Tried to buy from the store but couldn’t complete the purchase without consenting to receive junk emails. It’s a pity because the theory poster is amazing !
I always had a hard time figuring out the angle and managed to only do it on the G string and only at certain frets, but this helped a lot. Within minutes got it working anywhere and on any string.
Intermediate guitar player here trying to learn these, they weren't clicking with other videos and as soon as i watched this one and started practicing i got my first squeal in 5 minutes, thank you so much!
The Guitar Gods are looking down on you my friend. Eddie Van Halen has taken pity upon you and said, My son i will send you the secrets YOU'RE BLESSED MAN
SamJam my man, THANK YOU! I’ve been struggling with this for an entire year and watched countless videos that are 10+ minutes explaining, then I find this video and did it on my first try! Thank you!
This helped me understand what I need to work on more than any other video I've watched over the last couple of days. Thank you so much for making this video!!
I just want to THANK YOU because all the other ‘just let it lightly touch the side of your thumb’ videos just weren’t cutting it! I can finally do it!! ❤
The cat comment is accurate, I have one cat that protests every time I play, if she isn't she is locked in a closet somewhere. This was the best explanation, I have watched a dozen videos and had zero results, but with your tips, I can now do it, thanks!
The explanation that drove it home for me was this: "Pick the string and drive your thumb through the string by rotating your picking hand 90 degrees". If done correctly you'll get a perfect harmonic every time if played in the correct position. For my guitar, the easiest position is just behind the neck pickup (I believe this is a 5th interval). Yes, high gain is also important.
Thanks mate, this was verry helpfull. Had no idea the position changed the tone. I always pinch and then try to bend it till it sounded correct. (total beginner here, so i have absolutely no clue on certain things)
As a 55 year old I picked up a guitar about 2 years and it has been a very slow process , I have time because I'm retired , but feel like I haven't really progressed much. The lessons you put out are great the 3 biggest problems I have are picking faster , theroy , and how to play what I feel and make it sound good. Thank you for making it affordable, and taking time to answer , questions.
No problem! you can achieve quite alot on the guitar in the first 5 years (especially if you have time) the key is sticking at it. Feel free to ask any specific questions you may have over on Patreon and I will do my best to help! 👍
Unless 12 frets above the fretted note lies over the fretboard! in which case you would half the distance again from this point and produce a 2nd octave harmonic.... these are much more common👌
When I was a kid and trying to figure out how to do harmonics without any instruction, I noticed that sometimes when I had my fingers curled to hold the pick that my ring finger would sometimes not be tucked all the way into my hand and the finger nail would touch the string at the same time as the pick. That quickly became my way of turning the pinch harmonics on or off very consistently... with my ring finger lowering from my closed picking hand like airplane landing gear. It was probably 2 or 3 years later when I found out most people choke up on the pick and use the fleshy part of their thumb, which feels completely alien to me after learning my way. ☮❤🎶
Yup! There are certainly lots of ways to achieve a pinch harmonic and I can imagine if you have always used a specific method it would be hard to change it!
Wow, I've played guitar for like 10yrs (though done extremely little pinched harmonics in that time) n was just watching a video where a guy was learning a riff n said "oh a pinched harmonic, but I can't tell which one..", and I was like "what? There are different kinds??", then looked it up/found this n I'm blown away that I've never known that their sound changes depending on where you pick! I learned a song by ear awhile back that had a single pinched harmonic n I just eventually gave up on figuring it out n played a normal note since it just never sounded right to me, and I'm finally seeing why that is lol! The videos that I watched about them when I first started playing never mentioned this damnit- I always thought I knew everything there was to know about them!
Amazingly short and sweet video. Any advice for low e string pinches especially around the low end of the fretboard. This seems to be my only problem area.
it should work exactly the same! just make sure the thumb rotation/angle of take off/pick-up selection are all as described in the video and it certainly can help to have more gain!
For what seemed like forever, i used to get pinch harmonics every so often, but had no idea how i was getting them. I eventually did figure it out. Now i can get them without a pick on a classical guitar.
I've watched all your videos. You are an excellent teacher. I wish the channel development. It would be great if you could share your knowledge on how to compose songs. Thanks!
This is the first video I’ve seen that shows you how to HOLD the pick instead of just saying “Yeah, just brush the string with your thumb or nail.” Thank you.
Interesting, didnt know that the actual position on the string for picking mattered to produce different notes, ive always been told to try and look for a sweet spot but not that it could produce different intervals 😮
Cool , I've got Dime bags down but I'll get this too . When my dog or my wife see me getting a metal guitar plugged in she starts crying like it hurts . So No harmonics practice unless I'm alone and I love to do this stuff all day 😊
Just to add some information: The main reason why you should select the bridge pickup is that essentially you are suppressing some of the string‘s many wave movements with your thumb, so when the place where you pick and „pinch“ is near the middle or neck pickup - which it is most of the time - then there is almost no string vibration happening close to your pickups and you won’t hear the harmonic clearly.
In that particular Patreon video I was actually using the Tone King Imperial MKII foundation preset from Neural DSP (amp simulator plugin). You could get very similar results with overdrive from a tube amp with both reverb and a small amount of delay in the effects loop. You could also try dialling in a similar tone with a modeler style amp such as the BOSS KATANA, simply get an overdriven sound that slightly breaks up when you play harder and add reverb and delay to taste! hope that helps👍
Brooo. I was playin my guitar, and i was messing around and was play a weird pitch harmonic and they played a note around 17 sec mark and i thought it was comeing through my amp lol... i am trying to find a video on how to tap but make harmonics on the frett hand

Excellent!...hope you watched the rest anyway😂
the production value of this video is off the charts
thanks!

Wow, thanks!
Honestly, I was telling my instructor that I am struggling with this 8 hours ago and this video pops up 🎉
Awesome! let me know how it goes after this video!

i was playing some metal in drop a and tried to hit the pinch, i actually hit one perfectly.
so now i got the motivation again to actually learn it.
Glad to hear it👍
This is one of the best video tutorials on YT. Nice work

I really didn't realise how easy they were until I watched this!! Thank you so much! Will definitely be using these in my playing a lot more now!
Have fun!
Awesome! This video works the best out of all the technics I have tried, absolutely amazing!!!!
Glad it helped!
Most useful video regarding the subject. Thanks a lot 🙏
Thanks!
Thanks for the tips, now my loved ones accompany my harmonics with gutural screams everytime i practice 👍
Then my work here is done.
This is way more sophisticated than i thought😵💫
Literally talked about this in a guitar lesson I took yesterday. Thank you!
That's awesome! Thanks for watching 👌
Struggling for years with this so jelly watching everyone else. This finally helped. OMG you are a champion. Thanks!
No probs!
Really clear with excellent graphics. Bravo!
Thanks👌
I am a beginner and in less than 5 minutes i got my first ever pinch harmonic with this tutorial, now it's time to get them consistent, thanks a lot!
Great!
subscribed and push notifications on for your next ten videos at least. I'm grateful for this video. thank you.
Awesome! Thanks, it's very much appreciated!
me watching this with only an acoustic guitar…..
You can play artificial harmonics on an acoustic guitar!... they just don't sound as impressive..give it a go👌
I’ve been playing almost two years and didn’t know this. Thank you.
no probs! thanks for watching!
Loved it! Thanks for this detailed guide my man!
Any time!
Never knew about the halfway picking location. Fascinating
Thank you, i didn't know the thing of octaves
It's useful to know👌

Best and easiest explanation for how to get them Squeely Dans.
Squeely Dans! Love it!! I'm 'steeling' that one👌

all sounds good! and yes that would be the 5th interval!

12 frets above fretted note is the sweet spot. Harmonics came very naturally for me, though I didn't know why...
Unless 12 frets above the fretted note lies over the fretboard! in which case you would half the distance again from this point and produce a 2nd octave harmonic.... these are much more common👌
Cool! You should try mathcore/rock!
The 1/2 harmonic is the easiest to play after all... but I think 1/4 sounds better
Best explanation I've watched. Another video just said in front of the pup and didn't explain octaves. Awesome can't wait to try.
awesome! thanks!!

Many thanks!!
This is the video that made it click for me. Thank you
Fantastic!
Omg I did it thank you
No probs! Have fun👍
I didn't even start training and my neighbors are throwing poop at my window already. What do?
sit tight..backup is on the way... I can only apologise.
You pinched one off and you're neighbours sent you one they pinched off😅

For what seemed like forever, i used to get pinch harmonics every so often, but had no idea how i was getting them.

Great! I will be releasing a video on how to achieve pinch harmonics with no pick soon!
@@Samjamguitar This was back probably before UA-cam creators were out of diapers (1981 or so).
A lot harder to learn back then.
@codemonkey2836 for sure! Definitely more difficult pre youtube etc..however a lot of benefit to working out things for yourself👍
o ÚNICO video do youtube que me ensinou a fazer harmônicos
Glad the lesson helped!
I guess i just learned it by accident, knew about the thumb part also but never thought that there was a science as to where to pick..
its good to know!
Respect
Yup. Gain and treble tone allow you to access the higher harmonics of the note.
Definitely! Not essential but it certainly helps👌
I've watched all your videos. You are an excellent teacher. I wish the channel development. It would be great if you could share your knowledge on how to compose songs. Thanks!
Thank you very much! That subject and more will come soon! Be sure to turn on all notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any uploads!
If you wanna get really good at picking out the location of the harmonics, practice that one riff from Magma by Gojira.
perfect
Ta!
this actually taught me how to play pinched harmonics. tysm
Awesome, glad it helped!
This is the first video I’ve seen that shows you how to HOLD the pick instead of just saying “Yeah, just brush the string with your thumb or nail.” Thank you.
Much appreciated!!
The angle of a plane taking off? Ahahahah. That was funny
Interesting, didnt know that the actual position on the string for picking mattered to produce different notes, ive always been told to try and look for a sweet spot but not that it could produce different intervals 😮
Alternative title: how to slipknot
Or pantera
@@PanteraFan-c6mmaybe even more so pantera cause that’s kinda what dimebag is known for
pinch harmonics is not just exclusive to just slipknot , god damn
@JupiterKnight ik but it's a common technique in slipknot. I'm not that naïve 😭
I was getting some pinch harmonics the other day on the high E string on my nylon string classical guitar. Funny pings.
Sacrilegious🤣
@@Samjamguitar I know… I touched a plectrum to the sacred nylon strings. 🫣🥹
🤣
Now that its out there, look for it on an upcoming Al Di Meola album 🎵
Cool , I've got Dime bags down but I'll get this too . When my dog or my wife see me getting a metal guitar plugged in she starts crying like it hurts . So No harmonics practice unless I'm alone and I love to do this stuff all day 😊
😂 I recommend headphones.
Actually that occured to me and I found my headphones after forgetting where they were for over a year . Happy family 🙂

I first discovered this technique from Robbie Robertson of The Band. Check it out on The Last Waltz.
best tutorial doesn't exi...
So that's where that sound comes from. Does this work on bass?
Any stringed instrument👌
@Samjamguitar Thanks, can't wait to try it out
Awesome 👌 thanks for watching!
dude the thumbnail just explained it to me
Job well done then.
Now you are on your way to joining a Pantera tribute band!
🤘🤘
"Squankin" - Billy Gibbons
🇺🇸
pitch harmonics can be played up stroke, thats a bit different technique
That’s crazy!
@@JohnnyArtPavlou novway )) its easy, just needs some practice
I will be making a video on that soon!
Well this covers step one, now I need to grow a giant beard, and go get myself some cheap sunglasses.
😂😂😂
Awesome, I’m going to annoy the dogs later 👍👍🤠🎸
Excellent.
2:31 nice pun
as a beginner iv found plucking an open string and doing vibrato an easy way to pinch harmonic. is this fine or would you consider it a bad habit?
2:41 PRACTISE

bro really sounds like the guitar teacher from guitar hero world tour
Thanks for the tutorial
Maybe I am...
I learned all that stuff from listening to Billy Gibbons.
I want to do it on a box guitar can I do it
Might not sound great, but sure! Why not?
Wow
Best practice for this is Gojira's Magma
It would have been nice to have this video like 14 years ago when I was trying to learn to do this. Now I don't play anymore and feels bad.
Well don't wait another 14 years! Dust off the guitar and get back on it!!
And to play on upstrokes?
Same technique but Reverse the angle... I will show this in an upcoming video👌
What's the background song?
