviews, influencer trips & events, cliques where everyone has the exact same opinion and reviews the exact same products like clones, only talking brands that send PR and not even knowing what other brands are out there, jumping on every trend like a leaf in the wind, buying ever more expensive stuff from luxury brands WHILE pretending how honest, relatable, diligent and normal and just like you they are... They really care about our money you know 😂🙄

    • @celestecelestial90
      @celestecelestial90 7 місяців тому

@@exomake_mehorololo I started watching the small beauty community back then because I got tired of all the QVC behavior of larger UA-camrs. The small creators back then used to talk bad and make fun of large creators who would always love all the PR and their pitch Morphe codes. There was even one made a video called “Why I Don’t Trust Beauty Gurus” which I think she took down, saying that she didn’t trust them because they are financially invested in the brands they feature. She also said she doesn’t like when indie brands do IP inspired palettes without paying the IP brand itself, but was radio silent when Unearthly did the same thing with the Aliyah Warms my Blood palette. 😂 I don’t find most of them genuine or trustworthy. I unsubscribed from most of them and I don’t watch every video of the ones I’m still subscribed to. Yes, none of them are our friends because we don’t know them personally; it’s just people we follow online who are selling things. But the sad part is the some people develop para social relationships with them and they blindly trust all their reviews or develop an unhealthy attachment to them. Everything they used to put down people like Jacklyn Hill and Manny MUA for doing, they are doing the same thing now, probably even on a more extreme level. 😅 They all love overpriced indies that they get PR and have codes with. Sometimes when they get things in PR, even the titles of their videos are the same, especially with Nomad palettes.,

I got burned once by buying a $65 collab palette from an indie brand no longer in business. She took 2 months to ship it and the quality was so bad that it looked like a 2nd grader made the shadows. I also wasn’t sure if it was made in a sanitary environment because of the condition and one shadow had an animal hair in it. That brand also never paid the creator for the collab and threatened to sue her which really rubbed me the wrong way. Eventually I just threw it in the trash and it made me more careful not to buy from them every popular brand out there.

I wasn’t a big fan of odens eye formula either, the art was much better than the formula. There are certain indie brands I trust and certain ones I just can’t bring myself to try. Especially when some of the palettes are over $100 now and I only like a few shades. I agree, I’d rather have singles from clionadh or another brand I trust even though some of those palettes look pretty. But I think it’s totally okay not to be the “indie brand channel” that doesn’t mean you are outdated or don’t have a place here.

I appreciate your honest and I’m with you on the not using creams. I bought one blush (Mac Glow Play so natural) and 2 bronzers. All were on sale because I was actually curious about those products. I think trying something when it interests you is the best way to shop. Trends come and go.
As for multichromes, I own maybe 5 between singles and 1 palette. I enjoy them, but I’m not seeking them out because of the prices.
I think Nomad has done this trend well. The Royal Europe palette had shifts that were the similar color families so they seem to shift more seamlessly. Their new palette has 2, but it wasn’t marketed with that forward from what I saw and it fit the theme of the palette. They kept the price under $60. I am biased because I love Nomad Cosmetics, but I do think they’ve done it well.

I thought you had a great variety of indie brands in your collection. I have many of the same brands. The cost is too much for multchromes and I have yet to buy. I’m also very particular with indie brands because some have very bad customer service. not all are created equally.

Thanks for saying out loud what I’ve been thinking lately about multi-chromes and the cost increases to indie palettes. I don’t mind one or two multichromes or duo chromes in a palette but they should be able to work well with most (if not all) the other shades. And the prices have gotten ridiculous. I’m on a no buy until April when I’m reassessing but thinking about my collection, I rarely use the multichromes and don’t need to pay insane prices to have every shimmer in a palette be one. I guess it’s the Pat McGrath effect? But I’m not overly impressed with her stuff either (although to be fair I’ve never owned or worked with her special shades). There’s also enough mark up in makeup that a brand should be able to run a business and expect to cover the cost of some spoilage. If they’re not writing that into their contracts with the manufacturers then they don’t know how to run the business properly. As consumers all we can do is set our limits and vote with our wallets.

I love this video and highly agree with you!
Oden's Eye, I only have Sea Talk and I think the color story is pretty, but the quality is just average. Shimmers hard-panned fast and the mattes weren't the greatest to blend.
Sydney Grace quality is fantastic, however I also find myself using Space Cowboy pretty much everytime I use it because the shimmers are more metallic than sparkly, and I need sparkle!
I'm usually not a fan of multichromes either, but I do love the duo/multichromes in the ABH Cosmos palette. They're sparkly, elegant, and ethereal. I was not expecting to like that palette as much as I do.

I agree about multichrome. I occasionally wear it, but I have a LOT of very collectible, old school multichrome nail polish. And the truth is, it does not show up on your eye the way it does on your nails.
I don't mind a shift in something (like that brown one with the green you see a lot), but the payoff is not there.
Plus, there are a limited number of shift combos, so they have to add so much different pigments.
Meanwhile it's expensive and the payoff isn't there. sorry for the repitition.
I remember when Theresa is Dead reviewed the two new Christmas palettes for Oden' Eye. She was really unimpressed with the one that had the holo shimmer. It was largely ignored. You could smell the "I've got a referral" from across the street.

I am somebody who loves multi and duo chromes. They speak to my inner magpie! I love looking at them. But……I never use them! I’m such a basic makeup lover that the things I reach for over and over are the classic Nars palette, MAC shadows, etc. I now have a huge collection of Indie singles but being in the uk there are only 3 brands I buy from! I am not prepared to pay the ridiculous shipping costs from over seas I die brands. I cannot agree more with what you said about the pricing. It’s ridiculous. Especially when you realise a lot of these companies private label. I got burnt buying from a US based indie brand I brought via Etsy. It cost me so much to get the palette here only to find out later it was private labelled from China. I love brands like Lethal Cosmetics, The Pastel Roses and Glam Shop because I can get them easily, they’re reasonably priced and I love the brand. I don't care if creators buy the newest viral product or follow makeup trends. I actually prefer it when a creator's collection fits their makeup style and is a unique assortment of products, instead of owning/using the same products anyone else is also using. I guess I just prefer seeing people use the makeup they actually enjoy.
I don't feel the same about multichromes, but I'm also not interested buying eyeshadow palettes with a lot of multichromes or holochromes in them. Mainly because I'm not a premade eyeshadow palette person. I like building my own palettes as well as mixing/layering shades to extend the versatility of my small single eyeshadow collection. A lot of multichromes seem to have similar shifts, so I only need a few iridescent/sheer-based multichromes that I can layer over my mattes and regular shimmers.
It's unfortunate that your reach is pretty minimal when you don't use popular brands or products, tho'. I rarely even mention products in my IG post. Most of the time they're discontinued anyway or the brand doesn't even exist anymore. I receive the most likes/comments/followers on my concept palettes or redesigns of popular brands like Natasha Denona, PMG or Blendbunny.

My thing with multichromes is that so many colors flip the same way. The Glaminatrix Rich Romantic palette is a palette full of neutrals that go from purple or pink to green, which means that it all looks the same. I will also look in the mirror and see that the eyeshadow has completely disappeared if it's a thin formula. I've gotten SUPER picky about it, so I have like one palette with multichromes that I enjoy all of them (BBB Basic Witch) and a handful of singles that I love. I actually feel the same way about multichromes in general, pricing of indie products, but mostly the issue of there not being support if something comes broken. My ND I Need A Nude palette came broken three times. If I spend money on something, I fully expect it to come the way I ordered it. And Ulta replaced it every time until it came unbroken. It isn’t my fault that the company is either not packaging correctly or making product that isn’t meant for shipping. I work hard for my money and I do expect a certain quality of service at the end of it. There are legal premises where the whole point of the law is to put someone in the position they were in prior to injury, whatever the injury was and however much that costs. And if a company can’t give me what I paid for, I am not interested in that company. It’s really as simple as that. I refuse to repress anything I didn’t damage myself. I’ve had things come all the way from Japan (back when I was collecting and they had an LE Dior powder I wanted) unbroken! Same for Europe. If those can come undamaged, then a company here is cutting costs somewhere.

A brand is supposed to price in returns and damages into their products. You cannot tell me that all the ingredients in a multichrome cost so much that there isn’t enough space for profit in an $80 palette for some returns or at least to send a new shadow for someone to pop into their palette (they should just make the palettes the kinds that can allow the popping in and out-which will add cost but that gets priced into the cost of the palette. We are already paying a small fortune).

I'm not 100% on multichromes either. I tend to prefer less 'rebel' formulas like duochromes, mostly because sometimes light hits them (either on my eyelids or my lips) and some shifts wash me out. For example I adore Emerald city from Ofra but the 'golden' shift for some reason makes it look like I have missed a point with the wand, like 'oh you didn't apply it evenly' and it drives me nuts XD BUT if I put that shade on top of a green lipstick, or a black lipstick, the effect is gone. I put multichromes on top of very smokey eyes too. But my creasy hooded eyes do not agree with multichromes most of the times, they crease way faster than any other eyeshadow I got. I have a pair of greens from Ve cosmetics and that's it. I'd say that for me they are for a special occasion when I have extra time to jump through hoops on fire to make them work for me, not everyday use. Like for wigs. XD

I respect your opinion about multichromes but I feel the exact opposite. It's probably because I have hooded eyes and I wear glasses. I feel like no one can see my eye looks so I need them to be extra sparkly and shifty.
I had a similar creasing problem yesterday using Pat McGrath Huetopian Dream, but I have watery eyes. I notice that when I talk a lot, my eyes start to water, which wreaks havoc on my eyeshadow. I don't know why. The first time I noticed it yesterday, I was able to tap my eyes to smooth it out, but eventually the shadow thinned out to where I couldn't smooth it anymore.
I also know what you mean about pricing. I purchased from Unearthly last year and all the palettes were around $35-$45. Now, they are higher than $60. I'm not paying that.

I can't get behind some of the foiled metallic shadows in palettes. I'm in my 40's, and they don't look good on me. They are so thick that they wind up looking crusty, and they crease. Sometimes I can tell by the swatches that a shadow will be like that, other times not. I get that people with younger eyes love this stuff, but it's been a waste of money for me. 😔

I thought I was alone… I’m not a huge fan of multichromes or from purchasing eyeshadows from indie brands. Some I can get behind but the majority of them are not for me. All of your reasons are the same reasons I have.

  • @MsCherribelle

I am not a fan. I have small hooded eyes, multi cromes are a waste because my lid is hidden most of the time. I also find that most indi super metallic shadows contain so much silicon that the shadow brunches and creases on my lids.

I think the Indie game has gotten way out of control! And I do enjoy all those different multi chromes and whatnot, but most of the time it’s too cost prohibitive for me! And the hype has become almost a turn off by now.
There is a reason so many “older” products are coming back on Tik Tok. They are timeless and classic. For example, the moon dust shadows. Those of us who have been wearing makeup and watching it for years have had them forever!!! I still have mine in old packaging. Us oldies feel you! I am never the trendy one and that’s ok 😅❤

I am a fan of multichromes and duochromes, but sometimes I just want a plain shimmer. I hate glitter, but I am happy for options. I think it shouldn't be a unsubscribe because you do not like them, that is childish.
I hate the Oden's eye formula and I think why everyone loves them is because PR and Codes! Oden's eye has great customer service and they ship fast for being out of the US.
I am a consumer of these indie palettes and the brands I buy from have never done anything shady - adept, Ensley Reign, and Fantasy Cosmetica are such good brands, but you should only buy what you want.
I watch people on UA-cam because they like makeup, I know what I like too and just here for community.
I am on a no buy and I want to use what I have instead of buy buy.

Sydney Grace is my ride or die brand. They’re eyeshadows, powder blushes, highlighters, and lip creams I use daily. Just great quality and color stories. Not a fan of Odin’s Eye fan. Too glittery. I bought Amanda’s Makeup just for fun and Lauren Mae’s collabs. Glad to support them, but would not purchase anything else from the brand. I do like Nomad and Blend Bunny, but Sydney Grace is my favorite brand.
I’m doing a no buy/low buy this year. Did not buy any makeup in Jan. Foundation is my weakness, can’t buy a new foundation until I use up 2 in my stash. I like the fact you are not a fan of trends. As soon as I like a trend, it’s outdated. I like watching people shopping their stash. I will watch new product reviews, but I’m feel burned out on beauty products right now. I have so much and when I see a product im interested in, I don’t get excited about it. I still like watching creators using makeup, but I like the fact I can watch them and don’t feel the need to go out and it. Hope this makes sense.

I don't actually think those indie brands are hip. Only in the indie beauty echo chamber... But the big beauty gurus of today aren't selling us multi chromes and small indie brands and definitely not the complicated eye looks we still see. It's all much more simple make up, lots of liners and whatever silly aesthetic got a new name.. But they're always easier and quicker to achieve looks I see getting the big views. There's also still enough channels who don't do indie at all but love mainstream make up... Or a lot of pure luxury channels too. So I don't think you're out of date 😅😅
