Habe Dank !
Yes, but it is an honour to hear him sing and especially this song which is one of the many that captures and portraits the Russian soul which just loves to suffer, and we, along with it. Thankyou Russia and you, the memory of Chaliapin, for making us clear what passion means and how it is sung. One of the old school. All honour and respect and love.
Some thirty years ago there was a shop called Caruso at New Oxford Road selling old vinyls where I bought some old record by singers of the beginning of the twenty century.. I don't know how many records I bought but I know that the one CHALIAPIN sings Och Chornie/Black Eyes made my day. I listened to the music 10 or 12 times repeatedly, I was not drank neither stoned, just the voice of the guy, and the way he sings the music. Since that moment Chaliapin became my idol. Forget Caruso, Domingo, Sinatra, Gardel, Vicente Celestino. when talking about singing the master of the masters is Chaliapin.
This song was famous in my childhood in Turkey. The irony is Russia-and Turkey were on opposite sides during the Cold War. Music doesn’t care about border. Just like Lili Marleen.
Gokhan Sayram Not only during the Cold War were your two nations on opposite sides. The antagonism goes back a few hundred years, as I have read. But curiosity about the 'enemy', who is just like us in so many ways, is extremely common. Here in North America (including Canada, where I live), there was deep suspicion toward the Soviet regime. Nevertheless Russian culture and Soviet musical artists especially were held in great respect, almost awe. I knew a number of emigrants from the USSR, and they were perfectly normal people, if perhaps a little damaged by their experiences under totalitarian rule. Chaliapine himself didn't stay very long in Russia after the 1917 revolution, although I'm not aware that he opposed it. Many who left to return years later were executed or sent to Siberia. Maybe they were accused of being too friendly with the 'enemy'.
People of the countries are not on opposite sides. They r misguided from some few rich people who want to become richer by creating wars and making innocent people kill each other for nothing.
it is impossible to chose 'the greatest' in any field and area.. Having said that - Chaliapin was perhaps the greatest singer. And those who don't understand Russian, never thought I'd say that, do miss a lot. His Boris Godunov is an one-of-a-kind phenomena, a singularity, nothing I have heard in my long life compares to it. He is not just a great singer, he is a genius musical artist.
Great Russian singing. The problem as I hear it in other performances is that the Russian comes through in everything. Can't deny that Chaliapin was tops. Thanks for posting.
The Caruso of basses indeed... wouldn't that have been the greatest duet in recorded opera at the time? May have even given him and Ruffo a run for their money.
@Mumsilius Maybe because there is no such title? In the end it comes to the emotions of th voice which are so different between Shalyapin and Siepi ...
Goes sometimes like this: Very black, very passionate. You, I love it so much, I sing it to you like that. I’ll never wish to see an eye for a year. Here are the black sounds of flames, and the country’s hired men let her chase her love, where there is no suffering, where doctors meet. I didn’t meet you. I’ve been suffering. I’d live a life of smiley people. You’re like you took me away from the advice, really black. You’re so black and beautiful, like love. Love, how do you say it? I saw it.
Go into Google search, type in " lyrics to dark eyes in russian " which will then lead you to the Roman Italics print which will also lead you to the English version and translation. Go into Wikipedia and get it's history and for next time you don't know what to do, or are just plain lazy, teach yourself how to think and apply your own energy to achieve something for self gratification instead of sapping someone else!
@Mumsilius They have tottaly different voice colors (and styles, emotions!), yet maybe Siepi does sound more technically articulated, darker, lower, even more manly, but a true test would be to hear them both live, in their time. That would be, no doubt, a fascinating experience.
CHALIAPIN was TATAR (not Ruzzian) Feodor Chaliapin was NOT Ruzzian but a Tatar from Kazan in Tatarstan. Ruzzia has claimed so many, and deceived historians, but perhps not any more. Tatarstan, officially the "Republic" of Tatarstan, invaded and ruled by Ruzzia. Its LANGUAGE was TATAR, but now also Ruzzian. Author of DARK EYES was UKRAINIAN poet Yevhen Hrebinka. (NOT Ruzzian) Dark Eyes is a Gipsy romance song with lyrics written by UKRAINIAN poet YEVHEN HREBINKA, first published in 1843.
Well, I suppose it would be inappropriate to say God bless Putin ( lower case print.) although there is very little that differentiates the good and God from the Word.

That voice just pours out like pure gold.
Thanks for posting Dark Eyes by my grandfather! Great recording.

what control; so genuine, so natural. beautiful tembre. why is it so rare, voices like that? I mean, like once in a century or two.
There are always great voices but a complete dearth of adequate teachers
My favorite recording of Chaliapin.

Turkey gave help to Russians who escaped communist Russia after 1917. Shaliapin was Russian emigrant.
You are lucky you didn't become commies 😅

I think Leonid Kharitonov is better
@@kptlt.phillipthomsen5973 Kharitonov is great, but Chaliapine was on another level, he was one of the very greatest basses that ever lived
C'est sublime !

I was just as amazed as the others here. Thank you. Also I note that Chaliapin sings with the chorus, which is interesting.

+Oleg Rasputin
Yuri Kuldoshin

SHAALYAPIN IS KING OF RUSSIAN OPERA SINGERS !!!!
@Mumsilius Maybe because there is no such title? In the end it comes to the emotions of th voice which are so different between Shalyapin and Siepi ...
I'd like to know who that bass is in the chorus who hit a low C or B in the last chord...
Probably some member of the Don Cossacks.
Wow! That was something!
octavist bass...tradizionale ortodox

Really Caruso of Basses.

Caruso was "shalyapin" of tenors, for further realism.
I have the same type of voice but I never will sing like that.
DAS WUNDER SCHALJAPIN
