My name is Maegan Woodin, and I'm a professional dancer, choreographer, teacher and student. I have danced for MTV, Diana Ross, Marc Jacobs and have appeared in many music videos. You can find more information about me and my career, as well as photos and videos, at www.dgtnyc.com. I'm going to be talking to you about ballet. The five basic positions of ballet are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.
So first position is when your toes are apart and your heels are squeezed directly together. A lot of people try to turn out the toes too much, and this creates stress in the knees, so follow your natural turnout line, and stand fully supported, very tall, making sure you're not rolling onto the inside of your foot, or rolling to the outside. Make sure that your feet and your weight are directly over and centered onto your toes. And then your arms are going to be like a round beach ball, and you should have your arms directly in front of your belly button not too high and not too low so directly in front of your belly button, your chest is open and your shoulders are down and you are engaging your back, and you stand in first position.
Second position, your arms and legs are out to the side, and you actually want to gauge the length of your second position by putting one toe next to your heel, then opening it up, and then extending it a little further. you shouldn't have too wide a second position, or too narrow, because you wont be fully supported when you're moving around in that position. Second position arms are rounded and slightly forward, you dont want to throw your arms too far back, so keep them nice, round, and forward, and that's second position.
Third position is used on a very basic level. It is when you are practicing to get to fifth position. You want to put your heel in the centre of your foot, and stand with both feet firmly on the ground, feet turned out. Your arms are going to come one high above your head and one directly to the side. Make sure that both arms are rounded and that your chest is lifted and your neck is long.
Fourth position, your leg comes out, and your heel is going to try to become in front of that toe, and your arm is going to be coming in front of your belly button. We want to make sure that your fourth position is not too wide, just like second position, and not too narrow. You want to have a pretty narrow fourth position, which will help you when you do turns in the centre.
Fifth position, both arms are up very high, and your chest is open, shoulders down, and your feet and heels are going to be connected. You don't want to try to squeeze your turnout and make both feet and heels connected fully, you want to follow the natural line of your turnout, and make sure that when you pliet, your knees are going directly over your toes.
So standing in fifth position, your arms are going to go all the way up, like this, and thats high fifth, and then low fifth, your arms are down here. - Навчання та стиль
I started ballet when I was 23 years old you're never too old or too young for ballet.
I am 23 now too! Nice to know that :)
Amanda Prewer I like your spirit..I really love ballet although Im not in a ballet class
can I ask your suggestions ? let me tell my Story
When I was 4-5 I studied ballet. Then i go to Islamic school. I have to wear a hijab right ? But... If I take off my hijab I'll get sin. Now I'm 12 years old. And I want to learn ballet again. I can't wear hijab in ballet right ? If I wear hijab then I'll have to wear a clothes that not tight. Ballet always wear a tight clothes. But... If I take off my hijab I'll get sin.
I love ballet. I really appreciate your reply. Thank you
Salma Nabilara Hi, what country do you live at? I think I might not be the best person to give a suggestion as I am not a Muslim but I am living among Muslims and in a Muslim country. I think it is kind of depend. There are many Muslim actresses or younger generation don't wear hijab during normal occasion. But they will wear when going to Mosque, school or maybe dinner. And some start wearing frequently only after marriage. Even our First lady only wear in religious function or important dinner etc. My opinion is, it's fine to not wearing hijab but your heart and faith are always in the right direction and to your God. And I think you can still wear hijab for ballet I think... there are some customized hijab that is tight and for sport. I remember seeing a swimsuit with hijab from somewhere too. Search around, ask your fellow muslim friends, talk to your parents and ask their views. Just don't give up on your dream and passion, and find ways. All the best in your life :)
I started dance when I was 7. I am 9 right now.
Hi. Im a guy and I started at 30. Have a degree in Russian Civilization which led me to love ballet. I still use it as simple exercise at 66. I’m not very good but I’m in great shape for my age. It’s a great complement to the gym.
I got to work in Russia and have seen the Bolshoi snd Marinsky.
I LOVE Maya Plisetskaya the Prima Ballerina Assoluta of all time wished I had see her. Perfection!
Check out her work if you’ve not seen it. 👍🏼
I'm.almost 30 and I started a month ago!Iam so excited!
How wonderful to see the Bolshoi and Marinsky Ballets.
I'm starting at 30 too, I just went to my first ballet lesson tonight. I'm very intrigued by it, the amount of coordination it takes is impressive, any exercise that involves balance seems very beneficial for us.
Thankyiu. I turned 32 last month and i was thinking if i am being crazy, but i think ill start
I'm an old dancer as well brother.. . Keeps Me limber.. I love ALL dance.. My friends can't believe how young I look.. Lol 💀✌️❤️😎😉👍👍
I took my first ballet class when I was about 4. My teacher didn’t like that I couldn’t do the splits and anything like that which obviously made me feel like I shouldn’t be there. Not once did she try to help me in anyway which quickly lead me to quitting within a week.
I’m now 15 and want to try ballet again. I’m more confident and I want to see how far I can go :)
I’m staring at 17 now 😭
I started at 2-3. I’m glad my mom thought it would suit me because it does and I love it. I miss it a lot though since I quit because of school but I used to do tap jazz and ballet. Ballet was always my favorite because of how beautiful it was. I miss it a lot
I started at three
I've been in ballet since I was 3. I never grew out of it. I love it, and it is a part of my life. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't do ballet.
That's literally me!!
This is me but the diffrente is that i can't do ballet 💔
A quick question , does the ballet shoe change the structure of your foot , because i really want to learn ballet but i am worried about this
I started at three aswell. I quit though but I miss it and it was my life
I want to do ballet but I’m 13, should I start
Hi Abigail, the younger, the better - as your body is more flexible the younger you are. Younger people have also not developed some of the bad posture habits that most people gain with age. Your body also learns quicker (muscle memory) starting at a younger age. Make sure that you have a good instructor - poorly teached ballet can hurt you. Enjoy, Ciao, L (Ballroom dancer since age 15)
Definitely!!! You can start learning the basics at youdance.com. Then learn choreography and follow along dances too! Good luck :)
Yes you can I started ballet at 10 your never to young to do ballet
Yes
Yes! I’m 13 and I’ve just started ballet and you are never too old to start. Just be aware that if you do start there is a lot of catching up 😀
it's never too late! I'm 23, male and never did anything relating to dancing. Ballet is great!
i took ballet one when i was really little, but now i'm starting back at level three with girls who have all done it before xo this is mega helpful, i'm basically binge watching everything there is to learn for ballet haha
that is what im doing too i started when i was 7-8 but then i quit and im rejoining level 2 lol
Okay, so I'm almost 16 and I'm starting to teach myself ballet, and I was wondering if it wasn't necessarily a bad thing? I mean, most people say that you should start pretty young, but I couldn't for various reasons, and I always thought I could never be a dancer because of that. Is this the case, or will it just be harder for me and take longer for me to acheive?
It's never too late to teach yourself how to dance! You just have to practice hard, because everyone starts at some point :)
don't worry about it you'll do great
I'm 14 and I just started and it is great. Just don't give up
Thanks for the negative comments
Erica Beardsley im 11 and im just starting, dont worry about it, if you really love it youll work super hard :)
Once she finished the second position i forgot the first 😂
Sarebear same 😂
Same so I see the video 3 times
I thought I was the only one 😭
Lol my exact memory
Yesterday I took my first ballet class! I'm 21. Just do it :)
0:32 first position
1:19 second position
1:50 third position
2:12 fourth position
2:34 fifth position
I’m so excited to get dancing again. I truly love dance!!
Thank you very much for all your video lessons. All the very best!!!
I'm 14 and I always wanted to start ballet. But since my bones are not flexible, it always discourages me. But now I'm ready and trying
Girl same! I’m also 14 and trying!
This is really helpful:) thanks alot!
These videos are very good. She is very precise in her explanations with no frills which is very helpful to a beginner! Thanks!!
Uh, 43 soon, just started ballet, and loving it. I am naturally quite strong, my body shape menifests nothing about ballet, but love my instructor and enjoying this disapline so very much. Not everybody needs to be a professioanl! It is a great addition to my life!
Thank you so much, this video helped me a lot!! ❤️
I did ballet for as long as i remember so my neighbor never did ballet I should her this video and she learned the positions when I teach her it doesn't work but thank you for teaching her the simple positions.
I am so excited😊
Luv the videos thank you
Thank you for your time! 💚
I had to relearn ballet for musical theatre but it was months ago and I can barely remember it now. I plan to start going to classes outside of college soon, but it's nice to have this helping me remember the basics.
I’m 22 looking to expand my creativity with a new style. This is great thanks!
When I was a kid I really wanted to dance we didn’t have the money for lessons and everything we still don’t lol I’m never going to dance seriously but it’s cool to learn what I wasn’t able to and it’s fun to move 😃
A chiropractic adjustment video mentioned "third position", and here I am. Great video.
I started about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I really suck. These are helping me so much thank you

Thank u so much
Perfekt!!! It is easy.
I’ve been dancing since I was three(with the same company) and when I was eleven my teacher had me practice pointe since I was ready for it but I sadly couldn’t go to the test or last years class, this year I can I’m also thirteen now so I feel I have a more of a chance to pass the test and be able to do pointe.
As someone who is going to start ballet classes in one month, I am very worried that I am unable to open my feet that much, is that natural or do you have to train for that?
+Mukmoon I imagine it's much like yoga in that your body will gradually become more able to hold these positions -- it will just take time and practice.
hey just wondering have you started yet? is it good?
KeeganismeltingHALP! Yes I started a month ago, actually my ballet teacher told me that you get that flexibility by training and stretching your muscles. As a beginner my first classes have been mostly of stretching and balance exercises. I have to tell you, the first classes have been very frustrating because it is very hard.... but for each class I feel that I have improved and I enjoy it more every time, I am in love with ballet and I think I will never leave it :)
+Mukmoon cool! i've been thinking about doing it but wasn't sure i might do it if you say its fun ☺ thnxs!
KeeganismeltingHALP! I was scared of trying because I am an adult already and maybe it was too late, but you only live once so do not give up opportunities, if you want to do something you should try it out, if you don't like it at least you will be happy because you tried. Hope you have fun!
👍very nice 👍 I love it 🙂
Love ballet dance

How old are you
Love from India😘
Just get rid of the subtitles for those who can't see her feet.
Singapore Kor exactly
Singapore Kor thank you
I don’t even have any subilities
It’s their own fault for even having subtitles ahahaha they can turn them off for a moment
why do you think people have subtitles on in the first place?
So i've been dancing my whole lofe but my studio isn't quite good so never in my life i've been teached how to do correctly these. I wanted to ask if in 5th position your front leg should be fully extended, or should it be a little in flexion?
I cant to it and ive gone to joffrey summer intensives school of the arts and been taking ballet since i was three my teacher legit pulls my feet back i physically cannot do it and now my knees hurt 24:7
Am I the only one that can see her feet?
+Britney&Ashlyn_ MCPE I would rather see the feet than the words and her head. It is possible to move the words to a higher spot but it already has thousands of views so what is the point. I will keep looking on other UTubes
+Judy Miller Uhmm....ok?
Thank you! that is better display.
I can see her feet
I can
everyone else has been doing ballet since they were young, but i’m just starting ballet now so i can be on the competitive jazz team haha😅
Did ballet as a kid, but wanting to get back into it is going to be so hard ;-; but im determined 😆
How’s that going for you? It’s been 6 years, update?

I started ballet when I was 5 and I got point shoes when I was 10 and now I am 11 and I want to start again and get more pointe shoes but I stopped when I was 9. Do you think I should get pointe shoes again
Hi so I started ballet when I was four/five then i stopped then i did it again when I was seven/eight, but I stopped again, now im 12 and thinking of going into dance again, not necessarily ballet but I dont know. Ballet would be my forte but, again maybe a could switch it up a little what do yall think

Aw same My Ballet teacher teach me this
i really liked this video, although im young, i still learned the basic five steps in less than an hour
It's interesting to note the parallels with martial arts in how these structures are set up. Obviously they were designed independently and for very different goals, but it shows that there are fundamental ways in which the human body can move with economy and avoid repetitive stress.
I apologise, I have close to zero knowledge of dance in general, let alone refined arts such as ballet, but I've always had a niggling question: How important is beauty/prettiness to a dancer's success?
Agreed!
Thackyou
If I've never done ballet before and I'm 24 than how fast could I go into pointe?
I am possibly the tallest ballet dancer and also would be possibly the oldest ballet dancer in the world. The success of my middle aged ballet profession was a rare exception and only two boys or the entire group would lift me up.. At aged 25 the fact that I never pursued my passion due to my height, poor skill etc made me audition and cry my heart out as I knew my dream was over. The Aust ballet panel said my height of 6'0 ft would be the primary reason why The Aust ballet decided to grant me a funded world study in medical/ scientific clinical trial ..a 3 yr intensive ballet training course to guarantee that I reach my highest potential and become the prefered dancer possessing the rare physical attributes, proving that only adults and taller women truely benefit from ballet and get the most out of ballet proving I can become just as good as any other dancer without the years of experience, without the initial strength, coordination, flexibility me thru medical/physical examination said that im an exception to the rules, standards and requirements for ballet.

I have to teach ballet tomorrow 😩
i wanna go back to ballet, but i'm all rusted! :C
I am 12 and i dance at insync dance of auburn. Everyone in company besides me does ballet. I dont really have any friends there. I am worried that it will be akward to start a begginers class and be the oldest but the worst. I want to start but nervous but at the same time worried that this is the time to start now then later. should I?
I’m 32 and always wanted to learn ballet. Unfortunately there aren’t any adult classes in my area so here I am learning on UA-cam lol
I started ballet when i was about 4yrs old and i am now 11yrs old😊 i also do contemporary and little bit of street dance🙂 i teached my sister whit this video and now she is happy🥰 she just turned 6years old! Wish her happy birthday🙂
