    That must of been the easiest catch you ever had! No ladder climbing, no wall ripping, no thorns, no super heat wave, no storms heading your way. Just a sweet family looking for a home for some bees.

    Ron, you can vacuum any swarm, I just prefer to shake them, more fun! Depending on what's out in the field just bare in mind you will leave some behind if you don't come back after dark.

    JP, would there be anything wrong with using a Bushkill Beevac on such a swarm? A guy could still inspect the frames in the vac box for the queen. Sometimes it's not always possible to come back later in the day to pickup the box so doing a swarm grab-and-go would be helpful. Thanks for another great video!

    JP, I have moved a swarm from our tree and now have them in a vacuum box with a new hive box on top, but the ball of bees have yet to move into the box. Was going to remove the hive box and shake the bees into the new hive box, like you have done in the video, but I am afraid I will lose the queen. Is that possible? Thanks in advance on the advice.

    So are all the honey bee types this calm when they are in a swarm, do the africanized ones stay calm like this when swarming. There big deal is over aggressive in defense but like you said in the video they have nothing to defend so would make sense even the mean guys would be more forgiving.

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  9 років тому +3

      Mr. GeforcerFX Not all swarms are created equal & that would go for European as well as Africanized bees. Both can light you up at times. I know people who have housed africanized swarms but to have them become increasingly wicked as the colony matured.

    why do honey bees leave their old hives and swarm?

    • @darringould2732
      @darringould2732 9 років тому +4

      Reasons. Supercedure! A typical Hive will house 40,000-60,000 Bee's. When the bee's run out of space within the hive, they instinctively start to develop new Queen Cell's and begin the process of building new queens. This more or less...Signals the Old Queen to leave the hive. The Old Queen departs with half of the Worker Bee's within the hive. She usually ends up on the branch of a tree or bush. All the Workers gather honey before departing. they need these stores to keep the swarm fed...while the Scout's go out searching for a New Home. (ie) Hollow Tree, Wall of a Building or other large space with a minimal entrance they can defend. Scouts will return to Swarm with instructions to new location. A swarm can last for a few hours or a few days. They quickly disperse to the new location and with the remaining honey stores...start to build new wax comb so the Queen can begin Brooding a New Colony! Back at the old hive...the remaining worker bee's and nurse bee's are producing new queens to run the former colony! this is just Nature's Way to increase their numbers!

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  9 років тому +5

      Sarah joseph, coming out of winter entering springtime, it is about propagation. Down here in southeast, Louisiana reproductive swarming begins late February/early March and continues into early May, when congestive swarming begins. Congestive swarms ocurr when there is an abundance of nectar avaiable and to their demise, bees overload the brood chamber, whereby her royalness literally runs out of room to lay eggs. The colony's reaction to this dilemma is to swarm, thus alleviating this imbalance. FYI, workers consume some of this honey which allows them to build comb at the new site.There are other reasons bees swarm as well: ants, predators, comb collapsing due to intense heat, etc...

    • @darringould2732
      @darringould2732 9 років тому +3

      JPthebeeman Yes...that too would occur in a warmer climate such as Louisiana. I'm just referring to my own situations here in Ontario, Canada. May/June is our usual swarm period!

    Wouldn't a solution to swarming be to put them in larger boxes, jp?

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  9 років тому +1

      Sean Gorman Keeping them busy is the key, regardless of the equipment they are in. The queen always needs room to lay her eggs or red flags go off, having the colony gear towards swarming.

    Beeman, please don't mess with your down to earth original way of talking about the bees. The music, white black variation etc. takes away from your presentation. The new location and the people you meet along the way, draws the interest. What I'm trying to say is, "You are what makes your video". From one of your regulars in Minnesota.

    JP! You are not going to believe this, but I just hit a video thinking it was one of yours, but it was this guy called 628dirtrooster. He was called to a bee yard where these two massive bee hives in two huge pine trees had established. they shot ropes up over the branches ,pulled his truck up under each hive, put a queen in 28 deeps and jerked on the branches and made the bees fall down on the boxes. They had so many bees that it completely filled all of the boxes and they had bees falling on the ground in piles! They said that it was the worlds unofficial record for swarm shakes. I was just telling you that I was waiting for you to get a million bees and I have to wonder how many bees will fit in a deep?
